An avid gardener for most of my life I began to become fascinated with the notion of a tropical garden. For a while I thought adding a wonderful greenhouse to my Connecticut home would satisfy that desire but when I had the chance to actually attempt a garden in the tropics I took it - I hope I have the chance to spend the rest of my life editing and sharing a tropical garden.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2002
I chose St. John because it is a Caribbean destination that is easy to get to and from for family and friends as well as myself and because it is American so while there are adjustments aplenty the language, the money, and the laws are familiar - mostly!
I love to go out in the evening and am so happy I don't have to give a thought to the drive home on this hilly complicated island because I am so close to town. My land is less hilly than most and so I can truly be indoors and out all day - most welcome is some time in the pool followed by a relaxing 15 minutes in the hot tub. My convenient location means I can pick up BBQ at Uncle Joe's or pizza at da Livio and bring it back to my pool deck where family and I dine while the local avian chorus serenades us.
This was a true find!! We loved the cottage. The pictures don't do it justice! It was nicely decorated and comfortable. It had it's own little balcony off the back and the outside shower was great to rinse off all of our sandy beach toys. The pool overlooked the water and had an amazing view a long with the hot tub. We used the hot tub every night and swam in the pool. It was completely ours! Super private and beautiful. Margaret was helpful, friendly and made our stay there perfect. She had umbrellas, beach chairs, etc. for us to use. This is a perfect place for a couple. ! The Island was amazing and so were ALL the beaches. We found a little beach that had fantastic snorkeling. It was a little bay area. Not overly crowded and we snorkeled for hours. We saw huge rays and all sorts of different types of fish. Ask Margaret for her book about all the beaches. It will be helpful. We are ready to return to St. John and would stay there again!
My husband and I stayed here a year ago for our babymoon. It took me a while to get around to writing this review--new motherhood and whatnot--but it's better late than never:) This really is an unforgettable place. The cottage and the grounds are more beautiful than the pictures you see here. We had a very comfortable stay and felt completely at home with all the thoughtful touches from Margaret, who was very informative and responsive when I made inquiries. We particularly enjoyed having breakfast by the pool and watching the sunset on the patio. The patio is also a great place for bird watching. It was such an inviting place that some afternoons we simply opted to stay in rather than going out to the beach. We hope visit St. John again and the cottage will be our top choice to stay.
I agree with the sentiment of others that the photos do not do this place justice! The cottage is in a beautiful hilltop spot with stunning views. It is also extremely comfortable and well appointed. We had everything we could need there, and Margaret (the owner) did a fantastic job of making us feel at home. The shower is exceptionally great and opens up to views of the ocean. We also really appreciated the beach chairs and snorkeling equipment available to use. I think the only 2 downsides would be no full kitchen (although has a mini fridge and you have access to a sink, microwave, and grill) and the bed was sufficient but not as comfortable as we are used to. For the price, it cannot be beat and we look forward to staying at SPC for many trips to come!
I'm 67 and traveled alone to return to St John, which I'd visited 30 years before when I found the island beautiful and unforgettable. This cottage made my third trip even more beautiful and unforgettable. The cottage is comfortable and luxurious and is reasonably priced. I took many pictures of the interior and exterior of this lovely cottage and each one looks like a picture from a magazine. This cottage is truly perfection with perfect furniture and decorator details. I totally agree with all the previous reviews. You definitely need a car/jeep to get to and from this place. I don't think the taxis will take you there, although they'd take you to the Weston down the road, but I wouldn't want to walk from there. I felt totally safe day and night at the cottage and Margaret is a wonderful hostess. She was extremely helpful with information before I arrived as well as while I was there.
Very nice place , pictures and description don't do enough for this rental, very romantic and private. Property owner is a wonderful person who really knows how to make you feel right at home and put a lot of thought in the design and property layout, you'll have a hard time leaving this place behind to go home, it will feel like your leaving home behind you
First of all, the stone post cottage, itself, is an adorable 1 bedroom cottage PERFECT for a couple - immaculately clean, with a beautiful updated bathroom and cute porch, with great view, to enjoy mornings and sunsets on (and a rainbow or 2 if you're lucky). A/C is available in the room (not necessary though if you enjoy sleeping with the cross winds cooling you off at night), a small fridge for some cocktail ingredients, coffee-maker, toaster and blender were also available in the room. A couple beach towels were provided and the bathroom towels were thick, fresh and great after taking a shower under the tile and stone lined shower! The cottage also has an equipment room a level below the living area, next to the outdoor shower (great to get the sand off as the sun's setting) which has some different size coolers, beach chairs and assorted snorkeling gear for your trips to Waterlemon and other great snorkeling spots! Outside of the cottage you will find a hot-tub perfect for star gazing in and a pool perfect for a quick lap or 2. The grounds of the SPC are filled with beautiful plants, bushes, flowers and trees that the hummingbirds and butterflies love to hang out in (bring your zoom lens!) The location of the cottage is ideal - walking distance to the Westin (just 1 little hill to get up) and a very quick drive to/from Cruz Bay. If you're beach hopping, don't worry, it's a quick drive to all the north side beaches after you've driven through town. Margaret, the care-taker, is an incredibly accommodating, helpful, and just overall great person that knows the island well! She had greeted us at the car barge port and led us directly to the cottage (no need for directions!). A bottle of wine, cheese and assorted fruit was waiting for us as we arrived inside :) As far the the island of St. John - it is picture-perfect and the ONLY negative I can think of the entire trip is that the food on the island (both in restaurants and in grocery stores) is VERY pricey... but hey, it's vacation! In summary, my wife and I can't wait to return to St. John and the cottage! Stay young!
