Wildloon is the featured log home at Loon's Echo Wilderness Retreat. In Wildloon, you will enjoy all the amenities of home while being surrounded by a mature pine forest. The hand-scribed log home, Wildloon, is placed on a rock outcropping that overlooks eight-mile lake with miles of undeveloped shoreline; miles of canoeing, hiking, biking, and snowshoeing trails right outside your door. Wildloon is part of a true wilderness retreat that only has 3 cabins available for rent. You will have your own private dock, and access to miles of wilderness. It is located in Northern Minnesota a few miles west of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It is like having a cabin on your campsite in the wilderness. Read a book, work a puzzle, watch TV, or listen to your favorite CD while sitting in front of one of the two classic stone fireplaces. Perfect for a get-away weekend, family vacation, or a girls get-together.

Wildloon Log Home: The featured log home is Wildloon, a 2 bedroom luxury log home. Originally Wildloon was a 1920's hand-hewn log lodge, built in the Boundary waters. In 1993, it was strategically placed on a rock outcropping facing the lake surrounded by red and white pines. The view from the front porch is spectacular--a great place to have morning coffee, watch the hummingbirds, or enjoy a glass of wine with the sunset in the evening. While maintaining the natural character of the lodge, Wildloon has become your luxury vacation home. The unique gourmet kitchen includes many conveniences: microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, kitchen-aide mixer, electric griddle, and an antique style 6-burner gas stove. The gas grill out back is ready for your freshly caught walleye. The upstairs of this tri-level log home features a full bathroom and two bedrooms--one with a queen log bed, the other with a full log bed. The back stone porch includes a full-sized futon along with a second bath with shower. Sleeps 6

Wilderness Setting: Wildloon is set in a wilderness location, 20 miles from even a gas station. We have 20 acres of mature pine forest and 1300 feet of water. Loon's Echo Wilderness Retreat is located just 3 miles West of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota. It is about 50 miles WEST of Ely and 40 miles EAST of Orr, Minnesota. It is like you have a cabin at your wilderness campsite. Forget your worries as you relax on our porch, gaze at the sunset, or listen to the loons. We have paddled the four miles up to Table Rock falls and never saw another canoe or boat. We are very secluded. It is like having a luxury log home on your campsite in the wilderness. Come and enjoy the beauty and solitude of the BWCAW from the comfort of our log home! Canoes and mountain bikes are included with your rental of our Wildloon Log Home.

Area attractions: Loon's Echo Wilderness Retreat has 20 acres and 1300 feet of waterfront is available for your use. We are located on the chain of lakes of the wild and scenic Vermilion River (Vermilion River Lake) and only a few miles from the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness and Voyageur National Park. There are numerous waterfalls and rapids within a few hours paddle of the retreat. You can hike or snoeshoe our 20 miles of trails. There are over 100 miles of abandoned logging roads that offer additional hiking and excellent mountain biking opportunities. Points of interest include: Table Rock Falls, Vermilion Falls, Vermilion River Gorge, Astrid Lake Trails, and Devils' Cascade Trail. Majestic bluffs, hidden lakes, waterfalls, berry patches and a canoe paddle to ancient Indian pictographs will lure you onto the water and into the wilderness.

Notes:

Wildloon has everything you would need for your week in the wilderness. You provide your own food and drinks. It is like you have your own cabin in the woods...everything else is there. Full kitchen supplied with oven, stove, toaster, microwave, griddle, blender, even a kitchen-aide mixer! Spices and some of the essentials are here...oil, vinegar, flour, sugar, and spices. Owner lives nearby and will loan you anything you may need, if they have it. Kitchen towels, hot pads, white towels for the bathroom are all provided. (Bring your own food, beach towels and toiletries.) We are located 60 miles from groceries so make sure you bring everything you need!

Amazing Christmas in the wilderness!

Our small family wanted to get out of the city and experience a true “Northwoods Christmas.” The Wild Loon log cabin at Loon’s Echo was the perfect setting. The two wood burning fireplaces kept the cabin cozy and warm; the vintage stove was a great for making cookies to snack on as well as our full Christmas dinner. The beds were comfortable and lent themselves to a great night’s sleep.

Outside, we enjoyed snowshoeing in the woods, sledding, and listening to the wolves howl from across the river (to the amazement of our 3 year old). Maggie left us a tree tag so that we were able to go into the surrounding Superior National Forrest and cut down our very own Christmas tree. She was even kind enough to leave a tree stand, lights, ornaments and candy canes for us to decorate with!

We will definitely be back … perhaps in the warmer months to explore the area by canoe. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay!

A Great Family Getaway!

A great place for our family vacation! Wildloon, the main lodge, was a perfect setting and accommodation for our family gathering point to meet for breakfast & dinners, and playing games by the fireplace in the evening. The lodge was spacious enough for our large family, but yet, still provided the comfort and privacy needed in the separate bedrooms, and surrounding cabins. The view of the Vermilion River is breath-taking from the front porch and you have access to so many trails to hike or bike just outside your door. Several family members took their daily walks to the lake, while others explored the nearby trails and did some blueberry picking. Loon’s Echo provided a great place for groups to split up into their desired activities some went on a 5 hour canoe trip to see Table Rock Falls, while others took shorter trips up and down the river. For our avid fisherman they would go out for daily trips, while others caught their day’s catch right off the docks. If you’re looking for a vacation in the wilderness, yet with all the amenities of home, then Loon’s Echo is the right choice.

Better than the Boundary Waters

If you want a truly wilderness vacation that you can fit into a tight schedule, look no further than Wildloon. During our four day stay, we saw exactly two other human beings - much less human interaction than you would likely find in the BWCA. Wildloon is a perfect place to go if you want to get all the perks of a boundary waters trip without dealing with a permit and hauling or buying all the necessary gear. The fishing, hiking, canoeing, and abundance of wildlife at Wildloon are all world class and literally right outside your cabin door.

The cabin itself is absolutely charming, with great Northwoods decor and two real wood buring fire places. We love to cook, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make elaborate meals and homemade breads every day. Additionally, the beds are quite comfortable and there are screened windows which allow you to listen to loons, wolves, and other wildlife as you fall asleep.

Peter and Maggie (the owners) are genuinely kind and decent people. They are always available should you ever need anything or want to chat, but rarely, if ever, seen if you don't. In short, all aspects of our stay at Wildloon were perfect.

If you are looking for a wilderness experience with all the comforts of home, look no further. I have stayed at Loons Echo on three separate occasions and have nothing but fond memories and positive things to say about this property. Along with Wildloon, I have also stayed in Mallard,one of the other two available cabins for rent. All three cabins offer the comforts of home, but with amazing wilderness views and privacy. While staying at Loons Echo you will enjoy sitting in front of a campfire, swimming and fishing off the dock and paddling around the lake. Boundary Waters Wilderness is also nearby if you enjoy canoeing.

On past trips, my family and I have travelled into the relatively near by town of Ely, Minnesota to shop, dine and visit the Wolf Retreat. If you like to see wildlife up close there is also a bear sanctuary near by. Once you arrive at this property you may not want to leave. It truly is a comforting escape into the woods. Each cabin offers all the amenities of home and the photos accurately reflect how clean and well maintained this property is. The owners are friendly and helpful and you truly can't go wrong staying in any of the available cabins.

Hands down I would recommend Loons Echo to any group of people looking for a get away, but without having to truly rough it. Your privacy is respected and with all the available activities you can make your vacation into any experience you desire.

If you are looking for a very secluded and solitude place to lay back or just kick back,this definitely is the place for you!! We've been enjoying this area and site for the last 10 years and no two trips are ever the same. We are so happy with the experience of these trips, that we now go twice a year (each May on opening week of Northern Pike season and again in late September to enjoy the beautiful fall colors) and wish we could go more often.

The fishing is fantastic in the Spring (30-35 Northerns a day is average with some measuring between 35" to 40") and just as productive in the Fall.

You couldn't ask for better people than the hosts...they bend over backwards for you to insure your stay is as enjoyable as can be. The site is well kept and the accomodations are better than any picture can describe. You have to experience it yourself to really appreciate all the ammenities this place offers!!

The neat part is the solitude and seclusion....no sound but the wind in the pines and in the evening an occasional owl or two and every now and then a wolf is heard....no sirens, no traffic noise, no whistles!!!

If you are looking for a place off the beaten path, please believe me, this the PLACE!!!!

The desciption of this place says it all, come to Northern Minnesota to enjoy the great outdoors...if you do I know you'll come back!!!!!
