About Sierra Sugrue

Aloha! I am so honored and excited to share Aloha Falls with you. It is my dream of Hawaiian beauty and spirit. The past decade of my life has been spent nurturing the land here on the Big Island and pursuing the wisdom of various healing arts, including: massage, energy medicine, yoga, and plant medicine. My partner Troy and I focus much of our attention on creating the beauty of Aloha Falls.

Sierra Sugrue purchased this house in 2009

Why Sierra Sugrue chose Hilo

Hilo is the most gorgeous place in all of Hawaii! It is a sweet historic town with locally owned shops and modern comforts. The land is lush thanks to nightly rain fall. Waterfalls and black sand beaches are everywhere, along with an abundance of farms growing exotic organic produce! It was my dream to find a place in Hilo and Aloha Falls is located on the exclusive neighborhood called Reed's Island.

What makes this house unique

The view and sound of the waterfall made this home absolutely perfect. Also, the attention to detail in building.. All of the furniture, cabinetry, and artwork are handcrafted and locally produced. There are feelings of simplicity, peace, and profound elegance here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Everything about this house is amazing! From the waterfall in the backyard to the sounds of creatures waking up at night! We enjoyed all of the animals we saw (except for the mosquitoes) and the geckos are everywhere! Even in the house a few times! Some places I suggest trying to visit are Akaka FAlls, the most active volcano in the world (at night its amazing to see the orange glow but make sure to bundle up because it gets cold), snorkeling in Kona - it was great. Overall this was amazing and the house is gorgeous! Thank you!

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5
I can't wait to go back.

The house and property are even nicer than it looks in the photos. The house is very clean. There has been a lot of attention to detail for the comfort and convenience of the guests. The kitchen has everything you need to make meals. The normal condiments are provided. There was even a large pitcher of herb infused cold water in the fridge. There are towels, hair dryers, etc. You really don't need anything but your clothing to go there and enjoy the stay.

The home is located in a residential area, but it is so secluded due to the waterfall and lush vegetation, you feel that you have arrived in a rain forest. There are coqui that sing you to sleep at night, along with the sounds of the waterfall in the distance. Amazing. The beds are incredibly comfortable. We even had tempurpedic style pillows on the beds.

The location is very centrally located. It took about 10-15 minutes to get there from the airport. Town is just a few minutes away by car. Nearby is Rainbow falls (you could actually walk there from the house). About an hour away (or a bit less) are the volcanoes and other waterfalls (Akaka). The town of Hilo is not large and busy like Honolulu. It is very welcoming and relaxing. The people are incredibly friendly.

During our stay, there was quite a bit of rain. Apparently, Hilo is located on the 'wet' side of the island. No matter - if it was raining to hard to go out, we were perfectly happy to sit in the hammock chairs on the enclosed/screened in and covered back deck while sipping tea :) The house/property were as much of a vacation as the surrounding sites. Another plus - because it rained frequently, we had a lot of wet clothing. We were very thankful for the washer and dryer available for use in the house.

We were fortunate to meet the owner of the property. She is a lovely person and really tries hard to make sure the guest are comfortable.

I am starting to save up now to make a return trip. This was one of the best vacations we have ever taken! You will return from you stay fully refreshed - it really is impossible to get stressed in this location:)

Enjoy!

Beware

  • 1 of 5
Our stay at Aloha Falls in summer 2014 makes a good story. The hammock and the view from that porch is beautiful and serene. I love the gigantic vegetation surrounding the home. You feel like you are in the jungle! However, we were overall disappointed being in Hilo (not much to see and do in Hilo) and the house itself. The lower living space of the house had dead bugs, several windows without glass just bug mesh, kitchen was unfit for any cooking. Nightly crying from the frogs made it unbearable to sleep with missing windows. Getting to the waterfall is downright dangerous. Unable to swim or go near the water due to mosquitoes. Just lots of clutter around the back yard and the building next to the water was not inviting due to clutter. The upstairs was much better than downstairs. However, the house can use deep cleaning. The mats in the kitchen are tattered, dirty and worn. The floor was sticky. Garbage lid was broken so, needed to use a phone book to keep it closed! Spider webs were on the ceilings and cockroaches were found in the kitchen. I have been fair to share the positives and many negatives of our stay so, be aware.

Owner's Response: After almost 3 years of renting my very special home, this was my first dis-satisfied guest :( . Thank you for your time in reading this owner response as well as close to 40 other 5 star reviews..
As far as the first complaint - not much to do in Hilo (or the house itself): There aren't enough characters provided in this response for me to list all the potential activities, sights, and good fun to have in Hilo.. Here's a few: hikes, active volcano, tallest mountain on earth (Mauna Kea), zip lines, fun places to eat, boutique and craft shopping, beautiful beaches, etc. Inside the house is a (very) mini library, DVDs, games, and outside the house you CAN access the waterfall and thoroughly enjoy swimming (read previous reviews), walk into downtown Hilo or to other gorgeous waterfalls including 'Rainbow Falls'.
The lower unit is primarily for extra bedrooms, a bathroom and fun lounge area. Its true that it is not an ideal cooking space, although, there are ample supplies, dish ware, fridge, and propane stove. There are several screened in windows to allow constant trade wind breezes, but each bedrooms has fully functioning windows. Hilo is a jungle - there may be dead bugs, no matter how well we clean! Coqui frogs create loud jungle sounds at night, however many guests in the past have recorded the sounds to help them sleep on their return home
Getting to the waterfall is not too difficult of a trek unless you are physically injured, disabled, or unfit in anyway. We provide bug spray to help with the mosquitoes - but once again, you are in the jungle!!
The upstairs unit IS deeply cleaned after every departure. The kitchen floor mats and trash bin have been replaced. Sticky floor may have been an experience of humidity and sweaty feet! As far as spider webs and cockroaches - I will re-iterate that this is a tropical rain forest.. We do our absolute best to keep Aloha Falls immaculate but in the tropics, bugs are part of the package. It is VERY important that you keep counters and other surfaces clean to keep the critters out.
My only regret is that this renter did not notify me during their stay that they were unhappy. Many of these complaints could have beed resolved on the spot! If you are a guest in the future, please do not hesitate to inform me if the house is not to your level of satisfaction and our staff will do our best to remedy the situation ASAP.
Thanks again for your time. Blessings of Aloha to All - Sierra

Escape from reality!

  • 5 of 5
I wanted an escape from everyday for my first trip to Hawaii. Aloha Falls provided everything I Was looking for. It is in a secluded residential area, so if you are looking for crowds and noise and nightlife this is not for you. If you are looking for tranquility and nirvana, look no further. The house is everything advertised. Wake up to birds and sounds of the forest. Swim in your own spring and waterfall. Really take in the most of your trip and get a massage from Sierra, it was perfect before my return to reality! !

Great location spot in Hilo.

  • 5 of 5
Sierra has a fabulous home in a very beautiful location. Everything is accurate as listed. Sierra also provided all we needed to make our stay enjoyable. Being that it is a rainforest area, one should expect numerous rain showers, but they were always brief. We really enjoyed the tranquility of the location. The home also is within walking distance of the downtown Hilo area where there are many restaurants and also the farmers market which should not be missed. We explored the Volcano National Park as well as snorkeled in the nearby tide pools. A trip to see the Akaka Falls State Park was also well worth the time.
Everything in Sierra's home was in perfect condition. We thank her for the welcoming gift basket which included wonderful Hawaiian soaps to use. We liked them so much, we bought more at the farmers market to give to others as gifts. We also rented a car from her which saved us much money over the cost of a rental from a company.
If you plan on vacationing in the Hilo area, this home is the best rental you will find! I would definitely recommend it to a friend or relative. Another tip for those who vacation here, there is a book on the island that has tips from persons who stayed previously with places to visit and things to do as well as restaurant recommendations. These are well worth reading to assist you in your vacation planning. Enjoy!

Best July 4th EVER on our own private Waterfall!

  • 5 of 5
I hesitate about writing this because Aloha Falls is, without a doubt, Hawaii's best kept secret. But they deserve it, so here goes. Spectacular service from the host and staff that incorporates family-like friendliness and ease with luxury amenities and perks. And the location - wow, just wow. You get comfy in one of the two oversized terrace hammocks and look out at the property's private waterfall and mermaid lagoon. Yes, you have your OWN waterfall when you stay here. Plus the food is all the organic goodness you can wish for, the massages by Sierra were OMGoddess amazing, the beds are nice and new and plush, and the rates are VERY reasonable for what you get. Yes we'll be back!

Location: Paradise!! In the heart of Hilo

  • 5 of 5
My inspiration for the stay was a vacation from the daily.. This felt like an oasis of leisure and relaxation. The setting is so convenient for leaving to go adventure around this island or just making it a private star gazing night from the lanai instead. My friends and I are still talking about that magical weekend!
Everything about Sierra's description is true, the layout is just so quick and easy to find. My guess is a few miles walking distance to the Farmer's market, and other fantastic shopping or dining locations. The amenities were over the top fantastic! I had the best nights sleep in months, and our swims in the waterfall were epic. Clean, stocked, and super fun kitchen for many great meals standing or sitting while you can't help but enjoy the forest canopy.
I recommend the stay, after a weekend at this house you'll know why vacations create memories for life
