LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS

Pomfret House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms (3 beds) 1 Bath, (Sleeps Maximum of 4)

The Little House at Jericho is an early American farmhouse located on the Abington side of Pomfret, Connecticut, in a secluded storybook location on 145 acres of preserved land adjacent to the Airline Trail, the Wolf Den State Forest, Mashomoquet State Park and the New England Forestry Foundation's Chase Kimball Memorial Forest. The site is ideal for bird-watching from the deck over-looking the pond or at the Audubon Society's Grasslands preserved sanctuary nearby, for long walks in the woods, cross-country skiing, fishing, or just for a place to get away from it all. Use of the tennis court is allowed, but hunting is strictly prohibited, as is use of any off-road vehicles. It is ideal for an artist or author's retreat.

The Little House has been lovingly preserved by eight generations of the same family who have lived at Jericho since 1814. This antique house has one large downstairs and two small upstairs bedrooms, a spacious living/dining room with a huge granite fireplace, and can sleep up to four people comfortably. Furnished with period country antiques, guests feel transported into the 18th century, until they slide back a door to find a modern kitchen with a view over an orchard and pond from a large deck, and a newly updated bathroom.

Jericho is situated close to Hyde, Pomfret and Rectory Schools, as well as the numerous scenic drives, destination restaurants, antique stores and boutiques in Windham County. This historic little house is nestled in the forest, far from the stress of daily life, but only a short drive from Old Sturbridge Village and Mystic Seaport. It is also less than an hour's drive from Hartford, Providence and Worcester and only a 20 minute drive from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Boston is 90 miles Northeast and New York City 150 miles Southwest.

About The Owner

After a career as an international civil servant, I retired in 2011 to the farmhouse where I spent summers as a child and with my own children and have restored the guesthouse behind my house. The 'Little House' is an 18th century farmhouse where my great-grandfather was born in 1823 and it has been occupied by the same family for seven generations. The bathroom is entirely new, as is the expansive deck on the back, but the rest is the original house, wide pine floorboards that originally came from a Congregational church nearby (when my parents did the first restoration in 1952) a huge fireplace, exposed beams and a warm cozy atmosphere.

The Owner purchased this house in 1814

Why The Owner chose Pomfret

The Quiet Corner of Connecticut is a delightful area, unspoiled and rural, but only a short drive to Boston, Providence, Hartford and Worcester. Pomfret is a particularly pretty town with a great deal of preserved woodland in a region with a wealth of historical significance. For anyone interested in American history, wildlife and bird-watching, this area has great appeal and is central for day trips to all of Southern New England's attractions

What makes this house unique

I love the solitude in this secluded location. The deer feel safe here, and people tend to want to return to this peaceful sanctuary, where wildlife abound. Like most of New England, the weather and the seasons are always changing and bringing new surprises. What I like to do most is walk in the woods, or just sit and read in the serenity of Jericho

Short stay at Little House in the Big Woods!

  • 5 of 5
Stayed here for 2 nights to attend family reunion nearby. This is a great little hideaway in the woods. Restored 200 year old house is quaint and cozy. We loved the historic feeling and solitude of the property. The drive down the lane to get here is breathtaking and beautiful. Would be nice to come back and explore the woods and pond as we did not have time. This is a great property to get away from the city noise and bury yourself in a good book! Owner Eliza very easy to reach and helpful with suggestions for dining etc in immediate area. Bathroom stocked with lovely toiletries and kitchen stocked nicely as well (although very small). Winery down the road a bit fun to visit. Would love to return when we have more time!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay at the Little House. It was nice to have you and I hope you return. Thank you for leaving everything sparkling! You were great guests.
With regard to the kitchen, it is functional and consistent in size with the house: Little. But I have seen much smaller in NYC apartments!
Thank you for your kind and accurate review.

My daughter and I who drove down from our home in Maine to attend a wedding loved this place. Very 18th century homey with what you would expect updated done above and beyond. We had a great time exploring the pond, the barn and a path which goes on forever and just sitting on the deck listening to birds. Lovely owner and very friendly little dog. All very comfy and relaxing. We'd go back a second.

Historic Gem with Comfortable Beds

  • 5 of 5
What a charming little house! It is 200 years old with many original furnishings, really an historic gem set on 144 acres of beautiful nature with a creek running through. The property has been in the family for 200 years and the Little House has been treated with great sensitivity regarding original historic details. We thought we had stepped back in time.

The cottage was very clean and well supplied with luxury spa products and an abundance of gourmet items in the kitchen. It felt very welcoming. The beds were excellent. Not only did we have a wedding in the area, we also had a small family reunion at the Little House. It was perfect and we will all remember what a good time we had. This is a very special place.

Charming house with lots of character and genuine New England feel

  • 4 of 5
My friends and I stayed at this house a few days before my wedding and loved the New England charm of the house and its natural setting. The property is very well kept and your stay will feel more like a bed and breakfast with a steadfast inn keeper checking in on you. The unique part of this property is that the owner also lives on the large, pond-side lot. In fact, her door is but a few feet aways from yours. If you are in need, she is right there to service you.

The house is definitely a great find!

Owner's Response: This review sounds as if I was hovering all the time and that the houses are too close, when in fact the houses are completely separate and I was away for most of the weekend, only there to let the guests in on Thursday evening, explain how things work, and make sure that they had everything they needed. I returned late on Sunday morning, after the bridal party's departure, though some of them returned later to pick up some wedding supplies/beverages that had been left behind. I was a bit disappointed that the bride had not told me in advance that she was coming for her own wedding, that she would be bringing five people (more than the house accommodates comfortably), moving furniture, assembling goody-bags for the large wedding, needing to borrow an air mattress (and additional linens), that everyone would need to be supplied with new toothbrushes, and that she and her fiance would be bringing a large Penske moving van/truck to drive over the lawn, etc. I wondered if they were going to leave with the entire contents of the house in the van! It would have been much better to have discussed the bride's special needs in advance. It also would have been nice if the guests had made an attempt to put things back as they had found them. However, I do not believe that there was any serious damage and I was thrilled to learn, on her arrival, that the bride had chosen to stay at the Little House for the weekend of her wedding at Tyrone Farm. I am glad that the wedding party enjoyed themselves and wish the young couple a lifetime of happiness.

Great weekend house

  • 5 of 5
We were in town for a wedding and opted to rent Little House rather than stay in a hotel. We are so happy we made this decision. The owner was very helpful and gracious. The Little House was clean and comfortable, with loads of bath products for our convenience. There is a wonderful pond in the back with lily pads and frogs. So serene. The house is also filled with original historic details from the 1800's, which were also fun. The property is very peaceful and secluded, so do not forget to bring a car.
