Romantic, newly remodeled water view cottage with gourmet kitchen; cozy, has a wood burning fireplace, Direct TV, and two sliding glass doors that open to the front deck--beautiful western view of Puget Sound, watch the sunset while eating dinner outside; master bedroom has queen size bed, sliding glass door to back porch, park-like view of large, open yard where deer gather; 2nd bedroom has double bed; county regulations and septic capacity prohibit more than 4 guests. Includes washer/dryer use, small deck in back. Perfect for that romantic Get Away for the Holidays!!! get away or writer's retreat!

Fall and Winter are great times to visit Herron Island: This is a peaceful time on the Island, after the summer holiday crowds have left. You can witness the deer rutting rituals from your deck, enjoy the solitude, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Herron Island is called 'The Jewel of S. Puget Sound'. It is a perfect getaway on a peaceful, private island and is only a 10 minute ferry ride from the Key Peninsula dock in Lakebay. The Island is small and can be easily navigated around by canoe or kayak. There are 7 miles of tree-lined country roads to walk or drive while enjoying views of the Olympic Cascades, Hartstine Island and Olympia. There are 2 community beaches and parks. Day trips can include Gig Harbor, Tacoma, Seattle and Port Townsend. Many other small towns and State parks are close by.

Quiet island with dirt roads.

We arrived at the ferry dock in Lakebay twenty minutes early for the 4pm ferry and missed the ferry by three cars (the ferry holds eleven cars). So we were happy when it came back to get us at 4:30 instead of making us wait until the 5pm scheduled time. The ferry guy walked up to our car to give us our visitor pass and collect our $22. If you want to be out of the car during the ferry ride, you should probably walk on, as we couldn’t open our doors after we loaded.

When we got off the ferry we were surprised to see dirt roads. We found the cabin easily and when we arrived Lyle was there. The DirectTV worked well as did the gas grill, but internet (DSL) didn’t work at all (our Verizon smart phone worked great though). The beds and the couch were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes and utensils.

August isn’t the best time to go because the west-facing deck gets pretty hot and we had to keep the curtains closed to try to keep it cooler inside. The swimming beach is very nice and there is a big fire pit there, unfortunately there was a burn ban during our stay. We enjoyed feeding the deer, but had to be very careful walking around because of their leavings. The island was very quiet, so sleeping was easy. Lyle and Gayle were great to work with. They returned our deposit through PayPal within hours of our departure. All in all, a good stay.

An Experience of a Lifetime

We will remember our weekend here as one of quiet solitude and sheer joy of feeding so many deer by hand. To actually get to touch these gorgeous wild creatures was a thrill we won't forget! Thank you for your warm hospitality and sharing your little piece of heaven! We will remember Herron Island always!

Peace and Quiet Paradise :)

I love this place. It was peaceful and quiet. People on the island are really friendly and you can feed the deer by hand. Good for kayaking, fishing, boating, and other water. There is also a playground, basketball courts, and an open field for kids to play. Thank you Lyle and Gayle for our wonderful stay at the cottage house. We will definitely come back next year. You deserve another five stars!!! :)

Corner of Paradise

Thank you so much for sharing your corner of paradise with us. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was special. The Kids hand-fed deer, played with raccoons and caught fish off the dock...where else could you do all that, while surrounded by the beauty and serenity of this Island! It's a vacation not to be forgotten.
