Dunsmuir House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, Great Kitchen, Patio Fire Pit

Call us for multiple night stay rates over 2 nights. For one night stays, close to the date, you can get a $50 discount and a reduced cleaning fee, if the cabin is left in great shape. You're going to love the Fish & Ski Haus!

Alpine Fish & Ski Haus in Dunsmuir is a charming four bedroom, two bath home right in town, and within easy walking distance to many superb restaurants, the brewery and shops. You can be fishing after a 5 minute stroll, or skiing Shasta less than a half hour from the haus.

Guests can take advantage of our Early Arrivals or Late Departure (when available), which is perfect for fishers, skiers, climbers and hikers. Read farther down for special rates for smaller parties, as well as 'Just Passing Through' rates for overnighters. Our great restaurants are on their summer schedules and the river is gorgeous. You can reach us at

Recent fishers reported very good fishing and LOVED the haus. 'We felt spoiled to be staying in such a cozy, comfortable and spacious place,' one reported, along with a fondness for the Keurig coffee maker as well as Dunsmuir Brewery Works!

You'll find our kitchen has all of the basics, plus a Keurig coffee system, juicer, Cuisinart and extensive bake ware. There is a fine china dining set as well as a casual set. Casual glassware and crystal. High-speed Wi-Fi and a docking station for music.

We don't have water filtration because we don't need it. Dunsmuir really does have the best water on earth. Every year, it receives no chemicals because it doesn't need them.

There is a mud room for outdoor footwear, skiing and fishing gear. The kitchen opens onto the delightful, private patio with nice outdoor furniture. It's edged by an attractive garden is a spectacularly comfortable place to hang out spring-fall. Afternoon sun is filtered through big oak trees. The patio has a Weber BBQ and a fire pit with some firewood. Kids love the glider and adults love the privacy.

Antiques such as the Victorian iron & brass bed and fine handcrafted furnishings are everywhere. Whimsical touches include trout lights around the top of the stunning four poster queen bed in the master bedroom. The beds have sumptuous sheets guests rave about (microfiber in summer & fleece in winter).

The living room looks out on the mountains and is filled with morning sun. It has a leather couch and loveseat; a nice futon that becomes a double bed and a library of excellent books. An oak electric fireplace with really pretty LED flames provides additional heat and wonderful ambience.

Downstairs one of the bedrooms has a faux Franklin woodstove with attractive flames and can be operated with or without the heater. Both beds can see the firebox since there are side panes on the stove.

There is a full laundry complete with detergent and dryer towels. One of the baths has an antique ball & claw foot tub, while the other has a modern tub and shower.

Although it can sleep 8+, we usually hold it to 6, unless we have rented to a party before and know they are very good about taking care of our place.

We offer several lodging options: Least expensive is the one night rental for 1-2 guests and only 1 bed. This is great for travelers passing through, and it still includes use of the laundry.

We own & run Trinity River Adventure Inn in Trinity County. We created Alpine Ski & Fish Haus as a vacation rental as well as our own ski getaway, so it is especially well-appointed and situated. Although located just 2 minutes from Interstate 5, our place avoids the constant hum of freeway traffic. This was a big deal to us, and it ruled out several places in our search.

You can be fishing after a 5 minute walk to the Upper Sacramento River, plus there are many more beloved fishing areas within minutes from Dunsmuir. Hedge Creek Falls at the north end of town is not to be missed.

We love the sound of the train going through town, but are also far enough from the tracks that it doesn't sound as though the train's running through the house.

Best of all, in this steep little mountain town, all of the great, close-by attractions are within an easy, mostly-level 10 minute walk. Read farther down to learn about them.

Dunsmuir has entranced us with its fabulous attractions so close to our place. All of these places are in walking distance from the haus:

~Dunsmuir Tire: a super asset for us and our guests. If you're having car trouble, they offer many services (they saved us when a thermostat went out on our vehicle!), plus they sell and service tires and install chains. The manager is Tony and he's a peach.

~Cafe' Maddalena is a tiny jewel of a restaurant, and it has exquisite food.

~Dogwood Diner may have the best homemade corned beef hash ever, and dog people can dine outside at sidewalk tables with their dogs.

~Cornerstone Bakery's baked goods, breakfasts and lunches are hearty and sumptuous.

~Sengthong's is very popular and features a wide variety of Thai and Vietnamese foods.

~Whistle Stop Restaurant has a great old counter as well as tables; a roaring wood stove you can cozy up to in winter; neat, large-format vintage photographs; and very good food.

~Dunsmuir Brewery Works has really fine brews and creative food. Their patio is super popular and good dogs are allowed.

New restaurants and shops just opened, so there is more to explore.

And because we cater to fishers at both of our locations, we are thrilled to have Ted Fay Fly Shop nearby. It is a legendary shop and has been in Dunsmuir for over 50 years.

Try Alpine Ski & Fish Haus once and you'll be hooked. You'll also receive a very nice discount for a future stay at our Trinity River cabins, adding to your exploration possibilities. Once you click on our web site link (located on the photos), you can see how much we have to offer.

'The place is wonderful for us; having a great time. Skiing is awesome. Love Dunsmuir and the [100% pure] water, the brew pub and your nicely stocked kitchen. We love to cook, and travel with our knives, pepper grinder, good salt, etc. Not needed here! Nice ipod docking station and comfy beds. The whole trip has been great. Enjoying your homey place so much, too. We have stayed in so many different places and you never know quite what to expect, but you guys have put so much into making the place comfortable, clean, organized, and sweet.

Sometimes go to Tahoe but much prefer the less crowded and peaceful vibe of places like this! Will definitely hope to return sometime. I had a great walk around town, everyone is so friendly. Having fantasies of moving up here. Maybe someday... sigh. Much thanks.' Becca Durkee/Oakland, CA

12/17/12: 'We very much enjoyed our stay at your house! It was cozy, warm and had everything that we needed. We spent the day snowboarding on Mt. Shasta and taking walks around Dunsmuir.

It was perfect for us and the kids. Plenty of space for everyone. We have no suggestions, but THANK YOU for this opportunity!!' Maura Traylor/Danville, CA

About Heidi & Steph

Steph Dutton is a world-renowned kayaker who paddled from Canada to Mexico, then paddled the Oregon coast again, in the winter. He also circumnavigated California's Channel Islands, often enduring thirty foot seas.

Heidi Tiura owned and operated several businesses before running away to sea and working on tugboats in Alaska, Washington and Oregon.

Steph and Heidi are both Coast Guard licensed masters (captains), and creators of Sanctuary Cruises on the Monterey Bay. They have been featured in numerous books and documentaries for their work with whales (including National Geographic's 'Whale Attack,' which was based on their Mother's Day 2004 whale watching cruise).

Now, they live on the upper Trinity River and their kayak adventures are of a tamer sort. When not rafting or kayaking with their dogs and guests, they can usually be found on their motorcycles, because Trinity County has some of the best roads in the world for riding bikes.

And if not riding their bikes, they're up at their Dunsmuir place, Alpine Fish & Ski Haus. For them, Dunsmuir is the Big City.

Heidi & Steph purchased this house in 2011

Why Heidi & Steph chose Dunsmuir

We love skiing Shasta and although the drive from Trinity County was doable in a day, it made for a very long day. Things snowballed from there.

What makes this house unique

Where we live on the Trinity River, we have a 10-20 minute drive to any stores or restaurants. We'd never live somewhere else, but love having the attractions of Dunsmuir just a few minutes' walk or bike ride away.

Excellent house, friendly owners

We stayed overnight at the Haus on our way back down from Crater Lake to the Bay Area. The Haus is located in a cute little town very close to Mount Shasta, just a couple blocks from restaurants and a charming downtown area.

Everything was perfectly laid out and shows the owners care a lot about their property and their guests. I loved the little basket of spare toiletries in the master bedroom, and the container of dog biscuits for tossing over the wall for the neighbor's dog.

Owner's Response: Probably the only complaint we have with Tessa's stay was it was too short! She hasn't had the chance to really explore Dunsmuir. hike to the different and stunning falls, or dine at the many superb restaurants yet. But she's our kind of guest (evident by appreciating dog treats for the neighbor dogs and liking our place so much), so we're really hoping she comes back.

Pleasant accomodations for travelors

Exceptionally clean, comfortable and spacious lodging. Very homey feel with lots of space upstairs and downstairs. Location provides a pleasant base for enjoying nearby locations for fishing, skiing, touring, hiking or photography. Owners' recommendations for local restaurants, activities and shops made stay very enjoyable. Proximity to scenic locations such as Castle Crag Sate Park, the Upper Sacramento River and Mount Shasta made for a relaxing stay.

Owner's Response: We love it when guests take advantage of all, or at least most, of what the area has to offer. Paul did!

He took a rather demanding hike to Mossbrae Falls from Hedge Creek Falls, instead of the easier route walking along the train track. He photographed the area, fished, explored other out of the way spots.

He also took our advise and dined at Cafe' Maddalena, which is exceptional, and a 10 minute stroll for Alpine Fish & Ski Haus' door. Good going!

Cell phones work throughout Dunsmuir/I-5 Corridor; best outside haus or at front of living room. Shops to delight everyone. Walking distance to truly exceptional restaurants and the brew pub. Close to Dunsmuir Tire which is great for putting on chains and repairs. Close enough to train depot you can walk to it, but far enough from tracks it won't sound as though the train is going through the haus. Just a couple of minutes off I-5, but you hear very little freeway noise, even from the patio
