Overview

Mariposa House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

California has cowboys, beaches and surfing, skiing, hiking and shopping all rolled into one beautiful state. Seeing Yosemite when you vacation in California is a must. For this vacation, expand your mind and enjoy a true California experience by staying in a straw bale home. Unlike those of big bad wolf fame, modern straw bale homes are warm and comfortable. They provide a unique place to rest your soul (and feet) after a day of discovering Yosemite.

Our newly constructed Yosemite Straw Bale vacation home is a wonder. While the straw bales provide incredible R-50 insulation, we are using passive solar heating for preheating our radiant floor heating system with an instantaneous hot water heater as a backup system. Our photovoltaic grid panels are naturally creating clean energy from the sun. We tested these techniques on our own home and perfected them in this vacation rental for your enjoyment. Made to feel like your private second home, design touches include a social kitchen with a granite slab bar height counter, finished dyed concrete floors, and cozy radiant floor heating. Sitting hilltop at 3000 feet elevation (914m), the house includes a private deck perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views. We are also honored to share with you, eight fine art prints by renowned Sierra photographer Howard Weamer.

The gates of Yosemite are a mere 35 minutes away* on a drive that follows the wild and scenic Merced River. (*Your drive may take longer as you stop to put your feet in the river or photograph the wildflowers along the way.)

What makes this house unique

Our hilltop is incredible for enjoying sunsets, sunrises, star gazing, wild flowers and bird watching all from the comfort of your private deck.

Peace and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

The pictures tell the story quite accurately - this place is well situated with wonderful views, and away from it all. No noise from traffic at all! We would sit out on the deck for evening cocktails and morning coffee transfixed by the beautiful surrounding mountains. Everything was perfect - the place is immaculate with every conceivable item. Kathleen has thought of it all. We really liked the ecological focus for the home which was our first attraction when looking, and then when we saw the place for real, it is really impressive and amazing. The kitchen was fabulous, rooms comfortable and showers perfect (after a long day hiking in Yosemite). The internet was outstanding -quick and without any hitches. Our Verizon phones got 4 bars of service. The electronics are really modern - almost more than we could figure out given all the gadgets. Alex showed up in less than 3 minutes to help us figure it out. There is no cable tv so we missed our favorite show, but that was a minor inconvenience. The grocery store in Mariposa is first class with everything you would want or need, so stop there on the way and stock up. My only wish was it could be a bit closer to the park - we ended up logging lots of miles that week as we explored all corners of Yosemite, and then had the 'extra' miles to/from. Ah but the drive was easy and scenic - my wife snoozed on the way home as I cruised along window open enjoying the breeze... Thank you for such a special place - it made my first visit to Yosemite a trip I will always remember fondly.

Amazing only begins to describe this fabulous home

  • 5 of 5

If we could select 10 stars we would. Everything we ever hoped for in a quality rental home was here...and more. From the amazing help and information from the owner ahead of our booking to the actual property itself was exceptional. Our 2 girls (8 and 7) adored this special home from the recessed windows, the gorgeous peaceful setting, the wildlife...everything! It was immaculately clean, organized, tidy with comfortable beautiful bedrooms and special touches that added to an amazing stay. From the washer/dryer with detergent provided to basics like the 'emergency coffee' - every area was covered! We HIGHLY recommend this home to anyone seeking bliss away from home but especially to those with high standards and who appreciate a beautiful home.

Great way to start a vacation

  • 5 of 5

Far and away this was the best house we have ever rented. Kathleen and Alex have a wonderful house that they are willing to share with you. Nicely furnished, clean, comfortable, every thing you need. We are used to bringing spices, good sharp knifes, baggies, laundry soap, etc, they have it all available. You can't pick a better house to rent.

Excellent Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our family of four, including two kids in college. It is super well-stocked (emergency supply of Starbucks, French press, nice pots and pans, etc.) and very comfortable. We hiked and toured the park for three days and returned each night to unwind, cook a delicious dinner and enjoy our evenings at this lovely home. The drive to Yosemite was roughly 35 minutes on winding roads, but beautiful as it follows the Merced River. We have rented several properties through VRBO and this one is a gem. We highly recommend this rental home and its owners.

The most perfect place to return to after a day in the Park

  • 5 of 5

Kathleen & Alex, the Straw Bale House is a credit to you both. The designed layout works perfectly, it's well proportioned, beautifully appointed and equipped and in a perfect location for quietness, wildlife, vistas and easy access to Yosemite NP.

Since the Rim Fire became apparent in the media, we had been following it's progress almost daily and had reconciled ourselves to Yosemite Valley being very hazy and smelling of wood smoke. Maybe we were lucky but visibility was brilliant, especially from Glacier Point and no smoke pollution at all that we could sense. Tioga Road re-opened to through traffic the day we left.
