My name is Russ Gates. I'm the proud owner of this lovely property. I'd love to share it with you. I'm 65, semi retired and have been in the office products industry for 40 years. I'm a devout Episcopalian. I grew up in Kansas City and moved to Colorado in 1976. I love the out of doors and this home provides me with so many outside activities.
Russ Gates purchased this house in 2008
This is a cozy, newly remodeled home, close to a variety of activities. Many of my guests tell me they most enjoyed spending time on the 1500 square foot bi- level deck. Grilling, enjoying the spectacular scenery and the lovely sounding creek.
Secluded. Quiet. Tranquil. Yet close to a variety of activities.
We had a fabulous time in Colorado. Your house was wonderful. We have used VRBO many times for rentals all over the place, but yours was the best stocked of any place we have ever been. It was really nice to actually have enough silverware and dishes for 9 people and plenty of pats and pans to choose from. The bottle of wine upon our arrival was really a nice treat after a long day of driving and so very thoughtful. Thank you for everything.
My fiance and I brought both of our families to this house over the holidays. A total of 11 of us! We loved waking up to snow-covered pine trees. We cooked a lot in the spacious kitchen and were all able to fit for family meals around the dining room table. If there is heavy snow, having a 4-wheel drive is important as the house is 3 miles up a side road. We went skiing at Loveland Ski Resort one day, which was about 25 min away. Russ was very available for questions both before our departure and while we were there. He made us feel welcome and as though it was our home for the days we were there. We would highly recommend going here and will return ourselves.
Beautiful setting, enjoyed the scenery, close to I 70 and ski areas. Stayed over Thanksgiving, had everything we needed (cooking utensils, pots and pans) to fix our Thanksgiving meal and other meals. We had a group of group of 7 adults and 2 children. Plenty of room for everyone. The owner was fantastic, made sure we knew where things were and left his contact information if case we needed to contact him. It was a pleasure to work with him. Prior to arriving if we had any questions he would respond quickly to our questions. The home was clean and well maintained. If the opportunity presents itself we would like to go back. Thanks for your hospitality!
We met friends traveling from different locations and had plenty of room for everyone to sleep and shower, etc. There was plenty of hot water for ten people to shower in the mornings and he has a fabulous coffee pot in the house as well. The owner even left us a bottle of wine to enjoy when we arrived.
We loved how far this is away from the rush of daily life, and loved having a little bit of property for the kids to hike on, and they even enjoyed playing in the stream during the warm parts of the days. We enjoyed the kitchen which had everything you need to make full meals and serve to a large group.
Also the property is very close to the phoenix gold mine, which offers a fantastic tour and opportunities to pan for gold (and actually find it!). We also spent a day climbing up to nearby St. Mary's glacier, which was a full day of fun for only $5 parking. We had no trouble getting to and from Denver from here to see some interesting things in the city. At the end of long days, we came back to the house and made big meals and just enjoyed each others company. We cooked most of our meals while staying at the house and saved a ton of money to do fun activities. The town of Idaho Springs has a good grocery and liquor store, not far from the house as well, so plenty of convenience to get what you need.
For travelers coming here, be sure to coordinate with the owner about making a fire on the property before you come - we always thought about it after it was kind of late, but didn't. We should have planned that better, so we missed out on the fires due to our lack of planning that out.
If I had one recommendation for the owner to make this an absolutely perfect getaway, I'd say - add a hot tub on that awesome back porch. That's the only reason for the 4-star rating. With a hot tub, we'd never leave!
We're already planning to meet up again at the same property next year.
Beautiful location with easy access to Idaho Springs and Georgetown. We had a group of 5 adults with 3 boys ages 9, 5 and 3. Everyone had a great time and there was plenty of space to hang out, prepare meals, watch movies, and relax in the wooded mountains. The house is very clean and well maintained. The owner Russ was responsive through the entire process and left us a nice bottle of wine. Highly recommended; we'll be back!
We visited Idaho Springs and area for a week. The whole family so we used all the space plus the mats for the floor. We had a great time in this home away from home. The large kitchen table was a plus as was the basement bunk bed area for seperate sleeping and extra tv. Kitchen equipped well. Loved the wrap around porch. If there were a couple of suggestions: as another viewer pointed out the queen bed is hard and there is only 1 ceiling fan in the dining room. I would suggest ceiling fans in bedrooms and have screens on windows in the bedrooms and sliding glass doors to allow more airflow and not have to worry about bugs. It did get warm in the bedrooms at night and we were not comfortable opening the windows without screens. Eventually we did as it was too warm to get a good night sleep. There are screens on the windows in the dining area which helps in that part of the house. There is no air conditioner but no need for one as it does remain fairly cool up in the mountain. All in all we had a good time and staying in a home away from home is the way I prefer it. Well kept home. Thank you Russ
My family had a good time at Russ's home. We had six adults and three children (2 that were 1 year and under). We appreciated the big kitchen and nice dining room plus the family room was very adequate. Beautiful scenery! Nice place to get away. Thanks, Russ
