GRACIOUS LOKILANI-SERENE COTTAGE-PERFECT CLIMATE-CENTRAL LOCATION

Waimea - Kamuela House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

The Lokilani Hale is prefectly located on the dry and sunny side of Waimea (Kamuela). Our peaceful, two acre retreat is ideally situated 5 miles up from the best Kohala Beaches and 5 miles down from Waimea Town.

The mountain and ocean views are enhanced by the mild temperature our 1700' elevation provides. This private cottage is a romantic honeymoon hide-a-way or comfortable 2 bedroom home base for a family on an adventure. Enjoy the luxuious spa bathroom complete with copper soaking tub for two and private garden.

You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, bodyboarding and snorkeling.

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing oppportunities. Head to the Paniolo Town of Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries.

There's no better way to experience the amazing cultural diversity of Hawaii Island than to visit one of the farmers’ markets that take place all arround the island. You’ll find fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables used in Hawaii Regional Cuisine, exotic varieties that are as intriguing as they are tasty plus an eclectic collection of prepared foods. The market is also a great place to pick up handmade artwork or a unique gift and strike up a conversation with the artist who made them.

Waimea Town is the perfect starting point for a trip to the Volcano National Park. A memorable drive to Hilo along the Hamakua Coast offers breathtaking views of historic Waipio Valley. This area is also home to Akaka Falls, one of Hawaii's most famous. You'll see deep water-carved gulches and valleys, thick with tropical foliage. Stop and tour gardens full of exotic plants and orchids.

For adventure of a higher nature, the 13,700 foot summit of Mauna Kea provides dramatic scenery and an unforgettable visitor experience. The W. M. Keck Observatory provides a visitor’s gallery with exhibits describing astronomy research and star gazing.

PEACEFUL RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Lokilani for 9 nights to celebrate our anniversary and couldn't have found a more perfect place. The cottage itself is absolutely beautiful and very well taken care of. It is evident that much love and thought were invested in creating a place of quiet retreat. Located in the Waimea Valley, you will be nestled into the soft hills with the most amazing views. There are bountiful herbs growing right outside the main entry and Matt will welcome you with kindness and generous offerings from his garden, not to mention eggs from his sweet chickens. You are a very scenic 10 minute drive from some of the most beautiful beaches we encountered on the island, as well as Waimea town, where we found yummy gluten free breakfast bars at the local coffee shop!

You will have everything you need provided for you in this home, and Matt was a phone call away whenever we needed anything. We drove all around the island and spent 2 days on the Volcano side, immediately missing the special calm of Waimea. It has certainly become our favorite part of the Big Island and largely because of our experience staying at the Lokilani.

Favorite restaurants nearby include the Red Water Cafe, Blue Dragon Musiqarium, and Seafood Bar! Highly recommend the same guidebook listed: "Big Island Revealed" for useful tips. Our favorite activities included visits to the Waipio Valley, numerous beaches recommended in the guidebook (including Punalu'u or Black Sand Beach where sea turtles are frequent, tide pools at Wawaloli Beach, and our favorite swimming beaches minutes from the cottage - Hapuna & Mauna Kea Beach next to each other). Also recommend the dolphin swim & nighttime manta ray snorkel with Coral Reef Adventures - absolutely magical!!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that Ana enjoyed everything that we love about our retreat. The quiet calmness and the wonderful climate our location has to offer is exactly why Lokilani is where you want to return to after a day of exploration. We enjoy sharing the organic fruits and veggies from the gardens and "The Girls" are more than happy to provide eggs.

We hope Ana will return for another visit. We enjoyed having her as a guest and enjoyed sharing the Aloha of our home.

A SPECIAL PLACE

  • 5 of 5
Just returned from 12 days at Lokilani. It was simply wonderful!! First off, Matt was quite the host. He not only shared his recommendations about our adventures on Big Island, but shared all the wonders of the property. We loved having fresh eggs from the girls, quite an experience for us. We marveled at all his successes with growing herbs, fruits and vegetables and enjoyed them as if they were treats because we knew all the care that was involved. Everything we learned kept making the experience more special.

The house also was incredible. Everything we needed was there. And the outside kitchen was the best! Matt put a lot of thought into everything he put into the house. It was so comfortable. Simply opening the windows and running the fans we always enjoyed a cool breeze and great sleeping weather.

We frequently went into the town of Waimea to pick up anything we needed and enjoyed the local restaurants. One morning we decided to try Hawaiian Style Cafe for breakfast and what a treat it was. We discovered Blue Dragon Restaurant on our last weekend (only open Thursday thru Sunday) and enjoyed live music and great food. Venturing out to the towns around the island was lots of fun for dining treats, shopping and exploring. Hilo, Hawi, Greenville Coffee Plantation, drive on Saddle Road, Scenic Route north of Hilo, Volcano National Park, farmers markets, and everything inbetween...be sure to stop and check out each little town along the way.

We enjoyed the beaches and the hike connecting them from Spencer Beach Park to Mau'umae to Mauna Kea to Hapuna. It was important to us to catch the sunset daily if possible. We also enjoyed hiking Waipio Valley, Pololu, .....

We strongly recommend this spot and will never forget it. Thanks Matt.

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!

  • 5 of 5
Well, I'm so sorry our stay is over. Everything has grown so much. Gordon and I love staying with Matt and Rose. They bend over backward to make sure our stay is wonderful. Now, since they have planted all these edible plants...and with the eggs from "the girls", you hardly have to shop for food! As usual, the accommodations are excellent, views are beautiful, and the birds!!! What a way to wake up! Love it !
Thank you so much Matt and Rose, we just love visiting Hawaii and staying with you. The beach is minutes away, and Waimea is minutes away!! We were going to go out for dinner, but just stayed in because...why go out when you have perfection at home!!!

BEAUTIFUL AND PEACEFUL PROPERTY

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from a three week stay at Lokilani Hale and had a wonderfully relaxing visit. The location is perfect for a retreat with the best beaches on the island minutes away and the convenience of groceries and restaurants just up the hill in Waimea. Everything is just as it appears on the website but better. We enjoyed just hanging out in the evenings watching the sunsets from the lanai and the evening star gazing was amazing! Matt was a gracious host and treated us to fresh papaya from the garden and farm fresh eggs. We appreciated being able to save our kitchen scraps to feed the chickens and that there was recycling available. Our last day we drove up to Mauna Kea for the sunrise which was beautiful and our other highlights were night diving with the manta rays and kayaking out to Captain Cook Monument with a pod of spinner dolphins. We loved everything about the big island and hopefully can return soon for another visit. Thank you Matt and Rose for sharing your piece of paradise with us!

VERY PLEASANT STAY AT THIS LOVELY HOME

  • 5 of 5
Just returned from a very pleasant stay at this lovely home. Matt is an extremely gracious host and did everything possible to make my stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. The home is as lovely as it appears in the pictures. It's also ideally located: on the warm, sunny side of the island; away from the Kona and Waikola tourist crowds, and peaceful and secluded; yet just a short hop to the two best beaches in Hawaii--Hapuna and Mauna Kea--and also the scenic country town of Waimea. Loved my time here!

FINE FOR TWO

  • 4 of 5
I'd love to give this house a 5! The owners are very nice and generous people. The location is great for accessing the amenities of Waimea and the beaches down the hill. The climate at the top edge of the desert is pleasantly warm and dry. It's quiet and peaceful, with expansive views. My concern involves the floor plan, and the problems it would impose for two couples, or a couple with older children.

The house was obviously set up to have a bedroom at one end, a large kitchen in the middle, and a large living room at the other end, with a bathroom behind it. However, due to the presence of a huge copper trophy bathtub, that arrangement is totally scrambled.

Now, the bedroom is the kitchen, but it's still lit like a bedroom. The limited area means a nonfunctional total of 6 sq ft of counter space, so toasters, coffee maker, microwave, etc are stored in what should be a closet. If you lug out the microwave, it literally eats up all available counter space! Since the refrigerator is in the only other closet, the house has no closets. No drawers, either.

The kitchen space in the center of the house is now a gigantic bathroom, and its position at the house's hub means that going from the kitchen to the living room and from either to the patio involves transiting the bathroom! In the middle of this space is a giant copper tub that comes thigh-high on a 6' man. To practice getting in, just step into your kitchen sink! Now imagine that the bottom of the sink reaches the ground, and no step is provided to get in! Or out.

Since the bedroom is now the kitchen, the living room contains a large 4-poster bed, which leaves room for only two chairs, set at a painful angle to a bolted-down TV. The extra bedroom is small, not really suitable for a couple.

For my wife and I, the idiosyncrasies of the design were bearable, although working in the kitchen was painful. A couple with a small child or two would be OK. For two couples, though, the inevitable privacy and space issues could become more than annoying.

If only the bedroom were the bedroom, and the spacious central room leading outside functioned as a big open kitchen, with the tub and bath moved to the second bedroom. With the living room fitted out with a big hide-a-bed couch, this house would be so much more comfortable and practical.

For a couple, the positives far, far outweigh the negatives, and we had a good stay. But as you add people and those people require space and privacy, beware!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments, we are always looking for ways to improve our place. We are adding more counter space to the kitchen so all the extra appliances will be ready to use.The large flat screen TV is not bolted down, just plastic on wood. This unique space is a vacation rental, not a tract house.
