Green Space: Jamaica Plain, often referred to in the 19th century as 'the Eden of America,' is one of the greenest neighborhoods in the city of Boston. The community contains or is bordered by a number of jewels of the Emerald Necklace park system designed in the 19th century by Frederick Law Olmsted: Olmsted Park, from Route 9 at the Riverway south to Perkins Street, including Leverett Pond, Willow Pond, and Ward's Pond... Jamaica Pond has 60 acres (240,000 m2) of surface area and is the largest and deepest body of fresh water in Boston... Arnold Arboretum is a 265-acre (1.1 km2) world-renowned plant collection maintained by Harvard University, and contains Peter's Hill, the highest elevation in Jamaica Plain at 235 feet (72 m)... Franklin Park is a 527-acre (2.1 km2) park (the largest in the city) and holds the Franklin Park Zoo (the largest zoo in New England), White Stadium and the William J. Devine Golf Course.

Public transportation: The Green Line 'E' Train streetcar service terminates at Heath Street and South Huntington Avenue. Bus service continues along South Huntington Avenue, Centre Street, and South Street to its terminus at the Forest Hills Station. The Orange Line rapid transit train line runs below street level through the middle of Jamaica Plain, with stops at Jackson Square, Stony Brook, Green Street, and Forest Hills. Buses connect Jamaica Plain with West Roxbury, Hyde Park, and suburban Dedham and Walpole to the south, and the rest of Boston by street routes. Forest Hills Station is a major transportation hub and is within walking distance of the Arnold Arboretum and Forest Hills Cemetery.

Accommodations: Arthouse 2 has two bedrooms, one larger than the other. The unit is best suited for one to four person occupancy but feel free to inquire about a couple extra. We're painting the whole unit so we'll be posting new photos soon - available September 1st, 2011 just in time for parents visiting their kids at college and leaf peeping season!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Six of us stayed here for a week in august (4 adults and 2 children , ages 8 and 4). We all felt at home imediately as the owners have thought of everything - lots of clean linens, well-equipped kitchen, even some toys and books for the kids. The house was clean and comfortable and we made use of the cute back yard as well.

For us, this was great value for money. If we had stayed in a hotel, we would have needed 2 rooms and the kids would not have the space to move around or go outside. Here, we could cook our own meals (great grocery stores nearby), enjoy a glass of wine in the back yard, go to the park across the road, or head to the T-station down the road (3 minutes away) to tour around Boston. Really the perfect set-up. We love Boston and will definitley contact Christine again to arrange a stay.

Off the Beaten Path

This property was clean, neat and had everything we needed. Everything was as listed & very comfortable. My husband injured his back shortly before we arrived & was on a cane so navigating the stairs & parking a little distance from the property made it a little more difficult than we had planned. On street parking was available but was sometimes a block or more away. As an over 55 y/o female, if I had been traveling alone I might have been a little worried about walking that far alone in the dark late at night. Christine was VERY easy to work with & I would rent this property again.

A nice place to stay

Excellent location. Just a short walk to the subway. Sam Adam's was just around the corner along with a lovely cafe - where the breakfast(s) was wonderful.

Nice, convenient place to stay

  • 4 of 5
We found the property to be just as listed and reviewed. Very convenient to Boston and surrounding areas via the subway - we never needed a car nor a taxi. It was very noisy to someone not used to the city but I used ear plugs at night and slept like a baby. The washer / dryer came in very handy, doing little loads daily to keep from taking home a huge pile of dirty laundry. It was a little scary walking from the subway after dark with no one else around but that only happened a couple of times during our seven night stay. Most times had plenty of other people around. Boston Brewery (darn near next door), the Milky way, Ula Café, Doyle's, and my favorite City Feed and Supply were all stops we made in Jamaica Plain. There is also a Whole Foods market a few blocks away. For the price I don't think you can beat this place.

Great to come home to!

  • 4 of 5
Lovely, clean home on a bustling intown street at the edge of a terrific neighborhood! Plenty of room for two parents and a college-bound student; steps away from both excellent coffee and award-winning pizza. Christine is a thoughtful and conscientious host. Very aware of energy footprint, which is laudable; only, I would wish for a bit more lighting at night. (Easy to arrange.) Stay here!

Great place!!!

  • 5 of 5
I stayed at the Art House with my wife and daughters and we were very happy with the stay. It was clean and comfortable. Christine, the home owner, made the entire process easy and was very responsive. The location was convenient with the T just a block away. There was a green space across the street and there were three playgrounds within walking distance! Also, there was a great cafe and bakery right around the corner. I would definitely stay here again and plan to do so on my next trip to Boston.

Very well kept, spacious apartment.

  • 5 of 5
This apartment is really super. We stayed there with our two boys (20 and 24) and there was lots of space. The place has many windows which provide ample light and everything was tidy and very clean. The kitchen had everything we were looking for and we appreciated the porch very much. Although we have to say that the grill really would need some cleaning. The neighbourhood felt safe and nice. We did not use the Metro but driving into downton Boston took us only about 10 minutes. The lock system at the doors gave us a great feeling of safety and the listing description and the pictures were definitely accurate. Christine reacted promptly to one of our enquiries and there was no problem in dealing with the money transfer.
We would highly recommend this place and will surely stay there again whenever we will come back to Boston.

In 1997, Jamaica Plain had the third highest percentage of tree cover of all Boston neighborhoods and the highest percentage in the Heart of the City. Jamaica Plain is nestled between tremendous open space resources, including Franklin Park, the Arnold Arboretum, the Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Pond, the Allandale Woods Urban Wild, and the Southwest Corridor Park, as well as numerous other smaller parks, tot-lots, and playgrounds. Jamaica Plain contains or is adjacent to more than 1,250 acres of open space.

Jamaica Plain is served by a rapid transit line that runs through the center of the neighborhood along the Southwest Corridor. The Orange Line that originates at the Forest Hills MBTA Station in southern Jamaica Plain includes three more stops in the neighborhood, and extends to downtown Boston and beyond.
