The Cider House is a custom built two-story home located between Durango and Durango Mountain Resort. We are just North of Trimble Hot Springs.

Originally rural farmland, this area is developing with more homes and neighborhoods but it still retains a rural feel as there are open fields, national forests, and orchards near the house. Our house is surrounded by fruit trees and the covered porch opens to a huge yard and orchard. Past the orchard and fields you will see the D&SNG Train pass by on its way to Silverton. There are beautiful red cliff and mountain views in every direction from the house. Folks love to relax on the covered porch, sit under the trees, and play horse shoes or ping pong in the yard.

Our chickens roam the open areas and orchards and 1dz farm fresh eggs will be in the fridge for your breakfast. Cherries, peaches, apricots, apples, and plumbs are available in season.

The master bedroom has a luxurious pillow top king size bed and master bath. Also upstairs there is another full bathroom, the 2nd bedroom with a queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom that can sleep up to five with two full beds (bunk) and a pull out twin trundle bed. This beautifully furnished smoke free house has a fully equipped kitchen with granite countertops and bar, custom cabinets, high end appliances, coffe-maker, micro, toaster, large gas bar-b-q, etc. etc. It has everything you need to make a great meal.

The house can sleep up to 9 in beds. There is a fold out couch in the TV room and we have 2 pac-n-plays available for the little ones.

The Cider House has an open floor plan, new furniture leather couches, a large HD flat screen, and a TV room that can be closed off via pocket doors from the living room if desired.

We offer Wi-Fi Internet and a large library of 250+ movies as well as an HD TV with HD cable. The shelves are also stocked with area maps, guide books on hiking, biking, and area activities and historical books on the train and Durango history. There are games for the kids, pac-n-plays for the little ones, horse shoes, ping pong, and a slide outside.

We are in the perfect location for outdoor fun and just short drive to Durango. Close to the Cider House are hot springs, hiking and biking trails, a grocery store, pizza place, gas station and liquor store.

Near Net Zero Green Home: A high efficiency boiler provides In floor heat throughout the house. Additional bathroom heaters and south facing windows make this a very warm, bright and comfortable home. The solar panels on the roof replace all the electricity this house uses from the grid. Recycling bins are provided.

We are local owners that live just a few houses away so you can be sure if you need anything or have any problems, we can be there for whatever you need. We have 3 boys ages 9-11 that love making new friends and showing kids around the 6 acre property.

I grew up in Durango and moved back in 2000. It's a great place to live and raise our 3 boys. Our oldest is 10 and our twins are 8. We love the outdoors and spend lots of time hiking, camping, rafting, etc. The winter brings skiing and hockey.

This 6.5 acre property was once a much bigger farm with the main farmhouse built around 1902. Despite the growth in this area it still retains a rural feel while being just 10 minutes away from Durango. There are dozens of mature fruit trees on the property including apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, and cherry and lots of space for the kids to run around. We built our house in the north orchard in 2004 and I built the Cider House in the South orchard in 2011.

I built this home in 2011 using quality materials to create a comfortable and modern energy efficient house. In floor heating in stained concrete floors and good insulation keep the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. All new appliances, furniture, beds, etc.. It is sunny and bright and it is just a comfortable house. The covered porch is so great for sitting, eating, and looking out at the trees, the mountains, and the steam train chugging by in the distance.

We loved Cider House!

Cider House was the cleanest, best maintained Home Away home we have ever stayed at (and we have stayed in quite a few in US and Europe) ! Even took pictures inside just in case we ever build a home ourselves ! We stayed for a week with 5 children, location fantastic for sightseeing the area, was nice just staying at home too! Very kid friendly,kids had a great time in in the orchard with all their great new mates, and were very sad to leave! Thank you Chris and family for a terrific stay in Colorado ! Anne from Australia

a crowded setting in a poor location

I take credit in not being more suspicious when there was just one, angled exterior view of the house in the listing. The reason: it is very close to some very sketchy houses with old cars, poorly kept up, etc. We walked in and walked out directly to a hotel. No ac, opening the windows yielded dead and live flying bugs in the sill. I was refunded the damage deposit and cleaning deposit, offered to pay for the first night but the owner charged me the entire 5 night stay despite no reservation listed after our departure. The property is overpriced, there are much better values in better locations in this area.
Owner's Response: I received a message from Marty that said the house had no AC and they were leaving. I called them back within the hour to discuss any issues and he never returned my call. I visited the house that evening and it was warm, 74 degrees inside, as it had been shut for a few days, I opened the windows and the evening breeze quickly cooled the house into the mid 60's. This is common practice here as very few houses need or have AC. Our neighbors did have an old jeep he was fixing up in his driveway, but this if a family with young kids, not sketchy at all.

There is really no validity in the rest of the comments. I suspect something else may have been going on as I never heard back from him, only this bad review.
We love staying in VRBO's as a family and do our best to make sure our house is everything it should be for our guests. We live close by and can quickly take care of any needs or requests. We are very reasonable people and always willing to work with folks if they communicate with us.

My husband and I were lucky to get a few midweek days on an impromptu basis, slipping in between long-standing reservations. We can't wait to return for a longer visit. The house is beautifully and comfortably furnished, and the kitchen is surprisingly well equipped - something very unusual in most VRBO rentals. I was able to invite local friends over for a home cooked dinner; no issues with dull knives, or no cutting board, or a lack of pots, pans and mixing bowls. Appliances are top of the line and the owner/builder has thoughtfully put the laundry upstairs, and provided supplies to use it! The house is spotless and linens are top of the line.
The photos of the property show the beauty of the setting - but cannot convey the charm of trees loaded with fruit, lush lawns, mountain breezes, and chickens running across the back of the property (and they are confined in their chicken house until mid morning so there is no problem with being awakened by a "dawn call").
The Durango area has plenty to see and do - but it was just as tempting to lounge around this very comfortable, relaxing house; truly, a home away from home!
(Try the happy hour at the Office lounge at the Strater, the patio at Old Timers, clamchowder at the Red Snapper, and the buffet at Himalayan Kitchen. For stocking the kitchen, City Market on the north end of town is great).

We loved this house and the fact that it is solar. We did not have any issues regarding a lack of hot water, or anything else that might be related to a solar powered house. We were a party of 7- 2 families with 4 adults and 3 kids. The kids loved the chickens and the trees for climbing and the large yard for running around. The back patio was great for eating dinner outside every night. The BBQ was an asset, as were the washer and dryer. The beds were super comfy, the house quiet and there was plenty of room for us to spread out. The neighbors we met were friendly and respectful of the space and kept a low profile. We enjoyed the hot springs just down the road. Groceries are a short drive away - no need to go all the way into the city proper. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative and would love to stay here again should my travels bring me back.

If you are looking for the perfect family vacation spot in Durango the Cider House will fit the bill. The home as been brilliantly renovated with many thoughtful touches such as an up to date kitchen with a duel fuel range, dishwasher and a large walk in pantry. Included in this spacious rental is a large washer and dryer, comfortable furniture, a tv viewing area that can be shut off from the main living room, a ping pong table, an apple orchard with outdoor furniture to mention only a few of the thingsI loved about this house.

The very hospitable landlord lives a few doors down and will gift you a dozen fresh eggs.

Don't miss the Cider House for a relaxed well appointed place to stay. Enjoy!

It has a large solar panel array that offsets all the electricity it uses. In-floor heat is provided by a high 95% boiler. A very comfortable well insulated home. A shuttle to the top of Hermosa Creek trail can be arranged. Ride back to the Cider House from DMR on one of the top 10 single track trails in the country.
