Some of Grayling’s area attractions feature canoe races on the AuSable River, Hartwick Pines State Park, The Fred Bear Museum, and local fish hatcheries. Grayling also boasts of Camp Grayling National Guard training facility. You may hear planes and/or choppers flying training missions near the lake, as the 'Range' is about a mile away. Sometimes artillery practice is heard, and sometimes we are treated to night sky flares. We are thankful for the training our National Guard has to defend our country.

Sisters- Friends-HOME! We grew up in this home, and it holds wonderful memories for both of us. We'd love to share it with you as well. Since we both live in the southeast part of the US now, we cant' just let this vacation home sit without anyone enjoying it! Allow us to share some of our family heritage with you. The home we grew up in, on the lake we love, in the peaceful woods that give us the roots in our lives.

Linda purchased this house in 1972

This is our family estate home. Built by our parents in the early 1970's without borrowing, selling, or leaving a debt. A memorial rock is at the side of the yard area commemorating their respect for the beautiful woods and lake area we still call 'Home'.

We love the beautiful walks along the lakeshore, swims in the crystal clear waters of the sand bottom lake, and fishing in a rowboat or right from the shore. There is always time for a hike through the woods, watching for deer and other wildlife at the stump with the salt block in it, or enjoying the squirrels frolicking through the tree branches.

As a family we love game time, and movie time, a walk through the woods, and meals together. Whether you want to read, and be quiet, go fishing, or play in the lake, there is something for you to do at Guthrie Pines. Bonfires in the evening are so relaxing, and it is always fun to make s'mores! Or just relaxing in front of the fireplace inside in the rocking chair, if that fits your style more.

We have added a fire pit by the lake with log stools around it for bon-fires and makeing s'mores, or even roasting your hotdogs! It's a beautiful view at night, and a great place for making memories with family and friends.

Nearby state parks offer other interesting things to do, and the local festivities in the summer add great fun to the time, 'Up North' at Guthrie Pines. Nearby rivers (AuSable and Manistee) are famous for canoeing, and there are golf courses in abundance in the area.

This a beautiful seasonal place to go. The summer fun onthe lake and relaxing is so pleasant. The hardwood and evergreen forests surrounding the house, make the Fall a beautiful time of year to visit. Springtime bursts with new life in the woods as the leaves bud and turn green. Sorry-winter is unique, but the house is not able to be open during the winter months.

PEACEFUL AND RELAXING

  • 4 of 5
Beautiful setting and gorgeous view of the lake!!! Very peaceful, except for the occasional jets flying over from the National Guard practice, which we enjoyed totally. We did go mid September so we hardly saw anyone on the lake. The owners brother has a cabin which was closer than we thought, but again no one was there and there is a wooded barrier between the two places. The home itself has the charm of the 70s, lots of room, and is set up great for large families. The mud room is huge, it has double doors to the outside and there is a dressing room/bathroom connected to it. Great for coming in from swimming or a rainy day. We didn't like were the fire pit was at all. It is really close to the water but kind of on a slant/side of the slope going down to the beach. You would not be able to get chairs all around it at all and would not be safe for little ones being it is just a few rocks built up in a circle. There is no dock which would have been nice since we brought a small boat and had to pull it up on shore. Fishing was not good at all, but that might be due to the time of the year. The lake water in front of the place is very shallow, clear, clean and would be great for little ones. The water pressure was really bad in the main bathroom and washer, but the owners were made aware of this. This place is definetly back in the woods and away from the busy town life, which we loved! Not sure what there is to do in the nearby towns, since we did not go. The owners are great to deal with and are willing to answer any questions you have!

Owner's Response: SO glad you could come! The fire pit area has been re-done completely and we have a terrace around it to make it safer and easier to sit by the fire! We also have added a picnic table and umbrella, and several more outside chairs. The water pressure has also been dealt with. Thanks for the good points. We continue to make the Guthrie Pines experience better every year! Thanks much!

RUSTIC AND RELAXING!

  • 5 of 5
Had a great time at Guthrie Pines on our vacation. Plenty of room in the cabin and the privacy of not being right next to other houses was lovely. The sandbar is great for the kids and parents can relax in the sun while the little ones play. The weather was absolutely perfect and there were virtually no mosquitoes around the campfire. Canoed, fished, biked and hiked. I personally LOVE the wood interior and decor. Sleeping on the screened porch brought back wonderful memories of my parents cottage and it was a delight to wake up to the loon calls. So hoping we can make another trip next summer!

WHAT A WONDERFUL PLACE TO VACATION!

  • 5 of 5
It is hard to adequately describe to beauty of the setting, the coziness of the home, the clear, cool, clean lake, the atmosphere of peace. The bathing beach is PERFECT for children of all ages, even very small, because of the great sand-bar that stretches out from the shore. The lake has plenty of fish, and the cottage has a live-box, so that fish can be kept alive until ready to prepare for eating - now how fresh it THAT! The fire-pit down near the shore is perfect for an evening of s'mores and story-telling, or just enjoying the calm of the lake.

The town is near enough to get to all the things a person might want, but far enough away so as not to spoil the "away from it all" setting.

Last year this property was booked solid in June and July. We're going to book early, this year! We were really glad to learn they would allow pets.

OUR STAY AT GUTHRIE PINES COTTAGE....WAS FANTASTIC!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I was very impressed with the cottage, from the moment we drove up. The inside of the home made us feel immediately welcome. Every inch was spotless, and the owners had thought of everything and had whatever you may have fogotten back at home. We did have a day of rain, and there was adequate things to keep us occupied from a beautiful piano, to a huge TV, and games galore. There were many stores a short drive which made things easier too. We do look forward to spending more time at this rental, and recommend it to anyone. The bedrooms, bathrooms, and other living areas were very spacious. The lake was crystal clear with a long, clean, beautifull beach.

OUR MINI FAMILY REUNION ON THE LAKE WE GREW UP ON!! :)

  • 4 of 5
We grew up on this lake. It was a wonderful & magical time and place for us. We have longed to go back but its a very private area so hard to find a place. My sister searched and found Gutherie Pines rental. Our stay there was way too short of course but it was a great time! The house was as described. The pictures were accurate. I wish there was a picture of the steps down to the lake though. It was very sandy and extremely dark(@ night) step area and we slipped several times. We had a problem with the door handle falling off too but it was fixed as soon as we mentioned it. The house slept 11 with some moving around. The house was clean and there were lots of basics in the kitchen left over from others, which was nice... The nearest real store is 17 miles one way! The area has lots to offer.. There is state land within walking to do about anything from quads, hunting, fishing, swimming in the Au Sable River.. There are tons of places to just walk among the ferns on the forest floor. The stars at night are unbelieveable!! The property is close to the Army Range so we got a great air show while we were there as well! The lake is crystal clear and great for fishing or boating. The swimming in front of the house was extremely shallow. The adults couldnt swim but the little kids loved it. There was also a swampy area real close to catch frogs, turtles and fish from. Dont forget your poles and bait! There was a washer and dryer there but the dryer was really slow so you might want to bring clothes pins for the line. There was a few really big lines to hang your wet stuff on too. There were cards, games and puzzles there. You might want to bring a few folding chairs for down by the lake. Also bring food and drinks or plan to stop at Walmart in Gaylord because prices at the local places are very high. Al's Pizza on Old 27 on the way in to Gaylord is great! Always was!! The owners were very helpful at answering questions and even mailed my pillow I left back to me! Thanks! I hope to come back every summer!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the thorough review! We're glad you had a wonderful time.
Swimming just to the left or right of center, in front of the house, gets deeper a bit quicker. Right in front the sandbar goes out a long way, but it is a pleasant walk! It is fun to bring a tube or air mattress and float out to deeper water for swimming fun.
We are looking at getting some lawn chairs for next summer. Clothespins are available on request. We will put them out in the mud room for next season's use. Probably updating the dryer as well.
Thanks again for coming! Book early for next summer, it may be busy!

PERFECT GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
Great place! Our family had a wonderful time, we felt at home right away. The house was warm and inviting. The lake was so clean and beautiful, we enjoyed playing in the water, fishing and canoeing.
The walks we took through the woods each day were so peaceful and enjoyable. Evenings always ended
with a bon fire. This was exactly what my family was looking for, the "perfect' up north getaway. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. We hope to return again next year!
