Comfortable place for a family visit

  • 4 of 5

Our three-generation party of five (mother, father, toddler, infant, grandmother) had a comfortable one-week stay at Sharon's house. The best thing was being able to spread out and relax. With three bedrooms upstairs, a large living room downstairs, plus the roomy basement, everyone had privacy and we were able to vary things for the kids even on days when we were mostly at home. The house was clean, the beds were comfortable, communication with Sharon was excellent, the neighborhood was pleasant, street parking was plentiful, and the SEPTA train station was an easy walk: all as advertised. It was a treat to find the basement stocked with puzzles, games, and children's books, and to find helpful guidebooks on the dining room table.

I loved the Weaver's Way food coop (five minute drive) and the Malelani Cafe sandwich/tea shop at 6734 Germantown Ave (betweenPelham Rd & Westview Ave, a 10-15 minute walk).

There were some downsides. First, if you do want to spend a lot of time in Philadelphia proper, you will soon get tired of either taking the train or driving. We would have regretted our choice of lodging if we hadn't been hampered by the kids and our desire to save money for a week's stay. Second, the fact that the trains only run once an hour makes this option somewhat less convenient than we had anticipated. Third, there is no bathroom on the ground floor. We also got pretty tired of going upstairs or to the basement every time the toddler needed to use the toilet! Fourth, the kitchen does not have a dishwasher. Finally, while the kitchen is functional it is, like many rental kitchens, eccentric. There are too many pots, making it hard to negotiate the cupboards; at the same time, there aren't really enough oven-ready pans. The knives are dull and the manual can opener is broken.

All in all we feel we made the right choice and would recommend the house to other travelers with similar needs.

Great location for visiting the Philadelphia area.

The home was fully equipped with notes on everything from the way to operate everything in the house to places to see and eat. The train just a block away was perfect for travel.

Family Vacation Philly/Sesame Place

  • 4 of 5

This was a great spot. The house was fine, we didn't use the basement much as it wasn't as well ventilated or temperature controlled as the rest of the house, but overall this is a fairly substantial townhouse and was able to deal with 6 adults, 2 toddlers and 2 young kids just fine.

The neighborhood was fantastic. The neighbors were all very welcoming, and helpful. We had folks move their cars so I could take a closer spot to get my young daughter out. The neighborhood also has a labor day bbq and I wish I had known as we'd have stayed an extra day or two to enjoy the folks on the street.

The location is great. 5 minute walk to the commuter rail, 40 minute drive to Sesame Place, 20 minute drive to the Zoo. So we were able to take advantage of a lot of stuff while we were there.

The kitchen is amply stocked. I couldn't find extra sugar while there, but it wasn't a big deal. We left a lot of condiments as well, though I don't know if those stay or get rotated out. Grocery stores are within 2 miles, lots of on street parking. There was one spot in the back of the house which we didn't know about until several days into our vacation. No big deal, but had it been winter it would have been nice to know it was there.

Laundry facilities were useful as we kept up after the towels and our own clothing. The washer-dryer are clean and in good working condition. As others have mentioned there is no dishwasher (not a big deal), or disposal. So be prepared to rotate dishwashing duties.

I'd stay again in a heartbeat as the neighbors and location are great.

Clean and ready for us

  • 4 of 5

We were pleased to walk through the front door into a cool, clean house on a warm and humid day. The neighborhood was OK. We were close to main streets so access to highways was OK. Fully equipped kitchen and plenty of luxury linens. The only downfall was the fact that the .5 bath was in the basement and full bath with both a shower AND bathtub (which was very nice) was on the second floor made it hard for someone with mobility problems, like me, to continually climb the stairs to use the facilities. The one inch mattress really doesn't fit the 'sleeping arrangements' as stated in the basement. Other than that, we'd highly recommend the house. If you have no accessibility problems and don't need the sleeping futon and mattress, this is definitely a great house for you!!

Nice stay

  • 4 of 5

Nice play with a well equipped kitchen and other basics like laundry detergent. It's about 20 minutes to the downtown and near a metro line. Well worth the price.
