Our beautiful beach house was recently built in the pure local Caribbean style. The house is situated in a private gated community comprised of 7 lots with 3 houses. It is very quiet and private. We have a direct and private access to the Playa Chiquita beach at 150 meters from the house. Our property is situated on a 5000 sq meters lot of which half is a garden of indigenous flowers, shrubs, matures trees and fruit trees and the other half contains mature trees and fruit trees.
The house has two stories. The lower floor has a wrap around tiled terrace with outdoor shower and sink, the half bathroom, the well equipped kitchen and dining room. There are also two hammocks and garden chairs.
The upper floor has a covered balcony, the two bedrooms with adjoining full bathrooms with views of the garden and the forest.
Playa Chiquita is situated at approx 7 km from Puerto Viejo where you may find all services including, ATM, pharmacies, groceries, restaurants, boutiques, internet etc.
Wildlife: From the comfort of your hammock you may see many different types of birds (especially in the early morning or late afternoon) including the toucan and several types of hummingbirds. The beautiful blue morpho butterfly visits the property several times a day. And if you are lucky and observant you may catch a glimpse of our resident sloth and howler monkeys.
You will be awakened every morning by the local howler monkeys.
Food and restaurants: The mutl-etchnic community of residents between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo brings to our local gastronomy a wide variety of grocery products and restaurants. There are so many great restaurants in this area. You may eat at a different place every night and have a truly wonderful experience. There are Costa Rican sodas (small local restaurants that prepare typical Caribbean cuisine), French, Italian, Argentinian, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Fusion etc...
The grocery stores sell local and imported products and have a great selection of wines and spirits. some very near the house prepare freshly baked croissants and sell delicious roasted chicken!
Beaches: The main attraction of the area are the beautiful Caribbean beaches. From our house you have a direct and private access to Playa Chiquita beach (150 meters away). This beach has many small bays that are like small swimming pools.
If you walk to the left of this beach (1 km away) you will arrive at the beautiful Cocles beach.
If you walk to the right you will arrive at the very popular Punta Uva beach.
For surfers, the Salsa Brava is situated at approx 4 km from the house towards Puerto Viejo.
Now the dust has settled from the New Year, it's time to reflect on our fantastic holiday to Costa Rica. Our stay at Playa Chiquita was the last leg of our holiday and spanned Christmas - the first we've ever spent abroad - and it didn't disappoint! Fantastic setting a stone's throw from the beach, with a short bike ride to the fantastic Punta Uva and Cocles beaches and only a slightly longer one to Puerta Viejo (two bikes supplied with villa). No TV in the property, but it has a very good Wifi connection, so the kids (we have two - 5 and 8) got their fix! There are two species of Sloth in Costa Rica and we had a representative of each sharing the same tree on Christmas Eve. Strongly recommended! Mark, Susan, Edan and Niall (UK)
The house is wonderful, well equipped with all basic appliances and good internet (we rented the house before and this is a great improvement). Also secure and clean. Housekeeping is provided and also two bikes (which are old but both working fine). Biking is one of the best ways to move around in Puerto Viejo.
Nice hammocks to rest and enjoy the view.
The rooms and bathroom on the second floor are very comfortable, with big windows facing the gardens, therefore you can enjoy them since you wake up or while you are showering (my favorite part of the house). The manager was also willing to solve quickly the questions and inquiries we had regarding the maintenance.
Another plus of the house are the well maintained gardens all over the big property, which makes it a delight for the eyes and senses and are great attractors of hummingbirds, butterflies (the blue morpho especially) woodpeckers, tangers, sloths (we had one of those wonderful visitors in one of the trees), just to mentioned some of the abundant species that comes daily to the garden.
The house is very well located, only 50 meters from the most superb beaches in Southern Caribbean (Playa Chiquita). The beaches in this area are great for swimming because the coral reefs protects them from dangerous currents, which is not the case in all the beaches. Also walkable distance to Punta Uva and Cocles (other super beaches in the area).
I stayed with my family, 6 year-old daughter and husband, and my daughter was delighted with the daily discoveries in terms of insects, butterflies, birds and animals, if you are a nature lover this is a good choice. You can find in the house guides to all the Costa Rican biodiversity, very handy and useful!
Duende Gourmet, a small but very good supermarket is located near the house, which is another plus. Every Saturday morning the small Organic Market in downtown Puerto Viejo, offers fresh organic vegetables, fruits, dairy products, honey, jams, homemade bread, cakes, and even organic soap. Be sure to arrive early in the morning to get the best products. Other restaurants are nearby which are very good such as Shawandah (french-Caribbean), Botánica Orgánica (great breakfast and lunch), and a good cup of coffee in the Swiss-owned café next to the School. If you want to have fresh bread every morning you can buy it in Vida Sana, also a walking distance.
I fully recommend the house! And hopefully will come in the near future!
We have come to Costa Rica at least 15 times. This garden home is perfect. It is set in a private gated community with two other homes, very close to the beach...just a 2 minute walk down the grassy path. We fell to sleep each night listening to the ocean and nature, around us.
The home is well appointed and maintained with beautiful gardens surrounding the home. We especially enjoyed the veranda on the second floor, as we could watch the birds and monkeys at play, as we sat and relaxed. The home has two new bikes for the guests to use at their leisure.
The home has two very modern bathrooms with instant hot showers. (remember to always turn the shower knob ALL the way "on" to receive balanced warm water. This is a secret we learned in Europe with instant hot systems).
The beds are very comfortable and the furnishings throughout the home very nice and attractive.
We found some local restaurants and a grocery store within a two to five minute walk. Marino's grocery store had EVERYTHING, (including whip cream for our sundaes ) and reasonably priced! We loved the fresh fish restaurant in Puerto Viejo and Robby, you cooked a great dinner! If you can, venture down toward Manzanillo and enjoy dinner at El Refugio Cafe, we shared our last night dinner here. Everything on the menu was great!
Oh! Be sure to buy large live lobsters from the fish market in the heart of downtown Puero Viejo........we have never had such great, fresh lobsters!
Thank you Pamela, the owner of Miraflores...for super great chicken and/fish tacos as we waited for Interbus to pick us up.
The home and grounds are daily maintained. We have stayed many places in Costa Rica, and this is definitely at the top of our list. We will be coming back again.
(I don't understand the review given by anonymous, as we did not experience any of the thinsgs she mentioned. Food for thought , maybe she had never traveled before, and did not understand she was visiting a tropical paradise, with jungles surrounding. And, if a person submits anything "anonymously" their comments are questionable.)

Retreat set in a lovely garden with a resident sloth and more butterflies and birds than I saw at Manzanillo. The house is close to the main road, so you do get traffic noise.
Main floor is set on the ground - there are the odd crawlies on the floor- wear flipflops. Basic stove for basic cooking. Fridge is small but adequate. Great for keeping beverages cold, but will freeze soft fruits even when set on the warmest setting. Nice selection of cookware, dishes, etc. Lacks comfortable seating inside for rainy days. Winder stairs that need user attention to avoid falls, especially when descending from the door on the 2nd floor. Bedrooms are spacious; beds comfortable, but have plastic mattress covers that make for an overly warm sleep.Mosquito nets.
Suicide showers, no hot water to faucets. No sound privacy between the bedrooms because of the ventilating walls.
Maid service is unpredictable but thorough.
House is a fortress when closed/locked up. The number of keys can be daunting and tiresome.
Neighbours' dogs announce your goings and comings to the beach, but are harmless. They also provide the occasional, unsolicited 5AM wake-up call, as do howler monkeys, although they were close just once in the 30 days I was there.
Chiquita beach is unswimmable in December, as are most beaches on this side of CR. The photos in the ad were taken at low tide, and definitely not in December or January.
New commercial building being constructed across the main road - perhaps closer groceries/sodas? El Duende is a good little store but not a huge selection. Fresh fruit and vegetables are usually in deplorable condition- go to the market in Puerto Viejo early on Saturday morning for produce. If you like fresh croissants, El Duende has some in the morning, but sell out by 11. They also have pizza, and around noon there are roasted chickens.
Owner responds in good time to email inquiries.
Bikes are old, and the one I was given to use required minor repairs to be usable.
A car is convenient but not necessary unless you don't want to walk/bike everywhere. Good parking by the house, but don't park under the mango tree in December when the fruits fall off.
Because of the stairs and the bugs on the ground floor, I do not recommend this house for families with small children.
