WHALE WATCH - LISTEN TO THE WAVES AND WATCH FOR WHALES!

East End House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2)

Whale Watch is a lovely new home on the East End of St. John with spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea. At certain times of the year whales are migrating and you may possibly see humpback whales from the deck.

Beautiful views and waves lapping on the beach all contribute to your enjoyment in a private relaxed setting. Whale Watch is located on a private road ending a short distance away. It is a very quiet area with very light traffic. There is a parking area off the

street level with the front entrance.

You enter Whale Watch into a bright, cheery, well appointed great room including a sitting area with expansive views of the Sea and a dining area comfortably seating four people. The kitchen adjoins the great room, offering the same great views. In addition to the dining area, there is a breakfast counter for 2 between the kitchen and great room. The large master bedroom and bath is on the same level and offers the same ocean views. A beautiful stone outdoor shower adjoins the master bedroom. A large covered porch is a delightful place to sit and relax and keep an eye out for whales..

Whale Watch is close to several East End beaches. Hansen Bay offers a great beach with terrific snorkeling out and around Pelican Rock. Haulover, another great snorkeling area, is a short drive away. It is about a 12 minute drive to Coral Bay with restaurants, groceries, and rental of snorkel gear. The East End has some of the best snorkeling on the island and is more remote and thus more casual and laid back. We have two complimentary kayaks available to you during your stay, located at the beach for easy access to the water. This area is a wonderful area for kayaking in Round Bay and Hurricane Hole.

SPECIAL FOR WHALE WATCH GUESTS who visit for a minimum of 7 nights - We are offering a complimentary 3 hour tour during your stay on SERENASEA, a 30 ft classic motor yacht. Serenasea can take up to 6 people and is a great way to visit Hurricane Hole where there is terrific snorkeling in the mangroves. We also visit Flanagan Island, between the East End of St. John and Norman Island in the BVIs, if weather permits. We make 2 snorkel stops and offer drinks and a snack.

I sailed to the Caribbean in the mid 90's on my 40ft. sail boat - WATER MUSIC. After sailing down island and visiting all of the Windward and Leeward Islands I returned to St. John. I built Whale Watch in 2004 and love the casual living on the East End. I have many friends on St. John and enjoy meeting the guests who stay at my home.

I chose this location on the East End of St. John because it offers a continuous fresh trade wind breeze out of the SE. I also enjoy watching the sailboats and cruise ships pass by. It brings back many fond memories of cruising on my boat.

Excellent accommodations and a gracious hostess.

The property and home was clean, well equipped, and the views and breezes were as described. The owner was gracious and helpful. We enjoyed kayaking and the boat trip to a lovely snorkeling area. The location was peaceful yet proximal to beaches and hiking trails we wanted to visit. We would certainly return to Whale Watch.

Amazing View on Far East End

  • 4 of 5
My boyfriend and I are in our mid 30's and it was my 5th visit to the island and his 1st. I had always stayed in Cruz Bay and was looking to explore more of the island. Whale Watch was a great spot to enjoy the quiet east end. Located about 7 mins past Hansen Bay, it was a 15 min trek to head down to Coral Bay and about 40 mins past that to Cruz Bay and North Shore Beaches. The views make it worth the ride!

The home itself was decorated nicely and comfortable stocked with the basics and a chilled bottle of chardonnay. We enjoy dining out we love having a kitchen to make breakfast and pack the cooler for the day. Aqua Bistro was our favorite dinner spot in Coral Bay and our bar tender Paul was a wonderful host. The winds were whipping so no worries that there isn't AC, the temperature in the home is very comfortable (you'll need a sweatshirt for the deck). Unfortunately, those same winds made the outdoor shower very cold. We are from the northeast and can handle cold, it just made for record fast showering. (This is the only reason for the good vs. excellent rating)

Marie is a lovely and generous host offering a trip on her classic yacht which unfortunately did not end up working with our schedule. She does live in apartment downstairs which does not in any way impact the stay.

Our third vist to St. John - best vacation spot yet

  • 5 of 5
Even though our vacation was cut short by a death in the family, Whale Watch was just perfect. The house is clean and has wonderful views - the pictures are just what you see. Grill to cook, GAS stove, reliable, fast internet... it has it all. Great books to read, and the deck is superb.
Marie is a wonderful host, and out trip on Serensea was the highlight - snorkeling the mangroves.
We'll be back is the best review on can have. You will not regret staying here.

Stay longer than we did!

  • 5 of 5
It was our first trip to St. John, and we had to wedge our time in USVI in between other destinations, so we could only spend 4 nights at Whale Watch. Big mistake. Try to give yourself more time. I immediately fell in love with the house, the view, the waters---just everything. We've been home a week and I find myself closing my eyes and feeling the sun and hearing the waves lapping on the beach below Whale Watch.

The photos on this site accurately reflect the house, but somehow don't capture the beauty and the calm that comes over you when you're there. The kitchen is fabulous. We generally ate a bit of breakfast at the house, and then ate a late lunch in Coral Bay (we liked the bar at Aqua Bistro) and picked up something to enjoy on the grill for a dinner later at home. The bed is very comfortable and the open windows -- don't worry about no AC -- treat you to the sound of the waves all night. We were so happy to be at that location where you could hear waves rather than on a very protected bay where it wouldn't have sounded so lovely all night. We also enjoyed the (rather steep) trail down to the beach below the house. The outdoor shower is a kick, and very private (although the hot water was pretty slow in coming).

Marie was friendly and accessible and informative -- and then left us alone. Just perfect. The house had all the comforts that we needed, including binoculars and very fast and reliable wireless internet--very important to us! One of the reasons we chose this house was the kayaks, and we used them a lot. We loved the fact that we could use them to get to various little beaches and we could stop and snorkel pretty much anywhere. They were a real added bonus for us. Important to note that they are located a short drive, rather than a walk, from the house.

Speaking of driving---the roads in St. John are famously difficult, and the last bit up to the house was a bit of a challenge. I was glad our timing was that we arrived in late afternoon rather than later---I wouldn't want to try to find the house in the dark! We were certainly glad we had a jeep.

Choosing the East End worked perfectly for us. We loved being away from the hustle and bustle of Cruz Bay and we had easy access to anywhere we wanted to go on the island. We recommend Whale Watch!!

Million Dollar View - quiet private location.

We didn't want to leave Whale Watch or St. John. We were a little concerned when we booked this location that it may be a little out of the way..... have no concerns.....it is soooooo worth the drive. When you walk in the front door you will be delighted at the breathtaking views! The home is very clean and very comfortable. Everything you could possibly need is there. you will LOVE the shower! I hope that the passing by sailboats didn't use their binoculars! :) Marie met us and showed us around and gave us contact information if we needed her. We scheduled a date with her to go on the Serenasea for what turned out to be a lovely, fun 3 hour cruise to two different locations for some fabulous snorkeling. We saw turtles, starfish, sea cucumbers, squid and so much more.... One day we utilized the kayaks - which were conveniently located at the beach. We kayaked and snorkeled around several of the bays. We even discovered a 5 foot nurse shark near one of the outcrops of rocks as well as more turtles and some stingray. All this within minutes of the Whale Watch! We loved sitting on the porch with a glass of wine at the end of the day. We could see St Croix as well as some passing cruise ships far away and faintly lit up in the evening. During the day it was an easy drive (12-15 min.)down to Coral Bay (Donkey Diner Breakfast/Brunch or Pizza-check their schedule) and Skinny Legs for a good burger. Sweet Plantains - for a nice dinner. Farther down the road will take you to some more "good eating" - Miss Lucy's(goats, goats and more goats)or Concordia for Sunday Brunch (crab benedict! YUM!) Plan to spend a day at Salt Pond Bay Beach - this was by far my favorite snorkel spot (left side of sandy beach). Very friendly turtles there! Take the short walk on the Drunk Bay Trail which goes to a very interested "artsy" place! So fun! The only place that we saw a spotted stingray was at Leinster Bay which is a very easy 10 minute hike from the parking lot at Annaberg ruins. All in all St John is a beautiful island that will be sure to meet all of your expectations.......especially if you stay at Whale Watch. Thank you Marie for sharing your lovely home with us.

What's NOT to LOVE?!!!

What's NOT to LOVE?!!!
  • 5 of 5
From the moment you walk in the front door you WILL say "WOW!!!!" There's just no way for a photo to do this place justice.... open, bright, airy, clean, decor that reflects Marie's love of the sea, the incredible deck, and THAT VIEW!!! You will find it hard to pull yourself off of the deck, morning - noon - or night - and do anything else! The neighborhood is "quiet" - you'll actually feel all alone - and the only "noise" is the surf and the crickets....who needs an MP3 player with nature's symphony going on! You'll find everything you need in the kitchen....if you desire to cook!

We have been on St John 5X and actually vacationed there 3X - once in Cruz Bay and the last 2 times at Whale Watch... we are currently booked for another 10 days during 2012. The best snorkeling we have found, in all our travels on the island, is, indeed, Hansen/Long Bay, within walking distance of the house. Gorgious bay, beautiful cobblestone beach....most days we've had the place all to ourselves...except for the resident pelicans! Keep your eyes peeled for turtles, reef squid, rays, octopus, dolphins and lobster in this quiet, prestine bay. The kayaks are an added bonus!

The 1st morning we ever stayed at Marie's, we saw a whale, spouting on the horizon. And, just this February, we watched a couple of whales frolicking just below the house and out by Le Duck Island ...we watched in sheer delight for a half hour, before they finally sauntered off. What a treat!!

And, Marie! What a wonderful, kind, lovely, amazing woman!!! How gracious she is to open her home up to us strangers.... and now we are friends!

This truly is a home away from home....and away from it all!! If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing, peaceful get away, this is THE PLACE! We are already counting the days until Feb 2012!

Whale Watch is located on the East End of St. John, about a 10 minute ride from Coral Bay. The East End is very quiet, and casual living. There is excellent swimming and snorkeling within walking distance. The ocean view from the deck is breathtaking, especially when the whales are migrating. We have kayaks for exploring Round Bay and Hurricane Hole. North Shore beaches are about a 20 minute ride.
