We live in California, but I grew up in Michigan. Every year we escape with our family to our wonderful secret place, Burt Lake.
Barbara Engel purchased this cottage in 2011
My parents lived near Burt Lake for 40 years and it is my perfect place for relaxation. We hope to live here part time in a few years.
For runners the 5 mile Indian Trail Road loop is a great route.
My idea of a cottage is an old, musky and well-worn place, where you have to listen to a squeaky old screen door that doesn't quite close. Where mosquitos follow you indoors and outdoors. This is anything but a cottage. It is a private get-away. A retreat. A place where you can watch the sunrise, skip stones and have a private campfire.
We used this as our base, which is only 20 minutes from the "Mighty Mac." While there we visited the Soo Locks, Tahquamenon Falls, Sleepy Bear Dunes, Mackinaw City, and Mackinac Island. The only reason we would not recommend this place is because we want to go next year and don't want the competition.
I honestly cannot believe there were any negative reviews of this property. Every room in this cottage has been re-done and it far exceeded our expectations. The great room/kitchen area is wonderful, with beautiful windows overlooking the picture-perfect lake. The lake is beautiful, albeit choppy on a windy day, and the water is clear. While there isn't a beach on the property, the water is very shallow off the end of the dock, which made it a perfect swimming spot for my 6 year old. (The Burt Lake State Park also offers a great sandy beach and is only a 20 min boat ride away.) We enjoyed boating every day on Burt Lake and the Indian River, as well as biking on the tree lined street running along the lake. The property was VERY clean and well-maintained and we had everything we needed to make our stay fun and enjoyable! Watch out for the friendly resident chipmunk, though, he made off and up a tree with 3/4ths of a chocolate bar we were hoping to use for s'mores...the little bugger! :)
We were very blessed to spend a few days at the Burt Lake Cottage. The description on the website is accurate - everything we needed was provided! The cottage was clean and well-furnished.
We had never rented a cottage, sight unseen, before. The photographs showed what the rooms look like but don't capture the warmth and comfort we found there.
We look forward to another stay at the cottage to create even more family memories!
We had a great time! The weather was awesome, Burt Lake was gorgeous and the location of the home was quiet and totally enjoyable. However, we were sightly disappointed with the condition of the home. Aside from the newly renovated bathroom and the sunroom which were very nice, the rest of the house needs major updates and TLC. The rental indicated it had AC, it did not. The electrical is way outdated, so much that the bedroom with bunkbeds had a ceiling fixture that the switch on the wall did not work and it appeared someone had just unscrewed the light bulbs until they shut off - VERY dangerous. All of the furniture, lamps, etc were old and falling apart. Although the surface was clean, the house was NOT cleaned inside or outside ... there were cobwebs in every corner, dead insects along all of the base boards and the outside of the house needed a hose MAJOR! The landscaping was over grown and not tended to at all. The kitchen was stocked, but the cupboards were old, drawers were broken, the pantry closet wouldn't close, I think due to the water heater and really overall the house needs a lot of attention. If it wasn't for great weather, awesome location and the large nice sunroom, we would've been very disappointed - the last 3 days were very warm and without air it was tough - I have multiple sclerosis and I only picked houses with AC ... this house stated that it had AC! I don't want to sound like were are picking on the house, but if I was the owner and wasn't local to keep a finger on the pulse, I would want to know what my renters thought! I was impressed with the lawn care svc ... they went over the front twice and blew off the grass clippings so that they were not tracked into the house! There were a lot of hummingbirds, the swimming was awesome & the patio had great views! Thank you for letting us stay at your home & I hope my comments are taken with lots of passion -- the house has a ton of potential & I hope you keep working on making it better & better! One other thing, the house stated no dogs but your cleaners had one and we would've love to bring our dog Oreo :-(
My husband and I and our three small children had a wonderful time at this Burt Lake cottage. It was clean and the updated bathroom was very nice. I personally loved the "getting away from it all" feel that the cottage provided- but LOVED the fact that it has a washer/dryer and dishwasher! :-)
The location of cottage was perfect for day trips to local favorites. We went to Harbor Springs, Petosky, Charlevoix, and Wilderness State Park. Fun, fun, fun!
We had a perfect vacation here! The views of Burt Lake are spectacular, the patio was a perfect place to sit and enjoy the sights and sounds, with fires in the evening. The house was clean, beds were comfortable, and it had all the amenities. What a wonderful, peaceful, and beautiful place to get away from home and relax. It was a great location on a private drive, and we were within 30 miles from area attractions; Mackinaw, Petoskey, Boyne, Cheboygan. I recommend this cottage looking to get away!!!
