CHARMING HORSE FARM COUNTRY COTTAGE ON ROLLING HILLS

Suttons Bay Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Chateau / Country House, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5-6)

This guest house is at the center of our 21 acre Gentlemen's ranch. While there is not a water view unless you are on top one of our hills, the setting is an idyllic location with panoramic valley and hill views. This house has a warm natural all wood interior with beautiful artwork.

The grounds are professionally landscaped and maintained by the Landscape Architect owner.

There is a large open area that includes a wrap-around leather couch and a loft with two beds along with a separate bedroom with a queen-size bed with an exceptional quality pillow-top mattress. There is plenty of room to park any toys (campers, boats, trailers) right on the property. The owners have a 30 foot sailboat, a 26 foot motorboat and other water toys, so arrangements could be made for their use. If there is a need to stall your horses, or if you want to ride a horse or two, those arrangements can be made as well.

On the property is a large barn, a small barn (both for horses) along with indoor and outdoor riding arenas. Attached to the indoor riding arena is a viewing area with foosball, wifi, cable, leather couches, bathroom, laundry and additional sleeping area in another loft if it is needed.

At night, there is a firepit area to warm up on the cold Northern Michigan nights and we are far enough away from any city so that the panaromic star views are incredible.

We are only 1/2 mile away from the Suttons Bay to Traverse City trail and you could ride bikes/horses snowshoe/hike/cross-country ski in any direction from here and see wonderful water vistas and orchard/hill/valley views.

We are 30 minutes away from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the Homestead Resort that has skiing with hills that border on Lake Michigan.

Keywords: Northern Michigan, Suttons Bay, Horse Farm boarding (weekly/monthly) Indoor and Outdoor Riding Arenas, riding trials, Sailing/Power-boat excursions available

About Debbie Slocombe

Jeff and Debbie live on the property with their daughter Samara. Jeff is an attorney and Debbie is a Landscape Architect who designed the beautiful grounds and maintains them as well. They enjoy the life up North with the opportunity to raise, ride and show horses.

Debbie Slocombe purchased this chateau / country house in 2002

Why Debbie Slocombe chose Suttons Bay

Jeff and Debbie have been coming to the Traverse City/Suttons Bay all of their lives for vacations and decided to move to the area in 1999. They love the location of Suttons Bay because it has all the activities of Traverse City, yet the idyllic lifestyle of a Village just a short distance away.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our home is just a five minute walk to the beach or a one mile bike ride/hike to Suttons Bay. The TART trail (Rails to Trails Suttons Bay to Traverse City) makes it a 13 mile bike ride to Traverse City.

You can bring your own bikes or borrow our tandem to ride into the Village for a nice breakfast/lunch/dinner.

Because we are on 21 acres surrounded by much more open area, you will not be constricted to a small area.

Close to great boating, wonderful property owners

Most helpful and all-around lovely hosts! The property is beautiful and the pictures absolutely represent the property. The sunsets are out of this world. We ate at a few restaurants that the owners recommended and they were great! We boated, kids rode the horses (as arranged with Debbie separately) and we relaxed. The loft has a ladder that would be tricky for young children and could use some storage or shelves and the queen mattress was tired. This was our second stay here and will definitely come back!

Perfect place while in town for a wedding. My young son loved seeing the horses! The cottage is so cute and very clean, we did not want to leave! Very close to town and beaches. The owners are very friendly and we will definitely stay again!

Great location for a MI getaway

  • 5 of 5
Debbie and Jeff were wonderful hosts with a great cottage for rent. Very helpful with restaurant recommendations and other activities; we also boarded 2 horses with them during our stay, which worked out great. Lots of riding right from the property. Nite that the upstairs loft sleeping is accessible by a ladder only - but the couch in the main room works great for a second sleeping area. Highly recommend this property - very convenient to Sutton's Bay with lots of great shops and restaurants.

Charming Paradise!!! Happy "Three"-peat Customers!!!

This was our third year of staying with Jeff and Debbie, and it was as delightful as ever! Once you drive up their driveway off of the main road you enter an absolute wonderland of charm and beauty. First of all, the cottage is always immaculate and sparkling. You can tell the interior was decorated by someone who really has an eye for design, it's charming and creative. The main living area is open and inviting, with lovely furniture and a very comfortable leather couch. The kitchen area has all the basics; lovely dishes, microwave, fridge, always clean and spotless. The loft with two beds is absolutely adorable, it's a space I would have been crazy about as a kid! In the bedroom, you can wake up every morning to a view of one of the many bucolic pastures on the property, which is just priceless-a true up north experience. The linens and towels are plentiful and clean, and the sheets are so soft! Also, don't neglect the hammock out on the deck on the side of the cottage. Swinging out there as the sun goes down, watching the wind rustle the Maples and pines-it's just so relaxing. Speaking of trees, the landscaping on the whole property is just unbelievable. The farm is amazing, it's a wonderful treat after a long day of touring around the peninsula to be able to walk around and visit with the horses, who are all absolutely beautiful. Every last detail from the landscaping to the cleanliness of the barns to the cottage is just expert and professional, they definitely make it their business that you have a good time and experience the beauty of Leelanau. The property is landscaped in such a way that the cottage is very private and quiet, but Jeff and Debbie are always available should you need something. It's just a dream to stay there, I'm so glad we found it! We're coming up again at the end of the summer and of course next summer!

Very nice place for 2

  • 4 of 5
This cottage was immaculate in every way. Loved seeing the horses and the quiet of this location- except a little road noise. The bed was a queen with an old mattress where we sank to the middle at night. The loft we never got to because the ladder up was so steep (straight against the wall) that I'd be afraid of a big fall. Maybe if they moved the ladder out a bit, it would be ok. I'd never feel that the loft was safe for children or anyone who might need to get up in middle of night to use bathroom. Going up and down that ladder is dangerous for any age. I don't mean to be too negative, only honest. The husband did come over introduce himself one morning. We appreciated that. The kitchen was very nice and well supplied with utensils, etc. The couch and mission chair in living space are beautiful - just very hard to get out of if one has any back problems. The decorating is beautiful as is the surrounding garden - spectacular!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. Actually, the mattress is only three years old, we bought a pillow-top mattress and it is probably on the softer side. That is the same with the couch. We thought that softer might be better. As we replace items, that will be considered. We will, however, look into getting a different mattress. We acknowledge that the loft is definitely for the younger generations and one must climb a ladder to get into it. We have hired someone to build a door for the entrance and will ask him if he can build a better ladder as well. With space being limited, we can't put in a stair-case, but that is a good idea to modify the ladder somewhat. We are sorry if you experienced any road noise. Our guest cottage is about 1/8 mile from the road and besides being partially shielded by our house and our Amish-built barn, we have planted hundreds of trees and designed the driveway as a berm against the road as well. We also put air conditioners in both rooms if there was anything left over. We have ordered a 100 new trees to put as additions down by the road, so that should assist as well. So...keep an eye out, your suggestions will be implemented soon and hope to see you back.
