About Evelyn Dumaine-Marshall

We bought Wisteria Cottage in 2005 as our second home, a place to unwind from the frantic pace of the city. Improving the house and gardens has become a true labour of love for us. Nowadays we think of Wisteria as a perfect refuge from the workaday world, and many share our view. We are pleased and proud that some of our guests have returned to spend their vacations here year after year, some since 2005.

Our jobs and our lives have taken us all over the world, and Wisteria showcases some of the artworks and textiles we have collected in our travels. It is our great pleasure to share this very special place with you.

Why Evelyn Dumaine-Marshall chose Summerland

We love Naramata for its fabulous natural beauty and recreational excellence, for the unparalleled peace and quiet we enjoy here, and for the excellent city amenities (restaurants, book stores and the like) that are close at hand.

What makes this house unique

Wisteria Cottage offers a singular blend of perfect privacy, natural beauty and quiet, relaxing comfort. The house fronts onto Camp Creek (a regional wilderness park) and offers an eagles' eye view over Okanagan Lake. The colours, hues and moods of the lake change frequently throughout the days and evenings. The sunsets across the lake as viewed from the terrace and the house are fantastic! And the soothing sounds of the rushing creek in the canyon below make for perfect, restful sleeps after a "hard day" of touring and wine tasting.

Excellent as it looks in the pictures

We recently spent 4 nights at Wisteria with my parents who were visiting. We had a great stay. We found the property to be exactly as advertised, and just how it looks in the pictures here on VRBO. The cottage, which is quite private despite having other properties to either side, is very comfortable for 4 adults. The deck is fabulous - the view is outstanding, and because it is west-facing and you are reasonably high on the hillside, you get sunshine until late in the evening. A great place to enjoy the wine you've purchased from one of the many nearby vineyards in Naramata. The wisteria from which the cottage gets its name is a fine specimen, and provides shade for those that need it.

In terms of the finer details, nothing was lacking their either. There was a complimentary bottle of wine chilling in the fridge - exactly what we needed after the 4 h drive from Vancouver. The furniture is not tired or worn - something you can't always tell from pictures. The BBQ has two tanks of propane instead of 1, in case you run out during your stay. There are ample basic ingredients available for you in the kitchen, and all appliances are in good condition and work perfectly. Netflix on the TV (if you really need it with that view...) will be a bonus for some.

In terms of activities to recommend (other than the local wineries obviously), we spent one day and drove around to Myra canyon. This is a 10 km stretch of the Kettle Valley Railway with many of the classic high wooden trestle bridges, which has now been converted to biking/hiking use. It is about a 90 minute drive from Wisteria, but well worth it. We took our bikes, and cycled the full length and back again - easily done on a commuter bike, and the gradient is never more than 2%, so we saw people aged 5 - 70 on it.

We would recommend Wisteria to friends and family.

Ironman 2012

What a lovely stay we had at Wisteria Cottage! (We stayed for a week to watch our daughter in Ironman Canada, and to enjoy the wine country.) The photos don't do Wisteria Cottage justice; it exceeded our expectations from the moment we arrived. It's a beautiful, well-laid-out house, well- maintained, and immaculate. It's a very peaceful setting, and yet close to wineries, fruit stands, and restaurants. The restaurant at the Naramata Inn was especially good. Wonderful food, outdoor dining, and a friendly, professional staff--what could be better?

Evelyn, the manager, was helpful from the beginning, and was available when we needed her during our stay. We look forward to the next time we can visit; we'll bring our bicycles then. We've already recommended Wisteria Cottage to friends.

Wisteria Cottage, Naramata, As Quiet and Restful as You Want

5 of 5
Submitted: September 1, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
The Wisteria Cottage is located on the "quiet" side of Lake Okanagan, about ten miles NE of Penticton, up a pleasant country road dotted with fruit orchards and vineyards sloping to the water's edge. First, to me, the Wisteria isn't a cottage but a fully appointed (with A/C) home. We found it clean as a whistle, enjoyed our Master Bedroom with in-suite bath and lake view, appreciated the well supplied and modern kitchen with its excellent cooking equipment and basic supplies, TV/DVD/Sterio, and long patio, with hammock and barbecue overlooking the wooded property rolling down to the lake about a mile distant (sunsets gorgeous!)

The Wisteria is located on a quiet ridge road overlooking Lake Okanagan, about a five minute drive from the lake and "downtown" Naramata, which is a quiet village, not a strip mall resort or amusement center. Naramata has a excellent swimming beach/picnic/ball playing park, there's a kayak/paddle board rental, a small grocery store, and a sedate bar and grill. Go to Penticton for the "action" scene and fast food, go to Naramata to enjoy the lake, swimming, and boating in more quiet and relaxed manner. Hike the RR trestle walk alomg the ridge above Naramata or the serene creek park leading through forested glens beside its small waterfalls.

We stayed at the Wisteria with our adult daughter and teenage grandson and thoroughly enjoyed our "no agenda" vacation, playing with our dog in the lake, hiking, kayaking, barbecuing and relaxing on the patio, sharing some good mysteries at night on the DVD, and exploring the orchards and vineyards.

The Wisteria is all that's its cracked up to be on their website..clean, comfortable, relaxing, with a beautiful setting above the lake. Enjoy the fruits of the tree (peaches, pears, apples) or the vine (excellent whites and reds) at this home away from home!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review, and also for correcting the impression sometimes given by the word "cottage" in the name. We are really happy that you enjoyed your stay! Sharing Wisteria "Cottage" with others is one of our greatest pleasures.

We throughly enjoyed our one week stay in this home and will return in the future. The house was immaculately clean, the view was staggeringly beautiful, and the kitchen was very well equipped with cooking and serving utensils. The sounds of the nearby creek eased us into sleep each night. Life was easy here!
The location of the home was perfect for exploring the wineries of Naramata, many of which serve decadent lunches akin to the south of France. The larger wineries are very busy in the summer and lunch reservations are often required but our best lunches were often found among the smaller vineyards. Misconduct Winery offered a tapas lunch that was our favourite.
The Kettle Valley Railway path is easily accessible at the top of the street and bicycles can be rented in the village at very reasonable rates. The 2% grade of the path allows easy cycling for all ability levels. The views from this pathway are unparalleled.
Paddle boards and kayaks can also be rented from the bicycle shop in the village. Three Mile Beach was our favourite.
The owners have also provided guests with detailed information about the home and the attractions in the area. The owners clearly take great (and well deserved) pride in their property. It is a little piece of heaven.

Wisteria Cottage is unforgettable. We have stayed twice, once in winter and once in the spring. Each time we left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The interior is decorated with original art, and also boasts a large, diverse library. The view overlooking the lake is fantastic; and we found the house spotlessly clean and the yard well maintained. Wisteria is spacious and equipped with everything you might need for a short or a longer stay. We loved every moment of our time there. The "cottage" (really a two-bedroom house) makes for a perfect get-away. Highly recommended!
