About Ken

In 2004 I started a Newfoundland travel company called CapeRace Cultural Adventures. Because we are a boutique low volume operation we often have availability when the houses are not leased to CapeRace. We were honored to have National Geographic and the Lonely Planet stay at our properties.

Ken purchased this house in 2007

Why Ken chose St. Johns

Best of both worlds. I can start my day with a 45 minute hike up Signal Hill by stepping onto the Signal Hill trail outside my door, or I can walk to the city and take in some traditional Newfoundland music at a downtown pub--Experience the calm and quiet of the former fishing village or the fun and excitement of the upbeat city.

The Outer Battery is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the oldest city in North America. Hares Ears is the most easterly guest house in North America, with a local neighbourhood feel but just minutes away from the busltling city.

What makes this house unique

Immediate access to the Signal Hill Trail Trail which takes you to Cabot Tower at the top of Signal Hill National Park. Hares Ears has a unique quiet local neighbourhood look and feel with the vibrant city just minutes away.

All the charm of St. John's

All the charm of St. John's
  • 5 of 5
After having lived in St. John's for four years, I am now a regular visitor for work and vacation. Previously, we have also stayed in both hotels and short term apartment-style rentals in the downtown area. So, we know the city fairly well, and have a good sense of the types of accommodations options that are available.

On our recent trip, I was looking for a larger apartment/house for my young family of 5. We found Hare's Ears and stayed for most of the month of November. And we loved it!

Hare's Ears is a well appointed, and recently renovated home in St. John's historic Battery. It is clean with ample room for 2 adults, 3 children and a grandparent. The main part of the house is well setup for hosting, with a well-equipped and open concept kitchen, dining area, and living room. The two bedrooms are comfortable, and the bathroom is modern. There is also a fully equipped studio apartment/granny suite on the ground level.

The house has many windows that look directly towards the harbour and city, providing stunning views of St. John's ever-changing weather. The home is located conveniently close to hiking trails, with one trail head only steps from the front door, and Signal Hill towering overhead. The home is a bit further away from downtown than many hotels, but is similar distance compared to other short-terms apartment rentals. Downtown is still walkable in about 10-20 minutes, and there are lovely dining options near the base of Signal Hill including International Flavour (Pakistani), Gracie Joes (Bistro/cafe), and Mallard Cottage (one of the best new restaurants in Canada!). Despite this, a car is still a big help.

Our only complaints were that driving into this part of the Battery was difficult in winter weather, and that the keyless entry (via a keypad) did not work. Fortunately, the owners, Ken and Jane were accessible, and provided us with a key. They were also very helpful in assisting us with a few quirky requests.

We highly recommend staying at Hare's Ears in both the high or low seasons. It will give you as great flavour of the city, and you will quickly and easily feel at home.

Owner's Response: Nathaniel,

Thanks for the great review. Speaking of quirks- the keypad lock is now operational. New batteries did the trick. Who would have guessed? Note to persons visiting in the winter months, (Jan/Feb) the Battery neighbourhood is the first neighbourhood in the city to be plowed. (City policy) Surprisingly, St. John's has the third most temperate climate in Canada behind Victoria and Vancouver, and there is little snow until January. The distance from the house to the downtown Sheraton Hotel is 1.1 km (.68 mi) for those that want to walk. Ken

What a great place; amazing views of the harbour from the very unique Battery; immediate access to Signal hill Park for great hikes; walk to downtown with all the wonderful food and music selections; the house was spotless with great amenities, and served as a tremendous kick-off to a fantastic visit to Newfoundland- a truly charming and unique part of the world.

Loved the Location and the Neighbourhood

  • 5 of 5
For anyone looking for a true Newfoundland experience the Battery Neighbourhood is the place. The house is located less than a minute walk from Signal Hill park and has amazing views of the harbour and city. Super clean with great beds! Ground floor unit has an interesting design with separate entrance, kitchen and bathroom. Owner runs a popular tour company and is a great source of info for hidden gems in the city and for ideas on day trips. Probably the best attribute is the unique neighbourhood with an amazing cast of characters.

Charming and Scenic

  • 4 of 5
Loved the charming fishing house located at the foot of the Signal Hill trail overlooking the harbour and Atlantic ocean. Amazing natural light and the wall of windows was perfect for watching the ships head out to sea in the morning while sipping coffee. The outter battery is like nothing else and must be explored while in St. John's!

Owner's Response: Thanks Laura. Hopefully you'll be back when the snow goes away and you're not working! Don't forget that the house is part of CapeRace Adventures in the summer months. We'd be happy to put together a self-guided package that will immerse you in the outport coastal communities and give you a real taste of Newfoundland lifestyle.
