We survived Hurricane Sandy in this wonderful house!

We're a family of 3 from the UK and like to plan our vacations in advance. However, when we booked our holiday to NYC way back in 2011 we never expected to be sharing the city with the worst hurricane to hit New York in living memory. We chose our vacation accommodation well though - not only is the house fabulously well equipped, wonderfully comfortable and homely, superbly warm and dry but it also took the storm in it's stride.
We were unfortunately unable to get back into Manhattan for a few days once the storm had passed but we explored the local area which we may not have done had circumstances been different. We walked around Flushing Meadows Corona Park (2 minutes on foot from the house) and I made full use of Aamir's WiFi to research the 1964 Worlds Fair, some remnants of which still remain in the park. We bought food locally and cooked at the house (I don't think I've ever seen such a range of cooking equipment at a holiday rental) and we got a taxi to Flushing itself and wandered round the town, soaking up the atmosphere. My teenage son installed himself in the 'basement penthouse' and rented a few DVDs from a good guy in Corona who was willing to allow us rentals for a 20 dollar deposit even though we were only there for a week.
Aamir is the perfect host and even apologised for the hurricane (although I'm pretty sure it wasn't his fault!) The property is spotlessly clean and has every facility you could hope for.
We didn't quite have the holiday we'd been expecting but given the devastation in other parts of the surrounding States I count my family lucky to have been staying in Queens, and luckier still to have found this house and Aamir.
We will come back to NYC and try again - when we do, we'll be staying here.
