Delightful hacienda and a great price!

  • 5 of 5

We had 15 of us for a family reunion. The hacienda was comfortable, roomy and well stocked with utensils for the fabulous meals we shared. For being on a busy street it was very quiet. It has ping pong, horseshoe, pool and plenty of tables to play cards. It really was ideal for our large gathering. Jason was absolutely wonderful so attentive and within a quick call. The doves and quail was very entertaining. The views were nice. We loved it so much we're coming back next year. The only downside is the kitchen cabinets were sticky the stove and oven could use an upgrade and be careful with some of the chairs a lil rickety.

Great stay at a great place

  • 5 of 5

We were at La Canada House again for a week in early March. We found everything to be very welcoming. The house was in good condition, and the road construction that had been going on out front is done. This year there was a new property manager, Jason, who was just as nice, helpful and knowledgeable as Ken had been. We saw Phil, the owner, again, and he was nice and cheerful.

Not much has changed in the house. As usual, there were baskets of goodies waiting for us on the counter when we arrived. There is a new washing machine, and a new piece of furniture in the bedroom I stayed in. Everything was clean, and the bathrooms well-stocked with towels, shampoo, soap, etc.

This year's visit was earlier than our previous visits, and the temperatures were somewhat cooler than during our previous stays, so we used the pool heater more, and were glad to have that option. We again saw plenty of wildlife, though fewer reptiles, probably due to the cooler weather. We grilled out a couple evenings, and enjoyed a lot of the local Mexican food spots and other restaurants the rest of the time.

I have to say, I love going to Tucson and staying at La Canada. I'm from Wisconsin, and I always get a much-needed break from our winters and have a nice relaxing time at the hacienda.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for submitting a review and for your repeat stay. We're happy you had a great time and certainly enjoyed better weather than in Wisconsin! We are all happy the road work is done as well! Jason is enjoying his work with the property and loves to meet all the new guests from around the country and the world. I 'm very happy to have him on site. Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you again next year! I am sure there are some good restaurants you still need to try! - Phil Cooney Owner, La Canada del Norte

wonderful family retreat

  • 4 of 5

in december 2014 we stayed at casa del norte. the manager onsite was highly attentive but not intrusive. the property was as advertised. the property/kitchen is well equipped and up to date electronically. there is plenty to do on site without leaving the residence. it is clean and authetic for tucson. i would suggest tools on north side of mainteneace shed be moved so the front can be enjoyed without looking at the tools. also the carpets probably need a good cleaning as well. i would definitely stay here again!. thanks for being so hospitable phil and jason!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your comments. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your time at the house and in Tucson! We are moving the garden tools to another area and will be enhancing this area as a sitting and conversation area. We have had a very busy season and as soon as we have a few days between guests, we will be shampooing the carpets throughout the house. Thank you again for your stay and your comments !

Late June visit = much needed pool

  • 4 of 5

The only complaint we would have is the construction on La Canada. We were not informed this was happening and it alters the feel of the property quite a bit. La Canada is also more of a major thoroughfare than the pictures of the property lead you to believe.

The pool was a life saver for a late June visit. The house stayed fairly cool, though the front room was too warm to use the pool table. The neighbors are fairly far offset which makes for more privacy. Ken (the caretaker) lives on the property, something that was also not disclosed before we arrived. He was extremely helpful and accommodating.

The house was able to sleep everyone in our party comfortably and the reunion party we hosted ended up being great. All in all a pleasant stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your honest and detailed review. As much as it can be said, most of Tucson has been dissapointed in the length of time the road work has been taking on La Canada Drive. We are in touch with the Road Construction Manager weekly, if not daily about updates and working with them on any impact to our guests. It appears the construction should be done by early November, 2014.

Once Again, A Very Pleasant Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our small group stayed at La Canada house again a few weeks ago. We were there last year about the same time, and enjoyed it so much that we wanted to come back.

Once again, the house and grounds were very clean, and baskets full of treats greeted our arrival. There were even little packages of chocolate Easter eggs hidden under each of our pillows (we were there Easter Sunday.) Lots of towels, complimentary soaps, shampoos, etc. were in the bathrooms. Everything was just as pleasant this year as last. They've replaced the dishwasher since last year, and a few pieces of furniture have been moved around. There is now a nice 8-foot pool table in the front room that Ken the caretaker is restoring. There is also a hammock out back which I don't remember seeing last year.

We had a great, relaxing time in Tucson again. This year we went to the Pima Air and Space Museum; there are so many old aircraft there that it's sort of overwhelming. A lot of the planes are outside, and it was unseasonably hot the day we were there, so I plan on going back there next year and going earlier in the day.

We hit several of the small mom & pop type Mexican fast-food places (Michoacan on Flowing Wells, just a little ways south of La Canada house, was a good one) and went down to the 4th Street area of South Tucson for some more formal Mexican dining.

We had several dinners at the house, and again we were impressed with the fully-equipped kitchen. I suggested to the owner that he might want to find some kind of utensil caddy to keep all the spatulas, whisks, etc. together, as they tend to be scattered between numerous different drawers. He thought that was a good idea.

They've installed a pool heater, so for an optional extra charge, you can have the water warmer than it might otherwise be. The water was warm enough for me, but one of our party preferred to have the heater turned on a couple nights. I can see where the heater would be a BIG plus during the cooler weather.

As last year, we saw plenty of the local wildlife around; I found that if you're brave and go outside really late, you can see and hear certain creatures that prefer to only come out at night.

Anyway, kudos and many thanks to Phil (the owner) and Ken (the caretaker) for helping to make our second visit another nice one. I think they take pride in the property, and the work they do to make it such a welcoming and relaxing place certainly shows.

-Tom C.

Great service, plenty big, a few quirks

  • 4 of 5

Our extended family rented this house for Christmas week and had a great time. We especially appreciated the attentiveness of Ken, the caretaker, who was always on the spot. Positives: big well-equipped kitchen, big back yard, nice pool, fairly central to a lot of Tucson stuff, 5 bedrooms, two with master baths, a nice pool table, plenty of parking, tons of hot water. Things to know: the house is on one of Tucson's major streets, and three of the bedrooms face that way. It didn't bother most of our party, but one couple did notice (largely because they were rebuilding the street while we were there - 7:15a backup beeps you hopefully won't experience when you are there). That couple's bedroom also featured a bed that seemed smaller than a queen ... I'd recommend at least queen-sized to more fairly accommodate three adult couples if your party has that many. There's a TV area that's somewhat small but worked for us and a bigger living room - we pulled over a few dining chairs and accommodated 12 around the Christmas tree, it was a little tight but not unpleasant. Because it was Decemeber in Tucson, we had to use the house's heater, which doesn't quite extend to the living room or the biggest master - we had to use a somewhat underpowered electric space heater that's in the living room fireplace and an AC/heater window unit. Neither were ideal - hard to keep an even temp - but not a deal-breaker. The pool heater is new and requires paying a daily upcharge, fairly standard for this sort of housing. The air temp was too cool for us to take full advantage of it, even though the pool was heated above 80. It may have to be hotter when it is cold, but cost is a consideration you should discuss when leasing. All in all, a big, comfy unpretentious hangout in a rustic, old-Tucaon neighborhood.
