Overview

Cruz Bay House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Loft, Sleeps 6

Island Living is the private home of St. John Artist/Photographer Constance Wallace, who is taking time away from the island to travel.

Island Living is located off the South Shore Road, about a mile from the town of Cruz Bay, near The Westin Resort. The home overlooks Cruz Bay, Pillsbury Sound & St. Thomas. It shares a quiet, private road with 2 other homes. It's possible to walk down to town BUT the roads are VERY steep and narrow & walking back UP is difficult. While you'll be able to get a taxi to bring you home, it's best to arrange in advance when you want to have one pick you up at the house. For the most enjoyable vacation, we recommend you rent a vehicle.

The Great Room is at the center of the house. It includes the kitchen, dining bar & living room. The two Bedrooms are mirror images of each other, one on each side of the Great Room. A large, outdoor, covered deck spans the Great Room & both Bedrooms, facing the view. That entire side of the house has sliding glass doors and screens. Every room is airy & has high ceilings with tropical fans.

Each Queen Bedroom has its own 10,000 BTU A/C, full bath with shower & tub & a separate loft area for additional sleeping with Full bed.

Island Living has been well cared for and well maintained. The attention of an enthusiastic owner in residence is obvious both inside & out. The property around the home contains pebbled pathways that wind gracefully through the native gardens and natural volcanic rock features.

The main part of the home was designed & built using Cypress & other local hardwoods in 1980 by a local builder who had an idea that was original at the time?that some visitors to the island might like to rent a house for their stay. Then, the primary choices of accommodations for visitors to St. John were either the luxury of Caneel Bay or the adventure of camping at Cinnamon Bay or Maho Bay. Constance Wallace purchased Island Living from him in 1985 and began living there. In 1991, she added a separate apartment below that she used as an office, studio & gallery. That part of the house is occupied year round by another St. John artist. The main (upper) part of the home is available & described here.

Well-behaved PETS are welcome.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Constance,

Dennis and I wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful time at Island Living. It could not have been more perfect. Lovely home, lovely views, and even lovelier people living below. Michael and Claudia are sweet, sweet people. We feel lucky to have met them and lucky to have found your lovely home. We spent many relaxing hours on the deck taking in the wonderful views. Perfect place to unwind...just what we needed on this vacation. Our stay was during a full moon, on the full moon night we woke up to catch it setting over St. Thomas...just beautiful! We miss being there already and hope to return soon!

Best regards,

Tropical Paradise

  • 5 of 5
My December trip to St. John couldn't have been better. Location, Location, Location. This vacation house was perfect. On a hill overlooking Cruz Bay, it has spectacular views and is surrounded by lush tropical greenery and singing birds. It is close enough to walk down to restaurants and shopping, but believe me, even if you are a runner like I am you really need to rent a car to get back and forth. It is hilly! A lot of great snorkeling and hiking spots are just a short drive away, besides all the other water sports available to arrange in town. St. John is the least developed of the U.S. Virgin Islands, since two thirds of it is protected Virgin Islands National Park. This sets it apart from all other islands and beach resorts I have ever visited. It is gorgeous and still not overcrowded. And the comfortable accommodations made it perfect. The quiet and private living quarters had all the necessary amenities combined for a relaxing stay. My favorite restaurants were Sun Dog in Cruz Bay and for a very special romantic evening, a short drive away is Asolare. I felt like I was on the Amalfi Coast enjoying wonderful cuisine, looking from the hill top at a gorgeous sunset over Cruz Bay.

Best vacation we ever had!

  • 5 of 5
All I have to say is that your home is heaven!!!! Bob and I thoroughly enjoyed St. John and staying at your home. Your home is even better than the pictures. It had everything we needed and we really enjoyed sitting out on the porch watching the sunset over Cruz Bay. We were in love with the house and location. We even cooked at home a couple of nights. It was the best and most relaxing vacation we have ever had. The people on the island are so friendly. We will definitely return!!!!!
Thanks again for opening up your home to us!

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5
Although our visit was cut short by airline complications, we enjoyed our stay at Island Living. Our greeter was very informative and accomodating. The "Treehouse" is situated among lots of trees and flowers. Iguanas lounge in the treetops and the birdsongs fill the air. The view of the harbor is spectacular and the sunsets are breathtaking. We enjoyed snorkeling all over the island. Francis Bay was fantastic with its crystal clear waters and warm summer breezes. We will return to St John. So much to see, so little time. Enjoy this little house in the trees, we certainly did!

St Johns vacation home

The home was as described. The setting quite lovely with wonderful privacy and a beautiful view. The owner has furnished the home in a very comfortable fashion with a number of her very attractive island photos. The surroundings are very quiet, which is a nice break from dountown Cruz Bay. A short drive of a few minutes and you have access to a number of very good resturants in Cruz Bay and plenty of shopping.I was contacted by the owner during my stay to make sure everything was to my satisfaction. I would certainly reccomend a stay at this home.

The Perfect Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent two weeks in this lovely home. When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was that it looked exactly like the pictures, right down to the breeze blowing the curtains! The view from the deck is beautiful, the beds are comfortable, and the kitchen is stocked with any utensil or pan you could possibly need. Everything was clean and tidy. The house is nestled on the hillside, surrounded by tropical trees which keeps things cool and shady. We were very comfortable for our entire stay. It was our second trip to St. John, and by far the best of the two. We spent most of our time snorkeling; it was a short drive to several excellent snorkeling spots. We highly recommend doing the short "Lind Point Trail" down to Honeymoon Beach. There is an excellent reef there full of colorful fish, and a nice grassy area with sea turtles and a spotted eagle ray. Waterlemon Cay is another must snorkel. We did our grocery shopping at Starfish Market, which is a 3 minute drive; get ready for sticker shock, but they had everything we were looking for. There's a great little barbeque "shack" at the bottom of the hill called Candi's; very good, very affordable food. We eat pretty simply, but we did splurge at Morgan's Mango and it was fantastic. We love Coral Bay, which is about a 15 minute drive with unparalleled views along the way; it's worth checking out. The Westin is about a 3 or 4 minute drive, which was convenient as it's often where day cruises leave from. Jost Van Dyke with Cruz Bay Watersports was terrific.
Island Living is well named; after two weeks, we really felt like we "lived" on St. John. We should be so lucky! I would recommend this home to anyone. I hope we get to meet the owner some day; after living in someone's home, you feel like you know them. We love her and we haven't even met her!

Traditional St. John Charm

  • 5 of 5
My partner and I stayed at Island Living in January 2012. We chose to stay here because it reminded us of the rustic homes we had stayed in many years ago on vacations to St. John. This had been the “Pre-Mediterranean Villa” period, when St. John was simply about the Virgin Islands National Park and making a connection with nature. Everything about Island Living exceeded our expectations. The house is perched just above the town of Cruz Bay, surrounded by native greenery with cultivated gardens downslope. There is a lovely private view of Cruz Bay, its harbor & St. Thomas in the distance, from the covered deck which runs the length of the house. You really do get the feeling of being nestled in your own tree house. The accommodations are ample & spacious. We wanted for nothing—including beach gear. We will be back!
