Villa Reyes at Playa Las Tortugas. An upscale tropical paradise at the secluded “Turtle Beach” on Mexico’s Pacific shore. Entrée Magazine summed up the picturesque setting: ..... “ a gorgeous, coconut-producing plantation, an 1100-acre estuary teeming with exotic birds and a turtle camp protecting the endangered olive ridleys ..“ The area also enjoys perfect 'Puerto Vallarta weather' ... 80's in Dec, Jan, Feb. There are usually 300 sunny days per year.
Villa Reyes beckons you to the travel experience of a lifetime in its spacious 1,750+ sq. ft. interior ... with ocean views and the sounds of waves from the bedrooms, kitchen, living room, dining room and from the 1,200 sq. ft. of decking. The pristine beach is just a leisurely 3 minute stroll through colorful tropical flowers, foliage, and coconut palms. Only yards up the beach is the mangrove estuary where you can kayak and watch 125 species of exotic birds, including the resident pelicans and roseate spoonbills.
Canoe or swim across the estuary for lunch at one of Platanitos’ six sand floored, oceanfront restaurants. Enjoy a walk or a barefooted run on 5 miles of uninhabited sand beach that is lined with palm trees and goes on as far as the eye can see. The ocean waves are great for boogie boards, surfers, and ocean kayaks. The community pool is also just steps from Villa Reyes and is a favorite of our guests. Volunteering to help the Turtle Camp research facility preserve the endangered sea turtle population is another popular family activity. Even small children can participate in the release of hatchlings - sometimes as many as 1,000 in one evening.
Villa Reyes was purchased in September, 2011, by the current owners who have updated many of the amenities to insure the comfort of guests. Villa Reyes is now one of only two Tortugas rentals that offer air conditioning in all rooms – a special benefit when the mid-day temperatures heat up. A clothes washer and dryer are located in the Villa and the staff will gladly do your laundry every 3rd day. The kitchen is equipped with full size appliances and bottled water is supplied. Bath and bedroom linens are provided.
The Villa has 2 king size beds. Both spacious bedrooms have full baths, including large tiled showers. Each bedroom opens to a covered lanai. The large closets are adequate for a long term stay. (A hairdryer and iPod dock are provided.) A sofa bed, air mattresses are also available. Our new roof-top day bed has custom insect screening and perfect ocean/pool views. This bed can provide 'starry, starry nights' for the adventuresome.
A 'pack and play' and highchair are available. Close parental supervision is needed for children on the rooftop deck, near stairs, and in the water. Childcare can be arranged by the Property Manager.
There is daily maid and garden service to insure your Villa and the grounds are in top condition for your enjoyment.
The dining room table seats eight. The dining room area also includes a computer desk and sofa which are well positioned to retain the ocean views while you relax to use the free WiFi or just read a book from our selection of novels.
There are two additional dining areas – one on the second floor balcony and one on the rooftop. (For those of you who would like to leave the cooking to us, we can arrange affordable/authentic Mexican meals prepared in your Villa by our wonderful cooks. Sample menus are available at www.villa-reyes.com.)
The den with flat screen TV/DVD player for free NETFLIX movies adjoins the kitchen and provides great ocean views/sounds. CD’s, DVD’s, books, board games and playing cards are provided. Colorful Mexican tiles and tasteful accent pottery will add to your enjoyment.
To reach Playa Las Tortugas, guests will travel 70 miles north from the Puerto Vallarta airport. Good roads will take you by mountain passages, small villages, roadside fruit stands, and the scenes become progressively more rural in the heart of the Riviera Nayarit. By the time you turn west toward the ocean, you will see major farming which produces tons of pineapples, large herds of cattle, and huge mango orchards. Arrival at Playa Las Tortugas before sunset is recommended.
This area from Puerta Vallarta to Playa Las Tortugas has a great reputation for traveler safety and cordial citizenry.
Thomas Dale and Associates ( a leading international security firm whose clients include CNN, Walt Disney Co, NBC Universal, and Cisco Systems), recently conducted a study and declared Puerto Vallarto and the Riviera Nayarit among the safest tourist destinations in the world. (Where is Nayarit? The state is just north of Puerto Vallarta and features 200 miles of Pacific Coastline known as 'Riviera Nayarit'.Other coastal towns in Nayarit include San Blas, La Penita, Los Pancho, Sayulita and Bucerias.)
The weather in Riviera Nayarit is widely recognized as some of the best on the Planet. Average year-round temperatures range from highs of 80 to 85 degrees to lows of 60 to 70 degrees. Most rain occurs from July through September and even then, most rain occurs at night or during pre-dawn thundershowers. Much of the year is characterized by deep blue skies and ocean breezes.
There are multiple options for transport from the airport. Many guests choose to rent a car from companies like Gecko Car Rentals (they pick up and return you to the airport/they include insurance in the rental price). Some guests use bus/taxi transportation. We also offer a private shuttle that will stop for grocery shopping in Puerto Vallarta, when requested.
A Washington Post reporter called Playa Las Tortugas his 'Shangri-La, the place I could recommend without reservation or caveat.” Our secluded beach community will indeed take you back to the 'old Mexico'. The well appointed Villa Reyes will provide comfort/ serenity and memories to last a lifetime. Our rates for 2014 have been reduced due to global economics. Enjoy now!

My wife and I are 'seniors' who traveled the world before finding our paradise on this five miles of secluded beach in rural Mexico. I was a Navy pilot and am a retired attorney from South Carolina. Currently, we divide our time between South Carolina, Florida, and Mexico. We love being immersed in nature and fully support the conservation of Mexico's abundant turtle population. We are adventure seekers and we love the stimulating environment which we have found in rural 'old Mexico'. We always feel safe in the State of Nayarit, Mexico and the people are especially friendly ... they are tolerate of and amused by our dreadful lack of fluency in the Spanish language.
Robert Ken King purchased this villa in 2011
Playa Las Tortugas is the most pristine natural environment that we have found in 50 years of extensive travel. We have a five mile beach that is virtually uninhabited. A fresh water estuary provides miles of mangrove lined waterfront that is ripe for exploration by kayak. At times, the butterflies add a further colorful dimension. The weather is phenomenal. The closest restaurants are 20 minutes away by kayak and a little longer if you drive. They have sand floors and the fresh red snapper is cooked on open charcoal grills. Our home is located in a grove of coconut palms and tropical flowers which line the beach access. A large and refreshing community pool (lighted) is only steps from our Villa. In combination, these natural attributes spell 'PARADISE'. For visitors, these amenities will provide the most memorable vacation of their life.
The culture in rural areas of Mexico has remained true to tradition. Many aspects of life are slow and akin to 'yesterday'. Often, farmers on horseback are contrasted with huge tractors that foreshadow the changes that are in progress. However, when the sun retreats at day's end, virtually all of the town's people come out to socialize with their neighbors on streetsides and town squares. Nearby, vendors push carts laden with diverse food and beverages. Tiny 'mom & pop' stores sell vegetables and necessities from sidewalk displays. All in all, visitors can still experience the cultural warmth of old Mexican when visiting this area of Riviera Nayarit.
We had such an amazing time here! Just what we needed - a holiday in the sun. The house is amazing; we have never felt more comfortable staying in someone else's home. The beach is absolutely wonderful, it's so great to get some privacy! We spent many days enjoying the surf and the sun, along with many of the countless activities that Playa Las Tortugas has to offer. This was such a unique experience and we loved every second of it. The staff was wonderful and helpful, and they helped make sure that our stay was fun and rejuvinating. Thank you for opening your home to us! (Reproduced verbatim from the Villa's guest book by the new owners of Villa Reyes.)
We traveled to Puerto Vallarta with our two kids (9 and 6 year old girls) for Spring Break March 2014. We rented a car at Gecko Car Rental kindly recommended by Villa Reyes owner – would also recommend them. A quick stop on at the Mega at Bucarius and then on to the interesting road to PLT!
The PLT location has a good beginner/intermediate beach/river mouth surf break, I surfed a few times every day with a decent 9 foot Mexican long board! Superb for me and the kids also joined in with bogey boarding and relatively safe beach compared to other places I have been in Mexico. Of course, there were no crowds, just a few locals and some other PLT vacationers.
The house was great, clean an fully equipped with everything needed. The TV area couches could be more comfortable, but the WiFi bandwidth was excellent - Netflix a real bonus for evening relaxing in front of the box. The PLT caretakers - Gabriel and Pascual - were really helpful and always present for any questions or guidance. We did the Kayak trip up the river estuary to the mud flats, saw a croc on the way among many cool looking birds, kids loved that!
We stayed at PLT over 7 nights so did two trips to Sayulita which was great breaking the trip up a bit. We also went over to the nearby village of Plantanitos.
The PLT pool was well kept and close to Villa Reyes, one or two evenings the bugs became an issue so bring some repellent just in case. We also used the meal service provided which was good value, providing fresh breakfast and lunch/evening meals at a good price.
Overall we had an excellent time here and would recommend it to those looking for something more peaceful with a bit of Surf. Rent a car/jeep if you want to be mobile – the place is remote.
Everything about Villa Reyes was fabulous! The owner's description of the house and property were exactly as we found. Every day was swimming in the ocean, kayaking in the estuary, and relaxing on the daybed on the rooftop palapa. In addition the staff was very accommodating and helpful and you cannot beat the dinners we had cooked for us! We are going back!
We are just back home from our incredible stay at Playa Las Tortugas, feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of winter. This was a wonderful place to appreciate the very best of Mexican scenery and hospitality while enjoying a beautiful villa in a coconut plantation 2.5 hours north of Puerta Vallarta.
Playa Las Tortugas is a 5 mile beach where you can wander for hours enjoying the pelicans, snowy egrets, frigate birds and, eagles fishing at the shoreline; and most often without ever seeing another human. In addition, we were allowed to participate in the release of newly hatched turtles (hence the name Tortugas) from the two turtle conservation centers on the beach.
The resort is an assortment of beautiful villas situated at the north end of the plantation. Built at the turn of the century the houses are luxurious and provide more than just the comforts of home. All of the paraphernalia necessary for a fun filled holiday is made available by the owners (beach gear, barbecues, blenders, juicers, chaise lounges and “day beds” on the roof!). For those wishing a more inclusive holiday, staff is on hand daily to provide scrumptious Mexican meals. A beautiful pool provides the center piece for the resort and welcome respite in the heat of the day. Fun in the surf is as close as crossing the beach and diving in; something that quickly became a daily routine for the entire family from grandparents to the little ones.
The many villages and towns in the area were a treat to visit and are sure to restore the faith of the many skeptics who believe that the real Mexico has been lost to the dangers and sprawl of the big tourist centers. Fifteen minutes from the villa is the quaint village of Plantanitos. You get there by walking north on the beach, swimming across a narrow estuary and then climbing over a small hill to arrive at some of the best seafood in the area. It is perfect for an adventurous lunch. The city of San Blas is less than an hour north by car along a great coastal highway and includes, amongst many other attractions, a tour of the everglades where you are definitely going to see wildlife, including many a crocodillo. An evening in the town centre of Zaqualpan was the perfect place to enjoy a local hamburguesa for dinner and shopping for tomales and churros. Finally Thursday is market day in the town of La Panita. Everywhere we travelled we enjoyed the warmth and friendliness of the Mexican people. We can't say enough about PLT.
We stayed here for Christmas week, 2011; my two sisters and our mother, together with our families. Our group ranged from 16 to 84 and we came together from all over the map: Brooklyn, Seattle, Albuquerque and Sacramento. It was just a perfect place for us all to gather. There were 12 in our group so we used Villa Reyes and another house at Playa las Tortugas.
The house was everything pictured and beautifully equipped. PLT is a hidden treasure, the grounds are beautifully maintained, and the staff extraordinarily helpful. We were so happy to be out of the hustle of the large resort scene but wanted for nothing.
We tended to start our days at Villa Reyes with coffee, breakfast and yoga on the palapa with nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law straggling in as they awoke (even Mom made it over!), before transitioning onto our activities for the day and to the other house for lunch and dinner. In varying combinations, we took full advantage of what was offered... surf and boogie boarding, kayaking and using the stand up paddle board (on both the estuary and the sea), walking (and wading) over to Platanitas for lunch, horse back riding on beach at sunset (now that will be a memory for a lifetime!) and, of course, sharing in three releases of turtle hatchlings. "Off campus" we enjoyed the bird-watching jungle cruise near San Blas (perfect with our mother) and a day trip to Sayulita (perfect for the teens and 20 somethings...). We also took advantage of the meal preparation and enjoyed delicious dinners almost every evening.
It was a just a great place for a family vacation!
We were lucky to have scheduled our vacation at Villa Reyes shortly after the new owners had refurbished it and changed the name from Villa Michelle. The features described in the listing were "spot on". Our children liked having the pool, the beach, and the estuary all located within a short walk from our central location.
The whole family was excited to take the kayaks to explore the estuary. We even kayaked across the estuary to have lunch twice at the authentic sand-floored restaurants at Platanitos. The fish and shrimp are delivered daily from local fishing boats.
The tropical grounds and sunset ocean views from Villa Reyes were great for photography. My husband enjoyed early morning exercise on the miles of serene beach. All in all, this was a fantastic place to relax and unwind on the beach.
Our housekeeper was so helpful and she made sure our needs were attended to. We also decided to have some meals prepared by the Tortugas staff & found the veggies, local seafood, and desserts to be especially good. The Property Manager arranged for horseback riding on the beach and a jungle river ride. Next time, we want to return in Jan. or Feb. for the El Bajo whale watching boat trip.
We took a fantastic day trip for shopping in Puerto Vallarta and stopped to tour a Tequila Distillery (with samples!). We heartedly recommend the half day trip to the "Thursday Morning Market" in La Penita - exotic fruits/vegetables and crafts (pottery, silver, wool rugs). We also enjoyed watching as people in the nearby village of Zacualpan socialized on the sidewalks at sunset and we bought some of our supplies at their small stores.
We will come back to this paradise because our family can enjoy a variety of adventures together - including the last 7 miles of dirt road into Tortugas which took us back to an authentic Mexico. (With Skype and WiFi we were also able to maintain contact with our extended family in the U.S.) We even have plans to invite my husband's parents to join us at Tortugas next time.
Volunteer to help release turtle hatchlings & participate in turtle conservation, migratory bird watching via canoe or kayak, massage therapy, photography, experiencing rural Mexican culture/cuisine, surf fishing, deep sea fishing and whale watching in season. Golfing opportunities available at Tepic, Punta Mita, Litibu, and Puerta Vallarta (each facility is about 1.5 hours from Tortugas). Jungle adventures and waterfall excursions can be arranged from Playa Las Tortugas. Deep sea & surf fishing opportunities. Aquatic opportunities abound. Horseback riding on the beach for all ages & skills (inexpensive). The natural (eco-friendly) setting of Villa Reyes makes it a great destination for all age groups and the privacy is perfect for romantic occasions. The setting is also perfect for family reunions and yoga groups. For much greater detail, see our Website: www.villa-reyes.com and 'like' us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/
