I am a Realtor/Broker and Artist and have lived in Volcano over 10 years now. I have also lived on Maui, Oahu and spent much time on Kauai so I can help you plan your trip throughout the islands.
My family is very active and love the local activities - our favorites are hiking Kilauea-Iki and picnicking at Bird Park.
Volcano is one of the most magical places on earth. The tropical rain forest - the only one of its kind in the U.S., the active Volcano and the amazing beauty of this area are all part of why I fell in love with Volcano.
The weather here is just about perfect - especially if you like rain!
If you spend time here you will come to believe in the power and magic of Pele.
The Hale Hapu'u is just a minute from the fabulous early Sunday Volcano Farmer's Market at the Cooper Center/playground/skatepark. Another minute and you are in Volcano Village with wonderful restaurants, shops and our intimate post office.
Just another minute down the road and you are at the entrance to the Volcanoes National Park.
Another minute and you pass the Volcano Golf Course, Country Club and Winery.
And just one minute more and you pass Mauna Loa Road which takes you to the enchanting Bird Park with picnic areas and more...
I think there are probably a lot of nice places to stay around Hilo, but we don't have any interest in finding them. Hale Hapu'U is where we stay in Hilo. Period. Having spent three nights there, we felt SOOO comfortable. It took us a full day to stop yammering to each other about how awesome the place is and just start enjoying it.
Cosmetically, it's really nice to look at. Plenty of natural wood, koa, bamboo, etc. Granite counter tops. Nicely lit; good control of the lighting, etc. Seating options are plentiful and comfortable. The kitchen is well provisioned should you decide to do some cooking. Showers are amazing - with glass exterior walls (don't worry, they're frosted, and the grounds are private) so you can almost feel like you're outside. The forset room, which we also rented, is on the opposite side of the place from the other bedroom making it ideal for privacy.
But the best (and most central) feature is the 360 degree fireplace. We built a fire one evening and enjoyed the warmth and glow all evening.
The grounds are quite private and quiet; nice for enjoying the hot tub in the evening, and for sleeping.
Krish took excellent care of us. His attention to detail is awesome. Little things, like putting clear instructions for using the WiFi in the drawer under the modem on the kitchen counter. Everything was like that. There was fruit and danish for us to eat upon arrival. Coffee for the morning. The hot tub was clean and set to go. The place was so clean; we later found out that Krish had stopped by before we got there, and cleaned it again because he wasn't satisfied with how clean it already was!
Our only regret was that we didn't have more time to spend there.
The Hale Hapu'u is an amazing place. Beautifully designed and decorated, every little corner of the place got the right amount of attention and came out perfect. Wherever you look you see beauty, and wherever you are you feel comfortable. As if the energy there is positively infused.
The beautiful showers with the large window into the green trees is an amazing experience.
The wonderful balcony with hammock and hot tub.
The fully accessorized kitchen which has got everything you need to prepare a gourmet meal.
The comfortable beds.
The place is simply perfect. I wish I could take it home with me.
We (3 adults, 2 kids) stayed here for 5 nights and just had a WONDERFUL experience--we rented the entire house including the Forest room. The house is truly beautiful -- as good as or better than all of the pictures (that almost never happens). Wonderful use of wood in the home, beautiful Asian and Island art throughout the house, huge gorgeous bathrooms, WONDERFUL beds. The house has a stunning fire place in the middle of the livingroom that we used three different nights. Huge deck in the back for hanging out.
Kitchen is great -- spacious and well stocked with everything you need (except a microwave which they tell you upfront isn't going to be there). The house is 30 seconds away from an AWESOME farmer's market where we loaded up of superb fresh food on Sunday morning.
The property is great -- super quiet (we never saw another person the whole time we were there) and has its own rain forest which we spent several hours hiking in. It rains a lot there (it is in a rain forest!) but the sound of the rain is on the roof of the home is just lovely!
We used Hale Hapu'u as home base for exploring Volcano Nat'l park (just a few miles away) for 2 days....then Waipi'o Valley and Wakaka Falls, Mauna Kea Peak, Rainbow Falls, Lava Road on the the east side (end of Highway 130/137), the Mauna Loa Mac factory, Champagne Pond, and Ahalanui Warm Springs. Great centralized location for hitting the volcano as well as the NE and SE sections of the Big Island.
Krish, the property manager, is awesome. Had the house looking great when we arrived and provided a huge basket of tasty fresh fruit as well as Kona Coffee for the morning. She is very low key but was very helpful and very responsive -- recommending 2 GREAT restaurants and several excellent hikes.
Mahalo Kriah and Hale Hapu'u........we would stay there again in a heartbeat!
Volcanoes National Park, Volcano Farmers Market, Volcano Winery, wonderful hiking, picnicking, bird park
