We spent two glorious weeks in this Puako condo. Very roomy, everything you could possibly need for a short or long stay, comfy beds, nice lanai with a beautiful view of ocean out front and the mountain behind, two pools a regular and wading pool. We even saw 5 wild turkeys out the back door. While the beach out front is not the best for swimming, good for kids though, it was great for seeing the turtles, looking in the tide pools and watching the sunsets. Beach 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea just a short car trip up the road. We would have liked to snorkel the Puako reef but surf conditions were too rough and Beach 69 was only good on one of our days. Hapuna is a huge beach with good snorkelling on the north end and good boogie boarding but Mauna Kea was our favourite but you have to go early to get a parking spot from the hotel. The condo location was perfect for exploring the north end of the island and down to the many beaches south to the airport and the resort areas of Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Lani and Waikoloa. Loved it all.
We loved the condo. It isn't huge and impersonal and everyone was friendly. The lanai was small but perfectly equipped with 2 adirondack chairs, a table and chairs and barbecue. The kitchen had better utensils and equipment than we have at home, and we really appreciated having a safe. We loved all the beach and snorkeling equipment. It was so convenient not to have to rent fins (we had brought our own snorkels and masks) and we made good use of the beach chairs, the mats, the noodles. There was a closet full of other beach equipment we didn't get to use. Best of all, right across the street is access to beaches we had to ourselves. Great for sunsets and snorkeling. Other fine beaches are very close by. We enjoyed visiting all the dogs in the office -- anyone who rescues dogs is a friend of ours! We also loved having the store next door. All in all, a wonderful place.
"You will enjoy visiting Puako, especially if you stay at this property. The condo is quiet, fresh and clean; tastefully decorated, and fully stocked with a brand new washer/dryer; towels, sumptuous bedding, CD’s, pool toys, snorkeling gear and most importantly – beach chairs! I was so impressed with the fully-equipped kitchen, that we made it a point to make dinner a couple times during our stay.
Outside, the resident manager is constantly at work pruning, cleaning and maintaining the lush foliage that surrounds the pristine pool. We really felt the Aloha spirit every time we stepped into the elevator, as there was a fragrant arrangement of newly picked plumeria blossoms that she had lovingly placed there.
There’s onsite parking and, get this, a quaint local grocery right next door that carries everything, including our favorite bottle of red wine that we never expected to find outside of the Bay Area! Public access to the beach is just across the street.
Our 8-day stay was magical. We sat out on the lanai and sipped cocktails or had breakfast and dinner while looking out over the ocean. In a stroke of good fortune, we even watched a beautiful lunar eclipse. The warm tropical breezes waft through the condo assisted by the overhead ceiling fans, but you can even crank up the air conditioner if you like to sleep cuddled up in a comforter.
Believe the photos on the website. The reality is even better. And the management! The people at 2 Papayas are responsive and friendly. They went completely out of their way to see that we had a pleasant stay. I’m sure that guests would enjoy being at any property that they manage.
Finally, don’t miss nearby Beach 69 and Hapuna Beach. For shopping and dining, Waikaloa and Mana Lani Resorts are just a 10 minute drive away. Sunsets are magnificent. And of course, the Big Island speaks for itself.
The owner was very helpful with e- mailed directions, met us at the condo and showed us around , recommended places to eat. Even sent e- mails and telephoned to check we were OK when hurricane was forecast to reach Big Island. The condo was lovely, well equipped, plenty of beach parafanailier, board games, eski, large fridge. It was perfect for families with swimming pool and beach just across the road. Beautiful sunsets every night viewed from the balcony.The best snorkelling beach just a few minutes drive, or short walk away.
We enjoyed our time in this condo. It is close enough to the highway to make it easy to get to those great Kohala beaches like Waialea Bay, Hapuna and Mauna Kea and yet removed from the busy tourist spots in the charming little community of Puako. If you are an experienced snorkeler or diver you won't find a more interesting reef anywhere in the islands. You can explore the north end of the island ( Hawi, Waimea, Kawaihae etc. ) easily from here too. Close enough to the resorts for a nice restaurant dinner but so quiet and relaxing you'll enjoy staying at home and tossing something on the BBQ if you don't feel like going out. The washer / dryer and the A/C are a big plus. Great view of the ocean and the pool from your private lanai. We spent lots of time on the lanai - mornings with a cup of Kona coffee listening to the birds and the ocean and evenings watching the beautiful sunsets.
This was by far the cleanest, most well-stocked, best furnished rental we have ever had the pleasure of staying in (and we travel a lot). Mary was wonderful and you can tell she has thought of everything you may need during your stay. I loved how everything was helpfully labeled, and the guidebook was thorough. The condo has very comfortable beds and linens, and great furniture. The kitchen was amazingly stocked and everything was high quality. There was everything you need for a day at the beach including several coolers, chairs, and beach toys to play with. There is snorkel gear under the bed in the master bedroom.
The location is quiet and secluded- just what we were looking for. There is a good beach for swimming just a short walk away, and many other snorkeling spots down the road. Waialea Beach (Beach 69) is a quick drive away and may be one of the most beautiful, functional beaches we have ever been to. There is tons of shade under giant trees, AMAZING snorkeling, great swimming, and really anything you could ever want in a beach. The condo was so close to this beach that we ended up spending time there every day of our stay.
We like quieter, less-touristy towns when we travel, and Puako was perfect for us. We drove into Kona one day, which was an easy drive. There are not many restaurants very close by (but you can easily drive to Waimea or several other nearby towns), but the wonderful kitchen was perfect for cooking our own meals.
We travelled with our 10 year old son and the room he stayed in was perfect for him, they clearly thought of families when they designed it.
I highly recommend this condo!
Beach access is a short walk from the condo, across the street and down a couple houses. This is a great children's beach as the outer reef protects it from the wind and high surf. There are a few shade trees on the south end. Great spot to snorkel and to kayak. Kayaks can be rented nearby.

A non-refundable 1/4th rent is due upon booking, final balance is due 60 days prior to arrival/non-refundable at that time unless we can rebook the dates. We do not accept credit cards.
