Large, comfortable pet-friendly outside property. Two pieces of property; walk out the back door to the lake. Pets welcome and love to run around in our large fenced in property next door.
We are two teachers who love swimming and the outdoors. We have four boys who love to swim and ski. We also have two boxers who occasionally come with us which is why we have half of our property fenced to allow the dogs to run and play. We are a pet friendly home.
Susan Knazek purchased this cottage in 1993
Situated on a lake, close to many historic areas for those who love to visit historic homes and watch historic events. The Bennington Monument was built in memory of The Green Mountain Boys from Vermont who did their part during the Revolutionary War. The monument looks just like the Washington Monument-you can go up into it and view 4 states-
VT. NH. MA. NY from the top-many historic homes and museums, plus battle reenactments in town.
House is very homey, nice and warm in the winter time and cool in the summer. Great views from wherever you sit. Walk right out the door to the lake and enjoy a morning ride in one of our 3 boats kept up there for your use-2 kayaks and 1 large canoe. Sit on the deck while you enjoy a cup of coffee, grill a meal on the charcoal grill, listen to the sounds of the stream or just enjoy the quiet and relax. It may sound corny but I say good bye to the lake whenever I leave, knowing I'll always return.
Just got back from a very restful vacation. Loved the canoe and kayaking with the kids. The house has a full kitchen which saved us money on eating out. We played lots of board games and spent lots of time at the "beach" two lots down and walking the dog around the neighborhood. The house is rustic and the spiral staircase made us a bit nervous. There is no wifi and the TV is very small with limited channels, but we weren't looking for luxury. We actually watched some kid movies on video tapes which my kids had never seen before. We enjoyed the sound of birds, frogs and a daily visit from a family of ducks. Great place for a quiet get away.
We had a wonderful time. This home is on Woodford Lake and has wonderful views, even in the winter, with the snow covered lake. The home was charming, neat and had enough room for our family. The downstairs had a family room with TV and bunk beds which was a perfect place for the kids to go. We would def. consider renting again!
We rented this house for 2 weeks and loved being on the lake. My children loved the canoes, the kayaks, the fishing and of course swimming. The small beach at the lake is just 2 lots over and the water is very clean. The house comfortably fit our party of 4-6. The water does have a "rusty" sort of smell but it was fine for showering and washing dishes. We brought gallons of drinking water with us and also found a really neat mountain spring spot halfway between Woodford & Bennington where the "locals" go to fill their water jugs with VT mountain spring water.
One note - if you are going to be renting for a week or longer and need to dump your garbage, you should go to the town hall in Bennington and get a free dump permit. The first day we went to dump our garbage they gave us a bit of a hassle because we had out of state plates; they thought we were coming from NY to dump our garbage (ha ha ummmm no). Once we had the permit we did not have a problem going every few days to drop off garbage and recycling.
Lots of great restaurants in Bennington to try - Ramunto's pizza was really good; Bennington Station, Madison Brewery & the Publyck House are also great places to have lunch or dinner. 30 minutes or so from Bromley, which has a great Mountain Adventure Park which my kids enjoyed. Less than 2 hours from Lake George, NY.
All in all a fun and relaxing vacation!
We had stayed for 3 night and had a great time! We loved the cabin, that had absolutely everything needed for fun times from good old music records, to games, books and cable. Kayaks were a hit for our 2 teens as well as us. Even with some unfortunate events at the end of our stay (storm, power failure etc) we had a good times and would love to return. Just a suggestion for the ones who is renting in summer - get a fan, it gets hot :)
Mila and family
We rented this out for a weekend to enjoy fall colours in Vermont. We were 5 people around 30s, no kids, no pets, from Jersey City, NJ.
+ Great sitting area with lake view
+ Music system : LP player!! (grease, billy joel..and a lot of old time LPs), 5 cd changer, radio and speakers in the living area.
+ Furnished kitchen (microwave, toaster, pans, cutlery, salt/pepper)
+ Friendly owner, deal executed via email, payment accepted via paypal
+ Separate grassy lot beside the house for pets (big enough for a large dog could run about a bit)
+ Close to hiking, AT trailhead 5 mins drive away
- no dishwasher
- 1 bathroom for an 8 people cabin
- Hard mattresses : this is an individual preference, I was okay with it. But something to keep in mind
- Bad water,Low water pressure. The water is very hard and has an unpleasant odour. This is probably true of the area and not specific to the cottage.
The cottage has beds for 8 (1 queen, 6 single). But there is not a lot of extra room for additional people if you are thinking of squeezing in people with their own sleeping bags.
There is a 2 person canoe by the lake..might be fun in warmer weather.
Feel sorry for reviewer (Edward E.N) but the property is not as remote as it seems from his review or the pictures. There is a general store within a mile where we bought breakfast (eggs, butter, sausages, local cheese) They also sell wines ,beer and drinking water. The distance between one house and next on the lake is no different than typical northeastern suburbia…which actually takes away a bit of the charm of being 'away' . There is also some car noise from the road.
Overall a good experience. I would recommended this place to friends with kids, pets.
Arrived on a Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm for a one week stay. Turned on the faucet and no water flow. Tried to contact owner multiple times. When we finally got a response we were advised that a plumber had been contacted in the local area. No plumber or house manager arrived that day. We had to do a "bucket brigade" to and from the lake with water in order to fill the toilet tank to flush. No drinking water available. Had to drive ten miles into town to get bottled water. Contacted owner again the following day. Again, advised plumber would arrive soon. Finally, at about 3:00 pm on Monday both the house manager and the plumber arrived. Turned out the water is very hard and had clogged the filters and restricted any flow of water. No showers, baths, or water to cook or drink with for almost two days. Owner advised us that she would credit the 24 hours back to us when she returned the security deposit. She never did. We lost two days of doing any activities on vacation waiting for a plumber to show up to fix the water. With five people (three children) it made for a very unpleasant start to the vacation. House manager advised me that the filters were just changed before the prior tenants had stayed here. Would not recommend this location, because you could get stuck in a remote site without water. View was nice, but I did not rent a house to go camping or backpacking inside a house.
