A Great Stay!!!

  • 5 of 5
The house is located in a very nice peaceful community on a hill with spectacular views. We enjoyed the stunning sunsets at the end of a full day of activities. The house is very well organized and clean. We had no water or accommodation issues as mentioned in one review. We were 4 adults and 4 kids and pleased with the open first floor plan. There is also a very nice and large private lanai on the second floor where the adults relaxed after dinner. The house is as the photo's indicate. The beach image is an example of several with in a short car ride.

We liked the location of the house. It's situated with several Kona coffee farmers near by. The kids enjoyed a tour of a farm learning about the lengthy process and tasting. We were there in July and had great swimming conditions. We tried several beaches from the pebble beach down the hill to Old Airport State Park just north of Kailua-Kona.

Attractions are an easy drive from this house. A visit to the Kona Volcanoes National Park is highly recommended! A stop by Shaka Restaurant in Naalehu on the way is a must. We rented kayaks from Kona Boys (approx. 15 minutes away) who were great and Kayaked to the Captain Cook Memorial. My family and I tried surfing another day which was an adventure I'm glad we did not miss.

I recommend setting a menu for each day and stock up at the start of your stay. There is a Choicemart grocery store on the way to the house. We drove to town one night to walk around and had a great dinner at Kona Brewery. Enjoyed a luau another night at the Marriot which was structured and possibly too organized. Would look for a smaller more casual luau on our next visit.

It was a long flight there from NJ but well worth the travel. We left very satisfied with our decision to stay at this house instead of a resort or hotel in town. It was a good value and would not hesitate to go back again.

Deceptive Listing, Not in Captain Cook, Various problems

  • 2 of 5
First, this house is NOT in Captain Cook: the VRBO ad "Location: Captain Cook" is badly deceptive. It's 30 minutes or so South of town, in an odd strip of homes south of Kapilo Bay. There is no sandy beach within 15 minutes drive, there is no coffee shop or restaurant or store of any sort, or any of what one would want to be in Captain Cook to enjoy, anywhere nearby. The listing photo of a nice white-sand beach is also deceptive.

We stayed the three nights we'd booked as we had little choice. Beyond the not-so-good location (definitely not "FABULOUS" as the headline says), the house is a mixed bag.

The climb. There is absolutely no way a front-wheel drive vehicle can go up the driveway. They warn you about this, but It's about 50 steep vertical feet from the street to the front door.

The water: Water is brought in to each house by tanker truck. On our second morning there was no water. No taps, no toilets. The manager, Sharon, is very sweet and knows how to re-prime the pump, is located over an hour away. It turns out that the pump was just having a bad day, and it turned itself back on after about 90 minutes, so we got our showers.

The water from the tank doesn't taste very good. There's a filters by the sink and fridge didn't work. Also, Sharon left us a note on our arrival that the TV had gotten de-programmed they'd fix it soon. We're not TV people so it didn't matter to us, but I could imagine that bothering some people.

The master bedroom is very nice, but the only closet is locked. There is nowhere to hang anything up.

There are lots of high-end features. The cabinets are beautiful, as are the upstairs wood floors. The Lanai off the Master is very nice. The place is very spacious. The granite in the bathrooms is nice. There's a great washer & dryer. There are tons of ocean views. The beds and couches are comfy.

But our main disappointment (other than location!) in the house is hard to be specific about: despite having nice features, the home didn't have a nice feeling to it -- it just didn't feel homey. It's as if they put in place the furniture and features, but left out any hint of love. The house has an un-lived-in feeling to it. Kitchen cabinets have an odd assortment of junk in them. I'd go on but I'm out of space :-). It's not a place we'd stay again, though for a large family with good climbing legs who aren't looking for town or beach nearby and don't drink water, it could be a good choice.

Our Whole Family Fit Here

  • 5 of 5
When you have a large family like we do, we have always found it difficult to find a house that will acommodate our entire lot. Which is nine by the way. When we stayed here it was very comfortable and the price was right! It's very spacious, with UNBELIEVABLE ocean views. You can sit on the lanai and view the humpback whales! The skindiving was fun down at Pebble Beach. And if the surf came up we went up to the sand beach at Ho'okena There are so many beautiful beaches on the Big Island. The Big Island Revealed Book was at the house which we found incredibly helpful on our outings. The driveway was a bit steep, would recommend 4x4, or park at the bottom as we did and walk on up. Believe me it's well worth It!!
