Casco Viejo (Casco Antiguo) or San Felipe, is the oldest city in Central America and at the heart and soul of Panamanian architecture. Its picturesque buildings, red brick cobblestone streets, and age-old religious landmarks were honored in 1997 when UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.
The diverse sense of culture and history could be represented no place better. Take a leisurely walk where the colonial architecture, friendly people and ocean breezes are reminiscent of a step back in time. Plus, the restaurants and Cafe's in Casco Viejo are second to none in Panama City.
Casco Viejo is only minutes from the center of Panama City by Taxi even though you’ll have no desire to leave.

The choice to buy a property in Panama was an easy one. Panama City provides for a personal desire to have both the "old world" mixed in with a modern day city. Casco Viejo is a beautiful sanctuary just across the bay from the more modern metropolis of Panama City. The area near Plaza Bolivar is full of historical beauty and cultural tastes of Panama. Panama in general is a stable country with a great future ahead of it. With all the amazing beaches and beautiful mountains so close, you can enjoy all the beauty the world has to offer in this small country.
The Tribe Building is located one block from the Presidential Palace, historical buildings, National Theatre and Church in one of the safest areas of Panama. Casco Viejo is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a beautiful day and pleasant evening. Spending days and nights in this historical neighborhood is beautiful. With the center of the Panama City just minutes away, you have the best of the old world and the new. It's great.
I had never been to Panama before this trip, but my boyfriend and I went down and had a really great time. We went all over Panama seeing different areas and surfing. One of the highlights was staying in Casco Viejo at the Tribe Building. The apartment is large and spacious with a great balcony and big kitchen and dining area. We enjoyed cooking at the
apartment as well as going out to the great restaurants in Plaza Bolivar. This is a great place to be in Panama City, we really loved it. Thank you very much Rick and Cristina.
Just stayed there over Thanksgiving, and my suggestion is to stay here now before Casco Viejo becomes a higher budgeted trip. Outside of the chaos of Panama City, the Casco is the home of great restaurants, history, and nightlife all within walking distance.
Also, since Tribe Apartments are located right next to the Presidential Palace, I never felt unsafe walking around at night, as the area is heavily guarded.
Since it is also affordable, if we wanted to stay in other places in the country we didn't feel awful about paying for dual nights if we journeyed to San Blas. Everything is basically a $5-$10 cab ride away if you want to hit the city nightlife or Panama Viejo, or other sites.
The owners are great and accessible, and if we had any questions they were an e-mail away. I would definitely recommend staying here over other more expensive hotels, plus since it is a residence, having a kitchen was key for the latenight returns, and watching American Football on Thanksgiving Day.
My husband and I recently stayed in this apartment in the Tribe Building for a long weekend in Panama City -- our first ever. We wanted to stay in Casco Viejo because we had heard that is where a lot of attractions, restaurants, nightlife and shopping are. We loved this apartment and will definitely stay here on future trips.
First of all, the owner was extremely helpful and prompt in answering questions and providing information. We had a very late arrival to the airpot and he even arranged transportation to pick us up and take us to the property (for a nominal fee), which was great because all the one-way streets in Casco Viejo make it difficult for newcomers to navigate by car. And actually the $30 or so fee was less expensive than the taxi we took on the way back to the airport.
Secondly, the location is fantastic -- right in the heart of Casco Viejo, near the Palacio Presidencial, Teatro Nacional and tons of restaurants and shops. It is also very safe and quiet, and has a great balcony with a view of the water and Panama City skyline. From the apartment, all of Casco Viejo is very walkable and if one wants to venture downtown, the Amador Causeway, Panama Canal or other locations, it's very easy and affordable to take a taxi.
Thirdly, the apartment itself is true to the photos. It is very spacious, clean and well-maintained and has all the amenities one might need: wireless internet (included in the rental price), mobile phone, air conditioning, washer/dryer, stove and full kitchen. All linens and towels are provided as well.
Finally, the building has character. It's not as fancy as some of the downtown hotels, but if you're looking for an old-city feel yet the comforts of a moderately priced, modern hotel (i.e. not a hostel but not a super-pricey luxury hotel), the Tribe Building is perfect. Our thought was, why travel abroad to stay somewhere that feels like Miami? We wanted to feel like we were in Latin America and experience a little bit of culture and history.
