Hilo two bedroom apartment

  • 5 of 5
I loved the enclosed screen room -enjoyed having my breakfast out there. Neighbors and manager friendly and helpful! The coqui frogs lulled me to sleep at night! Great price for being within walking distance to town and McDonald's. It was like having a cozy corner penthouse. Also I loved watching the rainforest across the street and view of the observatory on the volcano. The kitchen was easy to cook in. Everything was clean. This is a good base for traveling on this side of the island! This place is family friendly in terms of price and sleeping space. There were beds for 6 in here. I would definitely return and stay here again!

mature couple

You get what you pay for. Minimal everything, old and run down. No internet connection most the week we stayed which posed major problems for my work. The street next to the condo is very noisy in the evening, more so on the weekends. I cannot recommend this place to anyone, the only advantage for us was to be able to cook; with old, scratched Teflon pans and chipped plates it could be OK when you are 19 or 20 years old. Ugh!

Owner's Response: The wifi connection was restored. The previous guests switched the wires around. I had tech support come out to fix the problem.
I offer a clean and affordable Apt. for guest that are on a budget, and yes,"You get what you pay for." If you want the "Ritz", you have to pay for it.
I would not recommend this "mature couple" to anyone.

Comfortable low-cost accommodation

  • 3 of 5
Spent two nights with three other adults in this apartment.
Kitchen is sparsely equipped. Especially needs some more glasses, both drinking and wine.
Only living room seating is the futon, which needs a new mattress cover. The existing cover had two bedroom blankets draped over it to cover. Carpeting is not in the condition that you would want to sit on the floor to watch TV - so needed to use hard kitchen chairs to watch a movie together. I would recommend replacing kitchen chairs with an upholstered dining room chair, so that can use for living room as well.
The apartment was extremely damp. As there is no air conditioning, it really needs a de-humidifier. Towels used for a shower won't dry after one use hanging up.
Twin bedroom would benefit from matching bed spreads.
Apartment was clean. Not sure about being able to walk downtown, as we had a car and went sightseeing with it. If you have a car, be very careful entering the parking lot as the driveway is very steep - so our car bottomed out even going very slowly.

Our Stay in Hilo

  • 3 of 5
Plusses: The location is good, walking distance to Old Town Hilo and the daily Farmer's Market, and striking distance to major Hilo attractions by car. Apartment is clean and basic amenities provided. Lots of closet and dresser space, which was helpful for a month long stay. Having 1 1/2 bathrooms was very convenient. Although it was just the two of us, the unit could sleep up to 6 people. Apartment manager was approachable and helpful. The pool was kept well maintained. The price was commensurate with what was provided. Drawbacks: Noisy at night from the coquie frogs and traffic. My husband found the noise level manageable, I needed to use earplugs. Neighbor noise came through walls. There were a handful of maintenance issues we elected to take care of ourselves, but the cost was minimal and we notified the owner who volunteered to reimburse us. The appliances were functional but could use a little maintenance. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Condo in Hilo

  • 4 of 5
Although the condo was accurately described in terms of looks and location, unfortunately it was not quiet due to construction all week. My partner and I stayed at the condo from May 16-23, 2013 and the parking lot construction work was what we woke up to all week. I called David about the construction and he informed me that he was disappointed too about the construction because he was told that all of the construction work would be completed before we arrived. Overall, the condo was good but was a bit outdated. New paint and light fixtures are definitely needed to spruce up the condo. It was nice to have more condiments and utensils in the kitchen. It was also nice to have a fruit basket prepared upon our arrival. The condo is affordable but certainly not luxurious. If you have trouble sleeping through the night, I strongly recommend good earplugs due to the frogs. Lastly, David was really friendly and wanted us to call him at any time if we had questions or concerns.

Good experience overall

  • 4 of 5
The spaces are good consider it is an apartment. It also has a good sized balcony as it is at the end of building. The 1.5 bathroom is also convenient.

During the night, there are certainly many animal (bird, frog, insects) background noise, plus a small stream running right outside the building, as well as raining. The owner told us these beforehand, and we quickly get used to it. To me, it was actually a pleasant experience of something different -- isn't that what you are looking for during vacation? (There were also some traffic noises but not too much.)

During our stay, we need a hair dryer as the hair would not dry easily amid the wet air. We did not find one in the room but was able to borrow one from the property manager right downstairs who is a very nice person.

It would be good if there could be a bit more kitchen supplies: salt would be a must. A couple more chairs would also help. There is no elevator and the apartment is on the 3rd floor.

Overall, it was a what we expected and we had a nice 3 day stay.
