We are a small family and live in Redlands, CA. We have an 9 year old son and like to spend our free time away at places like our home in Oceanside.
I and my wife both work, I in public affairs and my wife in environmental planning. We like walks on the beach, biking, and hiking.
Neil Derry purchased this house in 2009
We chose to buy our home in Oceanside because of its location near the beach, the pier, and the downtown. We restored this home originally built in 1926, to maintain its character and also provide all the amenities we are used too.
We are located near Legoland, which also has a great aquarium and water park. We are also located near the train station which provides easy car-free access to San Diego including the Gas Lamp District, Old Town and stadiums for both Padres and Chargers games.
Oceanside has great beaches, surfing, restaurants, and entertainment...all within short walking distance from our home.
We are fortunate to have found our dream house.
As mentioned before, we are only minutes walk away from beautiful beaches and the downtown, including a movie theatre. We are far enough away though that we do not get ANY of the foot traffic.
Our favorite walk is down to Maui Waui's where we order coffee for ourselves and hot cocoa for our son.
There are no major streets between our home and the beach which makes it safe to bike with our son down to the Strand.
I rented this house, for a weekend getaway with family. In total, there were 4 of us, plus a small dog - and the space suited us well. The experience was positive, from start to finish. Neil is very responsive and accommodating, making sure that we had all we needed for an enjoyable stay. The patio area in the front, was perfect for reading and relaxing. The beds - and soft sheets - ensured a good night's sleep. The kitchen was well-equipped (including a much-appreciated large pot coffee maker), although we did not cook during our stay because local restaurants were so convenient. The location makes it easy to get anywhere - we attended the Days of Art, and the earth day festivals in Oceanside; and made a short trip to check out Carlsbad. It was also terrific to be so close (a very short walk) from the transit station - where I was able to hop a quick train to San Diego when it was time to leave. Thanks so much for your hospitality!
We just got back from a four-night stay at this delightful bungalow. There were three adults and two small active dogs, and the facilities met our needs nicely. We used the front yard only because we didn't want our renegade pups to squeeze under the drive-in gate and go exploring, and had plenty of room. The front yard fence was dog proof and overlooked by the armchairs on the patio. (There is a gate at the side of the house that closes the front yard off from the back.) Neighborhood felt safe and not noisy even though just a block off the Coast Highway. Had we stayed longer, we would have used the wonderful kitchen but we found plenty of eateries a short distance away. The beds were very comfortable and the linens abundant. This is an ideal place for an affordable California vacation. Thanks, Neil and family.
This house was perfect for my wife, two daughters, and I. It's cozy but still had plenty of room for all of us. The cottage is nicely furnished with plenty of towels and extra bedding. The back deck was perfect for enjoying our small gathering for my wife’s birthday. It’s a short walking distance to the beach and downtown. The cottage had everything we could possibly need and the yard was perfect for our small dog. Will definitely be going back and would recommend to others! Neil is very gracious and responded quickly to any question or concerns we had.
This was our first experience renting a home for vacation. We always visit Oceanside in the summer and when we heard our normal hotel had been sold and upgraded it looked like we might have to miss out until we found this home that could accommodate our entire family saving us from our typical hotel setting.
Neil contacted me right away to assist me with questions and the entire rental process. He remained in contact with me throughout our stay making sure we had everything we needed. He was amazing.
Now on to the house...
This house has a fenced in yard, both front and back. Great for sending the kids outside to play or if you have a dog, perfect! When you enter the home you are invited right into a great living room opening up into a large dinette / fully remodeled kitchen. The dinette has French doors that open up to a semi - private front patio with a great 4 person seating area. Also off the opposite side of the dinette is the exit to the back yard that includes a wonderful deck w/ seating for two and off of that another patio with a dinette set right next to a natural gas grill. Perfect for eating at home through out your entire stay. There is even a cute little studio out back that can be rented for an additional fee that has been remodel too and includes it's own bath.
Neil even had bikes, wagon, beach toys, umbrellas, chairs and boogie boards for us to use. Truly a considerate owner who wants you to enjoy your time away from home like you are "at home."
The location of this home is perfect. Only a few blocks from Oceanside Pier and Mission Ave. Easy walk to and from the beach so you don't need to worry about traffic or parking. In a quiet neighborhood with no issues from anyone.
Some musts while staying in Oceanside:
Johnny Mananas - Cleveland and Mission Ave, say hi to Johnny. Love this place!
Ruby's on the pier - food is ok but if you are lucky enough you can see a large pod of dolphins or what the fisherman are catching off the pier.
The Harbor - rent kayaks, paddle boats or even a dingy. Shop, have some ice cream or enjoy a cocktail.
Fishing from the pier - free, no license required. Bring your poles or rent from the shop right on the pier.
This house was perfect for myself and my 7 friends. It's cozy but still had plenty of room for all of us. It was adorable and nicely furnished, plenty of towels and extra bedding for the futons. Nice walk to the beach. It's also right next to the train station which was very convenient for us since we took the train quite often to San Diego. Overall a lovely home and location.
We are located 10 minutes from Legoland Theme Park which also boasts an interactive Aquarium and new Water Park.
Half hour driving distance to: San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and San Diego Wild Animal Park.
One hour drive to: Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm Amusement Park.
The local train can be taken to Petco Park (Padres), Convention Center (Comic Con) and the Gas Lamp District in San Diego.
