Overlook Guesthouse is a spacious and newly re-decorated one bedroom which was the original farm residence and part of a larger building containing a garage and Ron's play space with wood and metal working tools. All who see it think it is charming and surprising. There is a large fenced yard and patio.
Overlook Guesthouse is located on 10 private and gated acres which is home to Overlook Driving Center, a place for the training and competition of modern carriage driving horses. We would be happy to offer you a ride and some interaction with our horses is available. If you have your own horses, we invite you to bring them. They can be stabled on the property.
This property is in a quiet neighborhood of 10 acre properties, which is virtually surrounded by vineyards. The location is convenient for visiting the area cities and attractions, while maintaining a truly country atmosphere. Over 100 wineries are within touring distance, as well as many fine restaurants, parks and beaches.
This guesthouse is a good choice for those who want a quiet and private location for work or rest. Ron and Linda, your hosts, will do all we can to customize your stay to your pleasure.

Linda is a retired carriage driving judge and trainer, which itself was a second career after many years of residential design and drafting. Now, she has 4 horses, who keep her physically active and able to compete in horse shows and trail rides. They are John, Cari, Johnathan and Clare. She also enjoys flower and vegetable gardening, though without much real skill or knowledge. There is one resident dog, a miniature Poodle named Joseph. The family is rounded out with 6 hens who give us (and you) fresh eggs.
Linda Fairbanks purchased this farmhouse in 2010
Ron's family has been in Paso Robles since 1890. They were farmers and ranchers. We built this structure and used it as a caretaker quarter until 2010, when it was refurbished to be used as a vacation rental. We chose this location because of it is ideal for our sport of carriage driving and centrally located to the local cities.
This is a comfortable place for quiet work or relaxation. It would be a good place to write or paint or do any creative work. There is a 14' x 19' bedroom, a large and airy bath with shower and a living/dining/kitchen space which is conducive to conversation. The large patio is part of a large and shady yard which is fenced to allow dogs to relax outside. There is a covered kennel next to the patio for those who travel with dogs and want to leave them while they sight-see. We encourage visitors to enjoy walking on the property, visiting with the animals who live here and also the natural ones who share this bit of land. There are many rabbits and quail, occasional deer and fox, many hawks, meadowlarks and crows. We enjoy feeding the ducks and chickens every evening. Chicks are due to hatch today (October 15). The newest addition is guinea pigs, Walnut and Rosie, who live in the carriage room. We love their little noises and soft coats. Their cage is rather large and they love it when we re-arrange their toys and furniture. The olive grove is growing well and our first harvest was delicious. The carriage driving continues here with 3 Overlook horses getting use every week in addition to the visiting drivers who practice here. Finally, we have added a telephone to the amenities inside the guesthouse. It is for local calls only but we hope it will be a convenience for guests.
We have stayed at many VRBO properties and this is one of the best. I especially appreciate the quality kitchen items, so many times it seems that people put whatever doesn't work in their own homes into their rentals. This place is done very thoughtfully. I appreciate the quality linens and comfy beds also. The hosts, Ron and Linda are very helpful and accommodating without being intrusive. So nice to have staples in the kitchen and refrigerator too! Oh, and fresh eggs! Wonderful! Having access to the beautiful grounds, horses and other animals was a treat as well. The fenced-in yard was great - even in winter and we really enjoyed the fire pit also. I can't think of one negative thing...we look forward to coming back again and staying longer. Thanks for everything
Linda and Ron are the most wonderful hosts, and the cottage is too cute! Linda had a welcome sign with my name on it when we arrived with her cell number, a lovely touch! It's hard to say what we loved most: location, chickens, horses, warm home, fresh eggs...the list could go on! Linda and Ron were so wonderful in helping us find day trip ideas (like seeing the elephant seals!) to helping us find a place that fixed our flat tire for free! They were very tolerant of our exuberant Boxer who had never seen chickens before. :) Comfy bed and couches, nice quality towels and bath items and Linda includes a few lotions and soaps for you to use. Felt like staying with family. Hope to come back soon!
This is the first vacation rental that I'd say I'll definitely come back, thank you so much ♡ Linda ♡ !
We enjoy everything here, the horses, the ride, the scenery, the house, the hammocks, the coffee, the fresh eggs...... even the wine decanter. Clean house, cozy decor.
Our 7 months lab - Mimosa was so happy to see so many different kind of animals, off-leash running and chasing ball/horse carriage in the fenced 5 acres area, she's so happy.
This is the most unforgettable birthday celebration trip for me, thank you again Linda ♡♡
My wife and I have used VRBO since 2011. This has to be one of our favorite vacation rentals we have used!
There are so many details about the place that we like, but the list can go on and on.... Here are a few keywords. Fully furnished. Great patio/garden area. Air Conditioning. LARGE/BEAUTIFUL land. Horses. Chickens. Outside of the City. It is worth every penny! The owners are delightful and we will be returning soon.
Very relaxing and rural quiet---yet only 10-15min. from towns. Owners could not be nicer and helpful. Fresh laid chicken and duck eggs provided daily for brkfst. Ideal for our dog and very accomodating to pets. Great views of hills and valleys and sunset. Everything you need for cooking/BBQ. Ideal for a couple or small family. 2 outstanding wineries 5 min away--Sculptera and Cass. And Firestone brewery nearby in Templton.Very clean and nicely decorated and provided. We will go back again and we highly recommend quiet, relaxing, unstressful getaway
Very comfortable with everything you can think of, clean, neat, owners are very personable and caring. I would rent againa nd reccomend
We chose to do something different this year on our annual wine tasting trip to Paso. Rather than stay in a motel down town, we chose to stay in this most delightful rural setting. There was plenty of room for 3 hiking companions with very comfortable beds. We found the rooms to be clean, bright, cheery & well maintained. The morning sounds of the farm with chickens and braying donkeys was a great change from our usual city sounds. The hosts provided fresh eggs (duck and chicken) that helped start each day. We loved sitting outside in the evenings with a glass of Paso wine while enjoying a small fire in the pit on the patio and gazing at an amazing view of the milky way. We all agreed that we can't wait to stay here again for our planned spring 2015 Paso wine tasting trip.
Ron and I realize how difficult it is to imagine where a place is and what the area is like. We would be happy to visit with you on the phone to help orient our guesthouse to the type of local sites you are interested in. On our property, we offer carriage Driving with Horses, Contact and interaction with Horses. Carriage rides offered by appointment. Overlook is a place where carriage driving is taught and where local drivers come to practice for competitions. This is a great spot to fly kites and we keep some in the guesthouse for your use along with board games. The Chicken Condo is home to our 10 hens. When possible, we supply fresh, free range, homegrown eggs to our guests. There is also a house for the 3 ducks who live at Overlook. A horseshoe pit is a popular game, along with a garden chess set. Our new olive grove has given its first crop and the 2014 crop will be large enough to make oil and eating olives. One can often see herds of bicyclist flashing by on nearby Cripple Creek Road and occasionally a hot air balloon will glide by or roar its burner to rise as it goes. We love the sun rise and sunset views, especially when there are clouds. Often, guests will stroll the approximately 5 acre grounds around sunset with a glass of wine to catch the best color in the sky. They choose that wine from the many tasting rooms in the general area, some as close as 3 miles away. Sometimes, guests will arrange to be picked up by professional drivers to do their wine tour, but mostly they enjoy the pleasure of finding their favorite wineries by searching on their own. Many guests have now become members of wine clubs at tasting rooms and come back regularly to pick up their wine. There are too many options to list, but there are lots of brochures and suggestions in the guesthouse. We hope you will leave a note or a card telling of your own finds.
