Overview

East End House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2)

Whale Watch is a lovely new home on the East End of St. John with spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea. At certain times of the year whales are migrating and you may possibly see humpback whales from the deck.

Beautiful views and waves lapping on the beach all contribute to your enjoyment in a private relaxed setting. Whale Watch is located on a private road ending a short distance away. It is a very quiet area with very light traffic. There is a parking area off the

street level with the front entrance.

You enter Whale Watch into a bright, cheery, well appointed great room including a sitting area with expansive views of the Sea and a dining area comfortably seating four people. The kitchen adjoins the great room, offering the same great views. In addition to the dining area, there is a breakfast counter for 2 between the kitchen and great room. The large master bedroom and bath is on the same level and offers the same ocean views. A beautiful stone outdoor shower adjoins the master bedroom. A large covered porch is a delightful place to sit and relax and keep an eye out for whales..

Whale Watch is close to several East End beaches. Hansen Bay offers a great beach with terrific snorkeling out and around Pelican Rock. Haulover, another great snorkeling area, is a short drive away. It is about a 12 minute drive to Coral Bay with restaurants, groceries, and rental of snorkel gear. The East End has some of the best snorkeling on the island and is more remote and thus more casual and laid back. We have two complimentary kayaks available to you during your stay, located at the beach for easy access to the water. This area is a wonderful area for kayaking in Round Bay and Hurricane Hole.

SPECIAL FOR WHALE WATCH GUESTS who visit for a minimum of 7 nights - We are offering a complimentary 3 hour tour during your stay on SERENASEA, a 30 ft classic motor yacht. Serenasea can take up to 6 people and is a great way to visit Hurricane Hole where there is terrific snorkeling in the mangroves. We also visit Flanagan Island, between the East End of St. John and Norman Island in the BVIs, if weather permits. We make 2 snorkel stops and offer drinks and a snack.

About Marie Naisby

I sailed to the Caribbean in the mid 90's on my 40ft. sail boat - WATER MUSIC. After sailing down island and visiting all of the Windward and Leeward Islands I returned to St. John. I built Whale Watch in 2004 and love the casual living on the East End. I have many friends on St. John and enjoy meeting the guests who stay at my home.

Why Marie Naisby chose East End

I chose this location on the East End of St. John because it offers a continuous fresh trade wind breeze out of the SE. I also enjoy watching the sailboats and cruise ships pass by. It brings back many fond memories of cruising on my boat.

WOW!

Where do I begin? We loved staying at Whale Watch! It was so nice to have a home to stay at rather than a hotel room. The views were incredible and the sounds of the waves crashing on shore were perfect to fall asleep to. Marie has everything you would ever need at the house including beach chairs, coolers, beach towels, hats, and beach bags. The kitchen is well equipped and even had bottled water in the fridge and popcorn in the cupboard.

One of my favorite things was the outdoor shower! My husband wasn't as thrilled as I was because some of the days were pretty windy and it made for a chilly shower, but I loved it. We don't have things like that in Minnesota!! How often do you get to shower with a view of the ocean?

We also had a blast on the boat trip. Marie is a great captain and knows all the good diving spots!

Make sure you fly in with plenty of time to catch the last boat to the island. (I believe the last boat leaves at 6:30pm.) It can be a little stressful if you cut it too close!

You will not be disappointed if you rent this house! Just the view alone makes it worth while, all the rest is icing on the cake!

Thanks Marie for the wonderful hospitality!! We had a great week!!

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our time at Whale Watch! We agreed we wouldn't stay anywhere else if we come back to St. John! The house is beautiful and the location is the best (unless you're into a lot of night life and crowded tourist attractions. Of course, then St. John is not your island.) The view is spectacular and the house is built to make the most of that. We ate almost every breakfast and dinner out on the deck overlooking the ocean. We usually took lunch with us in the cooler provided. There was a grill and the kitchen was well stocked for cooking. (We did our main grocery shopping in Cruz Bay when we first arrived.) A Jeep is a must and driving is not for the faint-hearted on the island, but it is so worth it! My hubby didn't mind driving on the left or the switchbacks, but we were glad we arrived at Whale Watch in daylight for the first time. We rented snorkeling gear at Crabby's (where Marie works part time) & snorkeled every day. It was fabulous! We especially enjoyed the snorkeling around Waterlemon Cay, Great Lamishur Bay, and Saltpond Bay. We also enjoyed Hawksnest Bay and snorkeling toward the west part of Cinnamon Bay. We saw sea turtles at Saltpond Bay and Cinnamon Bay. Haulaway Bay has cool snorkeling, too, but watch the sea urchins on the rocky way in. The snorkeling right on the beach at the bottom of Whale Watch's hill was pretty cool, too. There is an absolute forest of giant, colorful sea fans waving in the current down there. It was too rough to get around the point, though. We took Marie's kayaks out one day, too. That was great. Marie was fabulous. She shows you the place & then gives you as much privacy as you want. (She lives downstairs, but she makes a point to be as invisible as you want.) We enjoyed spending some time with her, though. She took us out on the yacht she captains for a half day. She took us to some more difficult places to get to for us to snorkel among mangroves and a reef to far from shore to be easily accessible. The only shower is right outside the bedroom. It was really cool taking a shower under a full moon that reflected both on the salt pond and ocean. Beautiful! We went in July and didn't see a single mosquito the entire time on the island. When we left, we really missed the house and the sound of the waves crashing, especially at night. What a beautiful sound to go to sleep to! We'd love to go back and recommend this place to every one!

Excellent accommodations and a gracious hostess.

  • 5 of 5

The property and home was clean, well equipped, and the views and breezes were as described. The owner was gracious and helpful. We enjoyed kayaking and the boat trip to a lovely snorkeling area. The location was peaceful yet proximal to beaches and hiking trails we wanted to visit. We would certainly return to Whale Watch.

Amazing View on Far East End

  • 4 of 5

My boyfriend and I are in our mid 30's and it was my 5th visit to the island and his 1st. I had always stayed in Cruz Bay and was looking to explore more of the island. Whale Watch was a great spot to enjoy the quiet east end. Located about 7 mins past Hansen Bay, it was a 15 min trek to head down to Coral Bay and about 40 mins past that to Cruz Bay and North Shore Beaches. The views make it worth the ride!

The home itself was decorated nicely and comfortable stocked with the basics and a chilled bottle of chardonnay. We enjoy dining out we love having a kitchen to make breakfast and pack the cooler for the day. Aqua Bistro was our favorite dinner spot in Coral Bay and our bar tender Paul was a wonderful host. The winds were whipping so no worries that there isn't AC, the temperature in the home is very comfortable (you'll need a sweatshirt for the deck). Unfortunately, those same winds made the outdoor shower very cold. We are from the northeast and can handle cold, it just made for record fast showering. (This is the only reason for the good vs. excellent rating)

Marie is a lovely and generous host offering a trip on her classic yacht which unfortunately did not end up working with our schedule. She does live in apartment downstairs which does not in any way impact the stay.

Our third vist to St. John - best vacation spot yet

  • 5 of 5

Even though our vacation was cut short by a death in the family, Whale Watch was just perfect. The house is clean and has wonderful views - the pictures are just what you see. Grill to cook, GAS stove, reliable, fast internet... it has it all. Great books to read, and the deck is superb.

Marie is a wonderful host, and out trip on Serensea was the highlight - snorkeling the mangroves.

We'll be back is the best review on can have. You will not regret staying here.

Stay longer than we did!

  • 5 of 5

It was our first trip to St. John, and we had to wedge our time in USVI in between other destinations, so we could only spend 4 nights at Whale Watch. Big mistake. Try to give yourself more time. I immediately fell in love with the house, the view, the waters---just everything. We've been home a week and I find myself closing my eyes and feeling the sun and hearing the waves lapping on the beach below Whale Watch.

The photos on this site accurately reflect the house, but somehow don't capture the beauty and the calm that comes over you when you're there. The kitchen is fabulous. We generally ate a bit of breakfast at the house, and then ate a late lunch in Coral Bay (we liked the bar at Aqua Bistro) and picked up something to enjoy on the grill for a dinner later at home. The bed is very comfortable and the open windows -- don't worry about no AC -- treat you to the sound of the waves all night. We were so happy to be at that location where you could hear waves rather than on a very protected bay where it wouldn't have sounded so lovely all night. We also enjoyed the (rather steep) trail down to the beach below the house. The outdoor shower is a kick, and very private (although the hot water was pretty slow in coming).

Marie was friendly and accessible and informative -- and then left us alone. Just perfect. The house had all the comforts that we needed, including binoculars and very fast and reliable wireless internet--very important to us! One of the reasons we chose this house was the kayaks, and we used them a lot. We loved the fact that we could use them to get to various little beaches and we could stop and snorkel pretty much anywhere. They were a real added bonus for us. Important to note that they are located a short drive, rather than a walk, from the house.

Speaking of driving---the roads in St. John are famously difficult, and the last bit up to the house was a bit of a challenge. I was glad our timing was that we arrived in late afternoon rather than later---I wouldn't want to try to find the house in the dark! We were certainly glad we had a jeep.

Choosing the East End worked perfectly for us. We loved being away from the hustle and bustle of Cruz Bay and we had easy access to anywhere we wanted to go on the island. We recommend Whale Watch!!

Map

Whale Watch is located on the East End of St. John, about a 10 minute ride from Coral Bay. The East End is very quiet, and casual living. There is excellent swimming and snorkeling within walking distance. The ocean view from the deck is breathtaking, especially when the whales are migrating. We have kayaks for exploring Round Bay and Hurricane Hole. North Shore beaches are about a 20 minute ride.
