Photos and Description of the Burgess vacation cottage rental
5 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, 4 fireplaces, 45' screened porch, sleeps 11

Poynton Lodge sits on 7 secluded acres near Smith Point (at the mouth of the Potomac River on Chesapeake Bay). Built in the 1930's by noted Virginia author James Branch Cabell, this five bedroom waterfront cottage was beautifully renovated in 2008. The cottage was designed to embrace the sights and sounds of the Bay. Wake to the putt-putt of a waterman's boat, heading to the crab pots. Enjoy your morning coffee on the front deck. Serve breakfast al fresco at the picnic table on the 45' long screened porch. Settle into an Adirondack chair to savor a good book. Take a picnic lunch down to beach. Kayak down to the bird sanctuary. Shower in the outdoor shower. Try your hand at bocce or croquet. Toast the sunset at the water's edge. Dine on the long porch or, if the temperature has dropped, in front of a fire in the dining room. Roast marshmallows over a bonfire on the beach. Retire to your comfortable bed, drop off to the sound of lapping water.

Amusements: We have a collection of beautiful jigsaw puzzles and classic board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Clue and Risk), Yahtzee, Connect Four, and Battleship, Dominoes and Mexican Train, Set, poker chips, and enough decks of cards to play a giant game of Hearts.

We have Bocce and Croquet Sets, and a net that could be used for volleyball of badmitten, and enough space to have all three games going on simultaneously.

We have a paddle boat that seats four, two 14'single kayaks, and a large double sit-upon kayak you are welcome to use. We have life vests for four adults, but please supply life jackets for your young guests.

Dogs: Well-mannered dogs are welcome guests. (Due to owner allergies, we cannot accommodate cats.) We have a moveable pen, dog dishes, and various covers for furniture for your use. Our dog Simon likes to keep watch from the upstairs daybed. Our property is secluded but not fenced so dogs that tend to wander should be supervised. Guests are encouraged to treat their dogs with tick, flea and heartworm preventive before visiting. There is a security deposit of $100 per dog.

Local Attractions: Tour local vineyards. Discover the history of the 19th century fishing industry at the Fishermen's Museum in nearby Reedville and enjoy the charming Victorian mansions built by local sea captains on Main Street. Go antiquing in nearby Kilmarnock. Step back in time with a boat trip to Tangier or Smith Island, or join one of the local captains for an exciting day of fishing. Visit an 18th century architectural treasure, historic Christ Church designed by Chistopher Wren. Take a hike in Hughlett's Point Nature and visit Shiloh Schoolhouse.

About Phoebe Mix

When we bought Poynton Lodge as a weekend house, it was a funky summer cottage with a killer view and minimal amenities. We drove down from Washington DC most weekends from April to November. Renovation (in 2007) and retirement (2012) have made it possible for us to spend much more time at Poynton Lodge.

Phoebe Mix purchased this cottage in 1985
Why Phoebe Mix chose Burgess

'Just one look, that's all it took.' From the first glimpse of the water as we walked around the house, we were hooked.

What makes this cottage unique

Opening all the windows to sounds of the waves lapping on the shore. Sitting with a cup of coffee on the front porch watching the sun rise. Following a pod of dolphins as they work their way up the river. Tracking soaring eagles as they wheel overhead. Paddling a kayak out to the fish traps. Settling into an Adirondack chair with a good book.

The Northern Neck is a hidden treasure on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, with wide water, abundant wildlife, and tranquil seclusion. Less than 3 hours from Capitol Hill, it is miles from the urban frenzy. Explore quaint small towns, bike on quiet country roads, or kayak up meandering creeks.

Or just sit back on the deck and watch the water, which never ceases to fascinate. At dawn, local watermen harvest crab and fish in traditional flat bottom boats. After dark, brightly lit cruise ships steam down the Bay toward the Caribbean. Herons pose on the jetties, pelicans and cormorants circle the fish traps, and eagles soar overhead. You may even spot a pod of dolphins swimming along the shoreline.

Our cottage sits on seven secluded acres, with 360' of private sandy beach. Our family has been building fabulous memories here for the last 27 years. Come build yours today.

Absolutely magical!

Just got back from three glorious days at this incredibly special place. I brought my three daughters and our two little doggies and a few of our most special friends, and we all had an amazing time. I love how secluded and quiet the location is, and yet how much there is to do together both inside and outside the house. The spaces are just perfect for quality bonding time. We didn't have any problems with the wireless internet receiver, but maybe that's because we had clear weather nearly the entire time. (It only rained one overnight!) Phoebe was so helpful when we discovered the paddle boat's rudder was broken (she is getting a new rudder soon!), which wasn't a big deal because the kids just used the kayaks instead (and loved them). We hope we can come visit this place again soon!

Perfect Vacation

5 of 5
Submitted: June 15, 2011 Stayed: June 2011
My family and dogs had an incredible vacation in Ophelia! I have been renting vacation homes for the past 20 years and I have finally found the perfect home. If you have ever dreamed of having your own private beach, seclusion and enough room for everyone inside and out, with so much to do that you will never get bored, than you must consider this home. Phoebe was incredible to work with, so gracious and accommodating. She has supplied everything you could ever think of for a vacation. All you have to do is bring your clothes! The house and the grounds are beautiful, the beds are very comfortable, everything new and in great condition. Large screen TV for movies, well equipped kitchen and games galore. The house provides WIFI, but we did have some problems with the signal going in and out. Outside there is huge yards on all sides to play games or just for the kids and dogs to run around. Swimming at the beach was so enjoyable; sand was soft, and the water shallow for several feet. We took the kayaks out and there is a paddle boat too. You must try the outside shower in the bamboo grove, it is amazing and so unique. I highly recommend this home for your next vacation. You will be delighted that you did. I will be returning this summer and for many summers to come.

Owner's Response: Marilyn: We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to seeing you and your family again later this summer. Unfortunately, the WIFI is intermittent. I wish we had access to a more reliable alternative.
