Thoroughly enjoyed the Macguire (sp?) house. I am a minimalist when it comes to decorating but all the family's touches (especially the shell identification boards) were appreciated. We had fun reading the book describing the things displayed on the walls and the table created from dive finds. Large wonderful yard! Shower was great!
Had a great time. The house was clean and well equipped. Love the two floor layout. With the bedrooms all downstairs and the rest of the living area upstairs made it easy to get up before everyone else and not have to worry about waking them up while making coffee.
The nights were quite and the days cool. It was great to be in cooler weather, even if it was for only three days.
We have been coming here for years and love this house, the property and the area. Recently the owners have made a number of upgrades and improvements, including full garbage and recycling service, and the place has never looked better. As another reviewer noted, this house is truly a home, with comfy furniture, well-equipped kitchen, and a million dollar view. The decor is not some faux, Coastal Living wannabe, but the real deal with spearfishing/diving pictures and trophies (yes, that gigantic lobster on the wall is real!), and bronze artifacts collected by the owners from a wreck off the California coast. There is even a picture album that shows how the artifacts were collected...fascinating! Take a close look around the living room and you will see some of those artifacts have been reincarnated as useful furnishings.
The house is not directly on the cliff, but the view from upstairs looks right over the adjoining property down upon the ocean and scenic cove below. You can hear the ocean at night; you are that close. Even though you can watch the sun set from the patio, we walked out to the end of the bluff every night to enjoy the sunset. (And it was the only place our cell phones worked.) Divers and fishermen will appreciate the fish/abalone cleaning station outside.
The property is big with lots of room for the kids (small and big) to play. There is plenty of firewood stacked up next to the fire pit, and we loved building a fire, roasting marshmallows, and watching the sky absolutely fill with stars.
The house is in a very convenient location, close to the wonderful town of Gualala and also within walking distance to a beautiful beach just 1 mile north. Sight-seeing in the area is world class with numerous hikes, beach towns, beaches, museums, lighthouse at Point Arena, historic Fort Ross, and much more. In fact, the NY Times has listed the area as one of the top places to visit in 2014. Thanks NY Times, but that's not news to us!
We had wi-fi here (not very fast), but really preferred to "unplug" and get into the serenity and beauty of the place. The layout of the house is terrific, with the two bedrooms downstairs and living area/kitchen upstairs to take advantage of the magnificent view.
We have stayed here for a whole month. This home is truly a home. You can tell the owners use it themselves by all the available amenities. Plenty of paper goods, excellent cookware ("All-Clad" stainless), spices, a fire extinguisher. I noticed 4 different vacuum cleaners, all kinds of cleaning products, detergent for the washing machine, tons of towels, etc., personal photographs and lots of diving trophies including a mounted trophy lobster, a huge mounted Ling Cod, a monstrous Baracuda head and an old iron anchor recovered from a wreck! See my photos. Two downstairs bedrooms and a bathroom that has 2 rooms, one just for the shower/bath, but not just any bathtub but a gigantic jacuzi that could fit two snugly. We only wish it had a safety grab bar as we had several close calls :( Lots of marine photos and paintings abound. We have never seen a rental equiped so well and lovingly, nor as comfortable. Books to read, a huge collection of almost 50 VHS films, lantern flashlights, night lights for every room, several free standing electric heaters, electric heated matress pads and a large and beautiful electric fireplace that put out wonderful heat into the livingroom with style. Both the electric stove and oven work well as does the Weber BBQ on the upper deck. We would have spent a lot more time on this upper deck if it had been covered. There is even a fish cleaning station with running water outside the house.
Although not on the water, two sides of the house have an ocean view (about 200 feet from the, water), the north west window sees great sunsets. Only a one mile drive to get downtown! Our cell phones have no reception at the house but do when in downtown Gualala. The gracious owners have provided a land line with free long distance calls in the U.S.! One of the phones with an answering machine is in the kitchen and the other is in the master bedroom. The only things that I can think of to improve this home would be a cover over the upper deck. It gets too hot to sit for any length of time; even a large umbrella would help. The master bedroom has a small flatscreen TV and it would be nice if there were a larger flatscreen TV in the livingroom to replace the 26" tube TV. We have fallen in love with the little town of Gualala. The people are friendly. There are two very nice supermarkets, nice restaurants,a farmer's market on Saturdays, gift shops, a bookstore, a medical clinic, a well stocked pharmacy, two gas stations it's a quality 5star place!
The house is clean and well-equipped, though it is somewhat “stuck in the last century” – no WiFi, phone only with a landline, TV in the living room is a tube. But given the very nice two floor layout with windows and furniture combined perfectly, and a spacious yard it all creates a specific charm of being away from the world and forcing you to relax and rest. We have enjoyed it greatly and would come back.
I loved this property - good layout (two full bedrooms) and futon upstairs for the kids. I downgraded this review to 4 stars from 5 for 2 reasons - the kitchen counters were dusty and there were dead ants on the counter (I know there have been ant problems, but for a cleaning fee I think those should have been addressed). The other reason is the necessity bringing out the garbage - I understand putting it all together, but having to bring it with us in the car? When you already have 6 people in the car? I think that again for a cleaning fee, plus the normal rental fee, garbage service should be included.
