Find rest in this quaint two story Creekside cottage that comfortably sleeps 6, nestled in the woods of south central Pennsylvania. Look up a new recipe in our cookbooks and create delectable meals in the fully furnished kitchen, browse through local history books, classic stories and children's books in French country decor living room, build a campfire with free firewood and roast marshmallows over the backyard fire ring, enjoy fresh mountain air and bubbling spring while you grill steaks over a propane grill. Enjoy one of our many board games in the living room or listen to crickets while you sip iced tea from the furnished front porch. Then tuck in for the night in one of our 2 bedrooms-uniquely and thoughtfully decorated with half bath close by. No laundry worries as fresh towels and linens are provided and the cottage contains a laundry room with washer/dryer, ironing board, iron and other extras.

When you are ready to roam...enjoy history sites and outdoor activities.

Ready To Roam?: When you are ready to roam...you can enjoy our beautiful mountain creek from a creekside bench or shoot some 3 pointers at the basketball hoop, the conococheague creek is a stone's throw through the woods if you'd relish a short hike.

When you're ready to venture further...visit newly renovated cowan's gap state park (just 7 minutes from the cottage door) where you can swim in the waters of a mountain lake, lounge on the sand, hike or bike on the lakeside trail, picnic, paddle boat, canoe or fish (ice-fishing in winter). Winter months offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing at whitetail ski resort (20 min.) And fair weather golfing at whitetail golf course. In windy weather, take a drive to the lookout point on top of the mountain and watch hang gliders take the plunge.

Ready to Learn?: For history buffs or educational jaunts, the gatehouse's central location makes day trips to several national and state history sites very doable. We are: 10 minutes to historic fort Loudon, 15 minutes to historic Mercersburg & James Buchanan birthplace, 1 hour to Gettysburg and Harrisburg’s civil war museum, approx. 2 hours to Washington, D.C., Harper’s ferry, and Antietam battlefield, and 2.5 hours to Philadelphia. We are also an easy 2 hour turnpike drive to Amish country in Lancaster pa. Many of our guests take day trips out to see the sites and find the cottage to be a refreshing respite at the end of a sightseeing day. Close by educational locations include: 10 minutes to the renowned Mercersburg academy, 30 minutes to Wilson college, and 45 minutes to Shippensburg university, and 1.5 hours to Penn state.

Ready to Dine, Shop or Play?: For those who enjoy amenities of fine dining, shopping,, theatre, amusements...the martins are available to suggest great dining experiences, the prime outlets are located 0.5 hours away in Hagerstown, MD, and the renowned totem pole summer theatre founded by jean Stapleton is a straight 30 minute drive on route 30. Our local C.R. Bucks (10 minutes away) restaurant offers deer for viewing and feeding, an arcade, miniature golf, techno hunting, family friendly entrees, and delicious dipped ice cream all while enjoying hunting memorabilia and games as well friendly greetings from local folks. Family Vacation

The owner contacted us prior to our vacation to let us know they would not be there on site when we arrived. We didn't think much of this. We read the documents sent to us via email. There was a nice list including directions and area attractions as well as local grocery stores and such. This was very helpful.

We arrived at the home and we were not greeted. This was not a huge deal though we weren't really sure what we were supposed to do. We weren't told to check in anywhere. We turned the door knob and the door was unlocked. We went in and found little "Check In" and "Check Out" cards on the table. On the 3rd day there we were greeted by the owners. They were very sweet and did ask if we needed anything. At this point they also provided us with Internet access.

This home was very well maintained, warm and comfortable. There were lots of little extra's and the owners were very thoughtful. The decor was very inviting and relaxing. The lack of cable television was a big plus! It was nice to peel the kids away from the normal daily routine. There was a portable television with family DVD's in the closet, though the games were a very big hit with our entire family. It was great to have several different entertainment options right at the house. There was a nice fire pit in the back yard with all of the necessary items to enjoy a fire. There was plenty of firewood and supplies to start the fire with. There were also two barbeque grills available for use. Every little detail was worked out effortlessly. There was a fully equipped laundry room complete with supplies.

The only downside to this home was the kitchen. It was really tiny. The table only seated four individuals so this didn't work well for our family of six. There were also only four chairs. I think it would be a nice addition to have a few more chairs available. It would have been nice to have dinner all together. Due to the tight space, meals were quite chaotic. It was rather difficult moving around the kitchen while cooking and cleaning as the space is so tiny. I would really say that this house accomodates four people comfortably and is quite a tight squeeze for a family of six.

Overall, we did enjoy our stay and we thought the owners were extremely thoughtful.

Though we can't address the kitchen size, we've made extra chairs available (located in the laundry room) and suited the kitchen with an expandable table. Family Vacation

Our family of 5 stayed at the Gatehouse in June and had a wonderful experience. The owners were very thoughtful and wonderful hosts. The cabin was clean and very well maintained. The place looks just like it's pictured on the site: warm and inviting. It is in such a wonderful relaxing setting. If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing place - this it. After having spent several days in D.C. sightseeing it was a refreshing change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the city for us. We loved Cowen's Gap State Park. If you're looking for more to see and do; it was only a little over an hour for us to drive to Gettysburg, spend the day and then come back. A two thumbs up!

The cabin was well taken care of and maintained. It was nice to have washing facilities on site. My only complaint was that the kitchen was not well equipped. The cabin slept 6, but there were no frying pans or pots that could accommodate meals for that number yet there were 2 crockpots, something we never use. Everything had to be done in small batches. We came stocked with cookbooks and expected to do a lot of cooking with local produce and were not able to due to the kitchen facilities. That aspect was very disappointing. Other than that, the owners were very nice and the place was clean and comfortable.

Weekend with family

Our family enjoyed a very relaxing weekend. Perfect place for the 6 of us. Enjoyed Cowan Gap State park on Sat. Very clean - cozy place to spend the weekend.

Enjoyed a quick get away at the Gate House. Thank you for all the "extras". Wasn't there very long but enjoyed our stay. Everything we needed was there and it was clean and comfortable.
