This year our home is only available for a minimum of one month to a maximum of 36 days beginning July 29 and ending September 2. The charge is $5500 for a month or $6000 for the full term. If these conditions fit with your needs read on. We are located in Northern Westchester County, 4 miles from the charming village of Katonah, noted for the Caramoor Music Festival and the regionally acclaimed Katonah Museum of Art. We are adjacent to a 300 acre bird and nature sanctuary with its hiking trails and there are many other preserves in the area for hiking, riding and exploration. The area is wooded and hilly with many unpaved roads roads to add to the rural charm, despite the relative proximity to New York City. We have two canoes that can be launched from our dock allowing you to fish or just drift serenely (motorboats are not permitted). The lake also possesses a sand beach for with lifeguard, float, clubhouse and playground for children. The lake is well stocked for fishing.
Downstairs is a living room, dining area, study/library and eat-in kitchen. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and another study that we can convert to another bedroom if needed. The master bedroom contains a queen size bed and half-bath, while the other two each have double beds. On the ground floor sliders lead out onto a screened porch where you can eat your meals while watching the lake wildlife come and go (herons, ducks, geese, osprey, cormorants, occasion swans and numerous other species of birds. From an upstairs bedroom sliders lead onto an open deck also overlooking the lake.
There is a finished basement used as a recreation room and to watch television (cable with many channels) and play DVDs on a large wall-mounted flat screen set. The upstairs bedroom also contains a set with cable reception.
The house is fully equipped (we live in it year round) with dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer. Northern Westchester County is an historic area with many charming nearby towns with old houses and churches. Katonah for example contains the preserved estate of John Jay, one of the founding fathers of the country and its first Chief Justice. Nearby Bedford Village and the town of Ridgefield just over the border in Connecticut were active in the War of Independence.
For those interested in local produce, there are weekly farmers' markets in the area. The nearest supermarket is 2 1/2 miles away and Katonah, 4 miles distant, also has a supermarket and other shops where groceries can be purchased.
The area abounds in interesting restaurants, a number of them on a level with some of the best in New York City. Northern Westchester County, besides being within an hour of Manhattan, is also an excellent gateway location for further exploration in New York State (the Catskill mountains and Adirondack area for example), and the historic towns and villages of New England.
We are two retired professionals who have lived in this house for 37 years. We raised two sons here and now have five grandchildren.
We had originally lived in Manhattan, but after our sons were born we began looking for a place where they could grow up close to nature, but where we were still close enough to New York City to take advantage of its outstanding resources.
A quiet, family oriented neighborhood with a house possessing outstanding views. Rural in feeling but with numerous sophisticated amenities in the area, and relative proximity to a great city.
Theater and both symphonic and popular music shows in the nearby town of Ridgefield in Connecticut. For music lovers, the Katonah Caramoor Music Center is open during the summer.
