I started coming to St. John in 1965 with a college friend who is from here. I bought this acre in 1976 from her stepfather and walked the land with him and the aid of a machete. Finally in 2009 I built this home here, where I hope to spend as much time as possible away from Michigan winters. I hope to grow an organic, sustainable garden, available to renters, which will provide fruit and vegetable for me and any guests. I love the beauty and tranquility of the mountain, and the calm joy of watching the butterflies from the porch.

A WONDERFUL PLACE FOR PEACE AND RELAXATION

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay a Villa Bordeaux. It offered a wonderful view of St. John along with the privacy to do as you please. You can walk right out of the open-air shower onto the porch, if you please. The house is situated in a wooded clearing where you can easily see the Caribbean Sea and the beautiful wooded mountains. The house is comfortable and airy with screened windows and a large shaded porch where you can lounge with a book and a cold drink. It combined both seclusion and modern conveniences. Occasionally, you can catch a glimpse of deer and peacocks in the yard along with abundant birds. Wi-Fi is available if we could not bear to be out of touch. The house is located not far from the beautiful beaches of the national park, as well as near restaurants and local night life. It takes a short time to get used to the winding roads, but with a four-wheel drive jeep, the roads are not a problem. The caretaker was helpful in getting us situated. We want to go back as soon as we can.

WONDERFULL VACATION

  • 5 of 5
I am writing this letter because after reading, for lack of a better word a strange review, that as it turns out to be totally wrong about Villa Bordeaux. I am compelled to write about my experience at what I call the home on the mountaintop.
Villa Bordeaux is the most relaxing place I have stayed in the last 27 years that I have been visiting St John. Although, the house is well off the beaten track and you need a 4-Wheel drive and a little skill at driving the mountainous roads of St John on the left hand side, it is well worth it.
It is so peaceful, you never even hear a human voice unless it is one of your own party. It was so nice to come back after a wonderful day at the beach and enjoy the outdoor shower with all hot water you need. We prepared many great dinners and loved to watch the colors of sunset turn into the night with the symphony of song of the forest (owls, peacocks, frogs and crickets). The deck was our favorite, with a beautiful view and a great place to read, play cards, dine or just relax. We slept like babies in the master bedroom with a very comfortable bed and the softest duvee in the world with the night sounds lulling us away.
One of the things that we liked best about the place was that it is close to the Coral bay side of St John, which I now know has some of the best beaches on island that are away from the crowds during high season (thanks to the info from the manager).
The house had everything I was looking for, a view of the forest and ocean, extremely quiet and comfortable, well stocked and a very nice layout. We were looking to relax away from the trials of the city and found it here. We are planning to be repeat guests and look forward to our next visit.
Sincerely, Wendy B

UNIQUE AND PRIVATE...AND DISGUSTING!

  • 1 of 5
I posted a review that sounds much like the one posted by Jerzy O, who rented the house on 1/2/14. In fact we were the people who were in the house right before them. The manager had a day and a half to clean, since we left early morning on 1/31/14 and I would assume that is adequate time to prepare for the next tenant. I can testify that all the items listed below were true.
1) The dirt and cobwebs were there when we arrived and apparently remained when we left.
2) Despite sunny days we too had no hot water. We had so many other problems including no water at all (for 1 day or operating toilet for 2 days), that we did not mention to the manager that we had no hot water. Note no running water or operating toilet...we were told there were no plungers or plumber available when we tried to get the manager or owner to get the problem fixed.
3)Mouse infestation. We were told they were out of traps on the island. You couldn't hear them downstairs but from upstairs there was a party in the walls. We stored all food and dishes in the fridge because the mice ate everything that wasn't stored in a can. The mouse droppings were gross and were abundant in the kitchen and living room.

We too tried to leave but with it being Christmas week there was no where to go for a family of four. The condition of the house and long driveway reflect a lack of upkeep and care. We repeatedly heard that things are different on the island...does that mean no upkeep or care to a property? Excuses were ample such as no plunger, no mouse traps, no sun for heated water. no time to clean etc. The condition should be disclosed and reflected in the price. I feel for Jerzy O. We did stay in the house. It ruined our week, living in squalor. The house could be great if maintained. There was no view because of total overgrowth around the house. There is no grill as indicated since it was totally rusted out, with no propane tank. The beach/ garden chairs were total rust as were many items on the property. The Teflon cooking pans had the finish scratched out...chipping into the food. I could find better things at the dump. The condition of everything in the kitchen was substandard. I too have traveled extensively and never written a poor review.
The owner did not respond to calls asking for recompense, but eventually did, offering one night in response to the two we asked for (the nights of no working toilet). I changed the review to reflect 1 night reimbursement.

HORRIBLE - STAY AWAY!!!

  • 1 of 5
Unfortunately I cannot give it less than one star, but wish this was an option!!! We have arrived on January 2, 2014 for a week-long vacation that became a nightmare! Perhaps it would be useful just to list problems:
1. The place was filthy and neglected as if it has not been cleaned for a very long time and neglected. There was dust, cobwebs, gecko and mouse droppings everywhere and even a dead cockroach. The explanation given by the manager was that there was insufficient time between two rentals (?)
2. No hot water. Period. Manager’s explanation was that this is “solar” water heating and when it’s cloudy it does not work well.
3. No toilet paper, no paper towels, no soap. After 12hours of travel upon arrival to our vacation home we couldn’t even wash our hands. We have rented many houses before and have never experienced anything similar!
4. Mouse infestation. It was impossible to sleep at night because mice were running in the walls and the ceiling of the house and nibbled on our food in the kitchen. We were told to feed a stray cat that tried to open the door during the night and get inside the house to avoid problems with mice. It seemed to us that the cat actually lived in the house judging by scratch marks on the furniture - a big concern for us since some members of our family are allergic to cats.
5. Finally, no words can describe the overwhelming smell that was coming from somewhere around the stove in the kitchen - likely a dead mouse or a gecko.
6. We found somebody else’s clothing in the dresser – not at all clean, our towels and sheets didn’t look fresh either, they smelled of mold, maybe were not even laundered? No signal in TV.

After spending a sleepless night at the house we have decided to look for alternatives and luckily found a hotel on St. Thomas. While trying to leave we have faced another problem – the road leading to the house was very muddy and challenging even for our 4WD vehicle. We got stuck in the mud at the bottom of the steep ramp and had to use a shovel to dig ourselves out. It took additional two hours and was another unwelcome “adventure” during our vacation. Clearly the road needs attention from the owner/manager to make it safe and accessible.
On the same day (January 3) we have notified home manager about our decision to leave and asked for a refund of remaining amount to which he agreed. As of today, we still have not received our refund despite phone calls and emails. This is truly unacceptable – stay away f

SECLUDED MOUNTAIN PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
I visited the Virgin Islands this past summer for the first time, and was lucky enough to stay at the one and only Villa Bordeaux on St. John. Not only did I discover that St. John the best preserved, most stunning island among the Virgins (most of the island is a national park), Villa Bordeaux was a rare secluded getaway at the tiptop of Bordeaux Mountain.

The house is simple yet gorgeous with an incredible wrap-around porch for perching to watch the birds, butterflies and tropical jungle. You can open the doors to the screened in living room and feel like you're in the middle of the tropics, leisurely eating your breakfast. The house is well equipped - kitchen, internet(!!), fancy outdoor gas grill, DVD player, a luxury outdoor shower which I LOVED, AND a washer/dryer. I stayed in the loft, and didn't mind the ladder (it had big safety railings). It was fun and cozy - guaranteed to please treehouse-type kids.

I would absolutely recommend this picture perfect villa - especially to artists seeking retreat and inspiration, couples, families with children, or even small groups of friends looking for somewhere special to celebrate (as I was). I loved having the independence to be able to cook, ability to come and go and explore as we pleased (not depending on the restricted routes of hotel jeeps), and the true peace, quiet, and beauty atop the mountain - away even from other tourists. We were able to visit every major beach along the northern shore (My favorite was Trunk Bay, but each one is more spectacular than the next).

I was at the house during hurricane season, and was happy to find out it was perhaps the most protected spot on the island. If you're coming in August, don't forget your bug spray (the mosquitos were the only drawback - but they only come out part of the year). I would echo the other reviewer - the roads are not for the faint at heart. You have to rent a jeep to drive these mountains, but it's so, so worth it. This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

PERFECT FOR A COUPLE

  • 5 of 5
If you do not mind driving steep (but perfectly manageable with a Jeep) roads this is a great retreat for a couple. House is completely private and very comfortable. You do not here any "human" noise, only sounds of the forest and occasionally rooster might visit you. There is also an adorable cat Snowflake that visits regularly and would appreciate if you feed her. The best thing about the house is covered porch. Even on the hottest day it is refreshingly cool. If you are on St. John to visit different beaches the location is very convenient - you are within 15-20 minutes to North shore beaches as well as Salt Pond and East End. House manager Jill will help you to rent a car, give you all the information you need, and greet you on arrival. There is no land phone line in the house, bring your computer/smart phone with Skype - internet connection is very good. If your party is more then two I would not recommend using the sleeping loft - ladder is quite steep, but there is a sleeper in the living room to use instead.
