Comfort Found Literary Lodging was founded by the award winning author and illustrator Sharon Lovejoy and her husband Jeff Prostovich, a real estate broker in Maine and California.
Jeff Prostovich and Sharon Lovejoy purchased this apartment in 2006
The first time I saw downtown Damariscotta I felt as though I had come home. The small village of old sea captain’s houses, the perfect New England churches and steeples and mid 19th century brick buildings huddled near the river touched my heart.
One building in particular stayed in my mind. For decades, 112 Main Street was the apothecary shop for the town. Years later, the pharmacy was taken over by a country store (now a gallery) and the top two floors were turned into apartments.
When the chance came to buy the building, we wandered through the floors up to the top level. It felt like a Paris (don’t laugh) apartment. Maybe it was the 33 steps, but I loved the high ceiling in the stairwell, the moldings, the funky 30's kitchen, the living room, and the two bedrooms.
We had often talked about buying a small hotel to outfit with comfortable furniture and beds, antiques, art, and lots of wonderful books.
When Jeff asked me what we should call it, I thought of the book Comfort Found in Good Old Books by George Hamlin Fitch. Written in 1911 by the book reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle, Fitch’s book highlighted the most beloved of the books he turned to for comfort. He believed, as do I, that cultivating a love of reading is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Books bring the world to your easy chair; they give you wings; and they are ever faithful friends whether you need inspiration, edification, or consolation. Fitch believed in the verity of the old quote by Thomas Carlyle, “My books are friends that never fail me.”
When our first guests checked into Comfort Found, they said, 'This is a HOME,' which was exactly how we wanted them to feel. Jeff and I would like to invite you to experience the real taste of New England in the warm and welcoming rooms of our dear 'Comfort Found.' I think you'll feel, as did our first guests, that you've stepped into a well-loved home.
Thee is welcome here friend.

We had a wonderful stay here in our second time. Super cozy hide away. Thanks for a wonderful visit and thank you for your hospitality.
Very cozy and comfortable. Would highly recommend it.
great loft in downtown damariscotta. we enjoyed it's central location to everything and was great when we needed to get away from the crowds.plenty of reading material and close to nearby restaurants. we will keep this in mind for future trips
direct tv (basic) was a plus for news and weather
What a find! In town location, walk to shops, restaurants, harbor and country roads. The apartment is full of light, 2 good sized bedrooms with comfy beds. The eat in kitchen is charming and had everything you need. The living room has great view of the harbor and is filled with books and inviting and comfortable chairs to settle in for a great read. The owners have thought of every last detail. We will be back! You could also take the bus from Logan or Boston and be dropped off right across the street at the ode fashioned Soda Fountain. (Yummy chocolate frappes :-)
We couldn't have been more delighted with our stay at Literary Lodging - Comfort Found. Everything we needed was provided, including a wonderful array of books. The location made exploring Damariscotta as simple as walking out the front door. The views from the apartment are wondeful, we even watched the local High School Homecoming Parade.
Being familiar with Damariscotta I knew this rental’s location was excellent. What I didn’t anticipate was getting a terrible cold the day I checked in. I chose the quieter back bedroom and discovered the bed perfect to curl up in - great linens and deeply comfortable. I couldn’t wait to go to bed every night. I also didn’t anticipate locking myself out the next morning (my own fault) but it turned out to be a fun adventure as I met the downstairs tenant, the housecleaner, the downstairs shopkeepers, and assured Jeff when I was back in. This apartment is spacious, bright, exceptionally clean, beautifully furnished, and convenient to all the delightful stores and restaurants in Damariscotta. I hated to leave. Free parking is a little walk and there are stairs to the 3rd floor, so if you have difficulty getting around, maybe not the best place. Otherwise, perfect.
While planning a trip with my daughter to Damariscotta ME, even though we were visiting family in nearby Walpole, we decided we wanted a place of our own for the time we were there. We came across this lovely apartment and didn't hesitate to make the reservation. The location is right in downtown Damariscotta, near shops and restaurants and within easy drive to Boothbay Harbor and the Pemaquid Lighthouse. Since our primary reason for the visit was to visit family, we didn't stray too far from town, but did visit Boothbay Harbor and the lighthouse. We also enjoyed a fun river cruise down the Damariscotta River. Tuesdays are senior days with $5.00 off the regular $30.00 charge.
The apartment is lovingly furnished with quaint and very comfortable furniture - the beds were very comfortable. The apartment is on the top floor of a very old building and accessible by about 30 stairs - don't pack heavy and if you have any physical limitations, this is not the place for you.
There are two bedrooms (each w/a queen bed), one bathroom, living room and full kitchen. Everything was provided - linens, towels, dishes, utensils, pots, pans, etc. We even found calamine lotion in the bathroom cabinet :) Amenities in the bathroom included wonderful glycerin soap , shampoo and body lotion. There was also wi-fi and free local phone calls. There were books everywhere; however, with our short visit and running around, we didn't get to sit and read.
There is a large a/c in the kitchen and fans for the other rooms. We took advantage of the door in the kitchen off the fire escape and we kept that open when we were 'home'.
Free parking is provided in the bank parking lot behind the building. The front bedroom faces Main St. and with that comes the accompanying noises - cars traveling down the street and cars pulling into the gas station across the street. The gas station has one of those rubber hoses that 'dings' when you drive over it ;) The back bedroom is quieter - both rooms have ample closet space.
It is so evident that the owners, Jeff and Sharon, take great pride in their ownership of the apartment. Their attention to the smallest details was greatly appreciated.
The rental is available all year and whether you like the cold or the warmer months, you'd be comfortable and cozy in Comfort Found.
New and antiquarian book stores, centrally located in MidCoast Maine. Lots of antique and shopping within 30-45 minutes. Portland approx a hour away depending on traffic.
