Overview

Mi-Wuk Village Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

Leave behind crowds and commotion of your everyday life and enjoy all that Sierras have to offer from our spacious cabin in the woods.

Wake up to the chirping of birds, pecking of woodpeckers, or the sight of snowflakes floating gently past your bedroom window. Step outside and take a full breath of air smelling of pine and cedar. Listen to the sounds of the forest. Take a brisk walk up the driveway to a clearing from which unfolds a beautiful view of forest and mountains to the west (great spot to watch sunsets, too.)

What will it be today? A day trip to Yosemite? A drive up to the High Sierras? Swimming or kayaking on Lake Pinecrest? Skiing or snowboarding at Dodgeridge, or sledding at Little Sweden? Or maybe you will leave your car behind and hike or ride your bike on the nearby trails?

The possibilities are endless. Quaint Twain Harte with its stores, restaurants, golf course, miniature golf and a nice playground for kids is only 3 miles away. Sonora (malls, restaurants, movie theater, antique shops) is about 10 miles due west. Nearby Sonora is Columbia State Historic Park where you can step back in time to the Gold Rush era and ride a stage coach, pan for gold, or enjoy ice-cold sarsaparilla at the saloon. A bit further away are Big Trees State Park, Moaning Caverns, and Angel's Camp. And don't forget exploring the high country further up highway 108, beyond the town of Strawberry. There you will find the Dardanelles, Kennedy Meadows Resort and Pack Station, and the Sonora Pass. Whether you stay a weekend or a week, you will not run out of things to do.

What makes our cabin truly unique are the 13 acres of pine, fir, and cedar forest on which it is situated, surrounded by acres and acres of state and private forest, which is crisscrossed by logging roads which double as hiking/biking/horseback riding/cross-country skiing trails. There are trails running to commercial areas of Sugar Pine (check out Kelly's Kitchen) and Mi-Wuk (both about 15 minutes walk) as well as to Lyon's Dam, and, from what I hear, all the way to Strawberry. In the winter, a 1/5 mile driveway doubles as a private sled run, not too steep for little kids, yet long enough for grown-ups

Inside the cabin, you will find two bedroom wings, each with 2 bedrooms, making it easy for 2 or 3 families to enjoy staying there at one time. One wing has a master bedroom with a comfortable king-size bed and an adjoining bathroom. A small bedroom with 2 twin beds adjoins the master bedroom. This setup is great for a family with younger kids. The other wing has two bedrooms (each with two twin beds), a full bathroom with shower and tub, and a sitting area with 6-foot tall windows which allow you to enjoy the sight of outdoors while staying in.

The huge living/dining room sports high wood ceiling, a wood-burning fireplace (in front of which we spent many an evening after a day of skiing or sledding) and a TV with a VCR and a DVD player.

Next to the fully appointed kitchen, there is a laundry room with a washer and a dryer and a breakfast nook which will accommodate 6-8 people.

Downstairs, there is a large family room with a game table (air hockey, pool, and ping-pong) and a TV with a VCR as well as bunk beds and 2 futons. A gas fireplace tucked in the corner will keep you nice and cozy. Adjoining the family room is a full bathroom with shower.

It's a great cabin in a great location. Come and enjoy it, and bring a friend or two.

About Andre Kruglikov

I am a software developer, and after days (and sometimes nights) spent in front of a computer, I always look forward to the space and the solitude I find at our cabin.

I love taking long hikes or bike rides through the forest, exploring different trails.

In the summer, Lake Pinecrest is great for swimming or kayaking and a 5-mile hike around the lake is reasonably strenuous with plenty of spots to stop, take a swim in the lake and enjoy the scenery.

In the winter, we head up to Dodgeridge for skiing or snowshoeing or to Little Sweden for sledding (there is no lift, and you get plenty of exercise hiking up the hill, but the ride down is well worth it.)

Andre Kruglikov purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Andre Kruglikov chose Mi-Wuk Village

My better half was almost born in Long Barn, and their family has been vacationing in that area almost every year. When we happened on this cabin, we loved the space, the solitude and the proximity to Lake Pinecrest and to Dodgeridge.

What makes this cabin unique

This is a great place to unwind and relax, with plenty of space, both indoors and outdoors for a large group of people.

Absolutely perfect!!!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was perfect for our family! Our kids were excited about the pictures, but we agreed when we arrived that it was even better! The entire house feels open and roomy. 12 people could stay here in perfect comfort. The master bedroom is huge, the rec room is a good size, and the kitchen is more than adequate. There are 2 separate eating areas and plenty of chairs. There are 4 bathrooms so you never have to wait!

It was difficult to find because I didn't read Andre's directions well enough. It is very secluded and you are as close to nature as one can get and still enjoy warmth and modern luxuries. But it is still within walking distance of a quaint little mountain village. The cabin was clean and neat, but felt homey so I wasn't worried about my kids breaking something. We had an amazing vacation here: long rambling walks in the woods, a day trip to the snow, pizza dinner in Twain Harte, game and movie nights, cooking and baking projects, and lots of rest and relaxation while the kids played pool, ping pong, and air hockey in the rec room. It was cold outside, but very warm and cozy inside once we got the hang of programming the central heat. The cabin had games, books, all the pots, pans and utensils we needed, a dishwasher and a washer and dryer.

There are also pleasant surprises not mentioned on the website, such as a Jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom and gorgeous skylights in the entry and master bathroom. There is a swing set outside perfect for younger kids.

It is important to remember that you are in the middle of the forest! We saw spiders and there were glue traps around the house to deter rodent visitors. The water was occasionally discolored, the reason for which was fully explained in the paperwork. We chose to "pack it in, pack it out" for our trash, which wasn't a problem for us but could be if you weren't prepared for that option. We also chose to use most of our own linens, but did find the washer and dryer more than adequate. If you dry a large load, it will take awhile, but to me that is just common sense!

I was a little nervous about the deposit, not knowing how picky the owner and cleaners might be. We cleaned up after ourselves and put things back where we found them, and our deposit was fully refunded. We will definitely return in the spring or summer, and my teenage daughter wants to come for her birthday. I would also highly recommend it to friends, and to anyone who wants to have an amazing vacation!

Don't be mislead by the low rates " Cheap Doesn't Have To Mean Cheap!"

If you like to see a dead rat in the toilet, a flying bat in the house and not enough water pressure in the shower, this might be a place for you.

If you intend to rent this place you will be asked to pay a cleaning fee , a garbage fee and to wash and dry ,under time pressure, the sheets ( which is almost impossible with the old dryer in the cabin). You also will be scold about how unskillful you are when washing and folding " flannel sheets" and that if they are not completely dry they " would start moldering, and the whole place would stink to high heaven." On the day you have to leave the cabin you better wake up at least at 3 am so you can have enough time to complete the expected chores ( cleaning , washing , garbage etc.) as per your leasing contract ( read it very careful , as the owner will use each word of it to argue about the conditions he put on it) .

Overall, not a kids friendly place. The temperature in the rooms was difficult to control and the furniture were rather old and unsafe. The hygiene and cleanliness of the cabin were disapointing so you better bring disinfecting wipes bleach and a vacum cleaner if you have small children.

Furthermore, you will likely not receive your full deposit back. You will get several argumantative essays in your e-mail about the cost of the services following your visit and damages you must pay . Finally, if you get lucky, you might get a lesson in physics but to only conclude that the next time you intent to rent a "cheap" cabin you better be ready to pay for this " luxury".

Owner's Response: Ah, what a difference $125 makes. The letter Desislava sent me upon coming home from our cabin started with "Hi, This is Desislava writing. We just came back from the cabin. We enjoyed our Thanksgiving weekend there very much. We washed and dried all linens and towels and put the garbage inside the green bins, as per the rental agreement. Unfortunately we had a minor incident with one of our kids." Not a mention of rat in the toilet, a flying bat, or any other horrors with which she is trying to repay me for insisting that she pay for the damage her party has inflicted on the innocent downstairs bunk bed. When she informed me that her child fell while climbing down the ladder from the top bunk and got a bloody nose, I felt awful. But then I received pictures taken by the cleaning crew (frame of the top bank was splintered on the side away from the ladder, and a vertical member of the bed rail split on that same side) and spoke to 2 people, one of them a contractor, all of whom volunteered that they could not see how the damage to the bunk bed could be consistent with the story proffered by Desislava. To all of us, it looked like someone of considerable weight tried to climb down the wrong side of the bunk bed. Either that, or someone pushed really hard against the rail. Really hard. I voiced these concerns to Desislava, and she accused me of saying that her child was overweight. I wasn't. My own 2 boys weigh almost as much as I do, but they are also a couple of inches taller than I am and are hardly overweight. The top bunk cannot be made as strong as it was before because the frame split at one of the bolts that keeps the frame together. I could have asked he to pay for replacing the bunk bed, which could run between $300 and $500. Instead, I chose to have the bunk bed unstacked and the damage to the former top bunk repaired, which cost only $125, which I thought reasonable to ask Desislava to cover. Obviously she felt that I should pay for it, along the cost of removing garbage (Rental Agreement clearly states that a guest can either remove their garbage or pay to have someone else to remove it.) As for sheets, they are flannel and take a while to dry. She folded them partially dry. I did not "scold" her but simply pointed out that if she could not dry them, it would be better not to fold them. You can take her word for it, or trust reviews left by the other 17 people.

Quiet, private, relaxing place "in the woods"

  • 4 of 5

No, we think the listing photos were not very accurate. Although rustic, this cabin was more spacious than the pictures depict! We enjoyed our short stay there with family and friends. Plenty of room for our large group. After a long and hot day rafting at nearby Stanislaus River, we welcomed coming back to the cabin to unwind and enjoy the peace and fresh air. The cabin was situated at the end of a (steep) long private driveway, making it seem like we were alone in the middle of the forest, but we were actually within walking distance from CA-108! Most of us actually found the best place to be at was outside on the large balcony, enjoying the fresh air, surrounded by tall pine trees. Though we didn't get to hike in the area around the cabin, there seemed to be some nice trails. The owner was easy to communicate with, and we'd definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Sine the review itself did not include any negative comments, I asked the guest who left it how we could improve things to get 5 stars. His response was as follows: How are you? Sorry for late reply. Yeah, it should have been 5 of 5!… I have myself to blame for that ~~I let my wife answer survey instead of me doing it. The only concern she had was the ‘trash collection’ thing –we were willing to leave it in your property (never outside because of wild animals) but we don’t want to stink-up the beautiful cabin since we don’t know when you’ll come around or the cleaners will come around. So, we have to separate and bring it to the dumpsites in those 2 areas you told me before. Really minor inconvenience for dads but for moms I guess it’s a little bit of a hassle… END OF RESPONSE Regular trash collection is available in the area where our cabin is located, but it is targeted mainly at year-around residents as it requires that trash cans be brought to the highway (0.2 of a mile) on the day of pickup and then brought down afterwards. It would be hard for us to accomplish this since we do not live there. As we mention to all our guests, they can leave their trash in garbage cans under the deck and they will be taken care of, but the person who does it asks for around $30 to do it, which is only slightly more than what it would cost one to take the trash to the nearest transfer station.

Better than we expected.

We had a great time at this cabin. It was very spacious and quiet. We cooked our own meals and were very impressed that the cabin had all the utensils needed. Do bring all groceries needed from home, because the store there was pricey. I strongly suggest you take the one hour hike to the dam, it was breathtaking. The lake was 20 minutes away (driving) and was very low on water. Would definitely recommend to a friend and we are already making plans to go again.
