We have been part of the Frankfort community for over 50 years. We enjoy all the area has to offer including boating, sailing and biking. We have shared many memorable moments with our family and friends and hope that you do too.
The Owner purchased this house in 1996
This property has dual benefits. From the house, the views are spectacular and the setting is private. The nearby beach and park area are wonderful for swimming & relaxing.
We provide a double kayak and canoe for your use. There also are beach chairs for you to enjoy.
Our second trip to this wonderful property and beautiful area lived up to and exceeded all our wonderful memories - no small task! The weather always cooperates here, because there is something for everyone in the family to do no matter what it's like outside.
The view, the porch, the fully-equiped gourmet kitchen, the size (cozy not small), the furnishings, the generous hosts - all perfect for our family! We love exploring the area, preparing and sharing meals, enjoying the many wonderful local restaurants, long walks with our yellow lab, relaxing and sharing family time, watching World Cup games (fantastic A/V & wi-fi provided), golf, the bookstore, art galleries...
In short - we love everything about this very clean, quiet, secluded yet convenient 5-Star home!
We traveled two days by plane and car, 2350 miles total, to arrive at Crystal Lake Retreat.
We stayed 3 weeks. We didn't want to leave. My review in one word, WONDERFUL!
The house fit us, 5 adults 2 children (ages 3 and 5) perfectly. The kitchen and dishwasher got a work out as we cooked every day. Ditto with the washer and dryer, especially with little people. The dinner table, porch, & hot tub served as the center ring for all the laughter and stories with family and friends.
What did we do there?
Talk, sit, swing, relax, laugh, sing, walk, hike, run, eat, drink, swim, rock hunt, boat, ski, tube, canoe,
lake & sky watch, hot tub, play cards, take pictures, ride bikes, picnic, fish, bonfire.
(TV's in every room, not required!)
We appreciated the extras provided: linens, towels, paper goods, soap, crock pot, BBQ, & life jackets. Jean was a dream to work with over email and phone. She was both kind and prompt answering our many questions and concerns. The house was super clean, organized, and decorated with great cottage/lake style.
Location was fantastic for us to host our "Pure Michigan" visit. We loved the view, the trees, the breeze (no bugs!) the dock, the space. The shared waterfront and boat hoist was great. Our city kids loved playing "woods", content with sticks and a piece of rope on too-cool-to-swim days. The lake water was something to rave about. It is as clear as the name--Crystal! The towns of Frankfort, Beulah, Benzonia, & Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, were close for food shopping and adventures. We visited the local farmer markets too.
Looking back, I'm feeling your place was a lovely treasure found. Too good to be true?!
Truly, it was a very special time for our family and friends.
Thank you, Jean and Alan, for helping us make some memories to keep always.
Great Place!! View was fantastic of Crystal Lake!! Far enough away from the Shore Line Road with traffic, but close enough to walk to the lake. Very sandy beach, nice dock, etc. House is beautiful and very clean. Everything you need to live there - kitchen, linens, etc!! Owners are FANTASTIC and easy to work with.
This cottage lived up to all of our expectations! It is a beautiful home that doesn’t feel like an “up north cottage” at all. We comfortably fit 6 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby and never felt cramped. The view from the porch is fantastic. We spent most evenings out there talking, relaxing in the hot tub and enjoying wine from nearby wineries. The distance to the beach was never an issue for us. The beach area was perfect for the kids. The lake is clean and sandy, not rocky and mucky. Being up on the bluff provided shade and a nice breeze, which kept the house cool during the very hot week we were there.
The owners are very nice and easy to communicate with. Jean took the time to talk to me over the phone and through several emails answering all of my questions before we booked. Alan was there to meet the first of our group to arrive to walk us through things and show us where everything was. Alan was kind enough to lend my husband his bike several times during our stay. They coordinated with a neighbor to allow us to use their buoy to anchor a family member’s boat overnight. Every room was completely stocked with everything we needed. The location is great. We drove to Frankfort, Glen Arbor and Suttons Bay while we were there.
Overall, everyone really enjoyed our week on Crystal Lake. We would all definitely recommend this property.
We stayed here last summer for the first time, and vowed to come back this year. Everything was as perfect as last time. We did a lot more cooking in the lovely kitchen and didn't lack for a thing when it came to cooking equipment (not to mention fresh herbs from the garden). The owners, Alan and Jean, are such thoughtful and friendly hosts. Jean made a point of waiting at the cottage to meet us this year, so it was a pleasure to see her in person. They left us a welcome package of coffee, pancake mix, and maple syrup, which is always helpful when you haven't had time to stop for groceries on the way up and are still travel-weary. We spent time in the hot tub, kayaked the Crystal River, shopped in Frankfort, hiked on the trails across the road, and took a dip in the lake. I spent a lot of time just reading and relaxing, which was exactly what I needed.
We'll be back again in 2014 for sure. There is no better place to rejuvenate and take part in all that Northwest Michigan has to offer than at Crystal Hilltop. You won't be disappointed!
Isn't it great when your expectations are exceeded? Ours were - this cozy cottage with the rejuvenating view of the lake was just what our family needed. If you have a great book or two, you might hope it rains so you can enjoy the cozy interior with gas fireplace OR the porch swing with your favorite beverage. This is the perfect launch pad for an epic bike ride, kayak expedition, or slow-motion shopping excursion. I will not even mention the gorgeous and well-designed kitchen - you simply must open a bottle of wine or prepare a meal in order to fully appreciate all the fine features. Our yellow lab Lily Butters gives this property and the boat dock/retrieving area 5 Tennis Balls out of a possible 5!
