Cardinal Springs--Serenity and Adventure on 130 Private Acres!
Escape to the serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains and experience the magic of Virginia country living at our entirely renovated, historic 2 bedroom farm house. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a special place to celebrate, or a week-end retreat, you've come to just the right place!
Take advantage of all that nature has to offer by exploring our 130 acres of mountain forests, pastures, gardens, ponds, and historic structures. Watch the fireflies light up the starlit sky as you relax on the porch or on the magnificent covered dock. Hike our mountain trails. Swim, canoe, or fish in our fully stocked, 3 acre pond. Or roast marshmallows around the campfire and listen to nature's brilliant nighttime chorus!
Experience the amazing beauty of the surrounding countryside by visiting Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and 'Old Rag' Mountain only minutes away. Bike some of the most scenic country roads in the Mid-Atlantic region, visit award winning wineries, marvel at the Blue Ridge by horseback, and take home treasures from the many local art galleries and antique stores. If that isn't enough, expand your abilities with yoga lessons, art classes, and drumming circles. And, if relaxation is your primary goal, we will help you to arrange a massage, beauty treatment, or catering on the premises!
Enjoy the wide range of local dining options, from country bakeries, quaint diners, and gourmet eateries featuring local produce and meat, to world class dining at the Inn at Little Washington only 10 minutes away. If you'd rather prepare your own meals, you can do it in your modern, fully equipped kitchen featuring granite countertops and new cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. Dining options on the farm range from picnics in the woods to romantic, candle lit meals on the dock or screened porch with views of the pond and the Blue Ridge.
In addition to a modern kitchen, our 1860's farmhouse features high speed Internet and new baths with whirlpool tub, pedestal sink, washer/dryer, and tiled floors and shower. Stone fireplaces and a wood stove add ambiance and warm you in winter, and ceiling fans in every room make the central air conditioning necessary only in the hottest days of summer. Lovely 19th Century wood floors grace the house throughout and historic, winding wood staircases lead to cozy but roomy bedrooms upstairs. Please note: The staircases are rather narrow and steep, and are unsuitable for individuals with mobility issues or who need bedroom and bath all on one level.
The cottage has 2 full suites, each with large eat-in kitchen, living area, screened porch, one large bedroom, and bath. The Pond View suite has a queen and twin bed, whirlpool tub and shower, and fireplaces up and downstairs, whereas the Mountain View side has a queen and double bed, large tiled shower, and wood stove downstairs.
One suite is perfect for a couple and a child; rent both for a larger family or to share the house with friends. An adjoining door between living areas may be left open or closed. Regardless, you will have private use of the house.
We also offer a new, 2 bedroom upscale Barn Loft (VRBO #457779) with spectacular views of the Blue Ridge from every room. Entirely modern with glass front wood stove, slate and wood flooring, soapstone counters, and stainless appliances, this is a most special addition to our farm about an eighth of a mile from the farmhouse.
Finally, if you would like to fully experience rural life, you are welcome to help us with the many projects that farm living offers, from gardening and caring for the animals to projects around our restored 1860s log barn. We will make every effort to customize your stay so that your experience is memorable! Friendly, well mannered pets that will not harm our farm animals are welcome. We are a non-smoking property.

Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves 'refugees' from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county 'Poor Farm' in 2004 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (2 mules, 2 horses, 7 goats, 25 chickens, 3 ducks, 3 guinea hens, 2 dogs, 5 barn cats, with more planned!). In 2010, we moved to our new home on the farm--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch. And in 2012, we restored the old chicken coop and added chickens to our little menagerie. We also completed work on a new barn that includes a new 'Barn Loft' to accommodate additional visitors. Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with those who stay with us!
Andrea Wooten or Steve Ray purchased this farmhouse in 2004
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!
Our property is secluded, at the end of a lovely country lane only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. Our friendly farm animals will love and entertain you. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is just the place!
Thank you for your warm hospitality. The kids had a great experience with the chickens and Madeline! We loved to be able to feed all the creatures and to spend time near your peaceful lake. Blessings to you!
My family including our puppy cannot say enough wonderful things about staying at Cardinal Springs. The location is superb for exploring the Shenandoah National Park, wineries and breweries, great restaurant or for just relaxing. We were able to do all this on a wintry long weekend. Reading books by the fire while enjoying the view after a leisurely walk was one day's activities. Another day great brunch in nearby Washington and then a quick hike in the Shenandoah. Everything you need is provided for you luxuriously in these accommodations. The view, again, is spectacular and communing with all forms of nature really brings one back to earth after the hectic life so many of us live. We will be definitely going back!
Loved the journey through the rolling landscape. Arrived late but no problem, our house was ready and waiting for us. We prepared our dinner in the cozy kitchen. Forget something? No problem the kitchen is fully outfitted.
Slept warm in welcoming bedroom and woke to chickens and guinea fowl and a nice hike through the hills. Our dog thought he was in heaven!
Perfect location for prowling the charming, historic towns of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge.
The hosts were most accommodating; close by but giving us plenty of privacy.
Really, our stay couldn't have been better.
Two families (4 adults and 3 teenagers) met to spend a delightful weekend at this lovely farm.
We arrived at Cardinal Springs the day before Thanksgiving. Because of a snowstorm we arrived much earlier than the stated check-in time. When I apologized for the early arrival, Steve was very understanding.
We were able to put both of the farmhouse kitchens to good use cooking and enjoying our Thanksgiving feast.
Our teenaged daughters loved checking out the property, meeting the goats, horses and mules as well as the very friendly barn cats. I had a great time as an amateur chicken tender, collecting eggs and even petting one of the sweetest hens you will ever meet.
The farm is located to give you the feeling of isolation even though the town of Sperryville and several other towns are very close-by. I recommend this rental to anyone who is looking for a rustic setting with all of the conveniences of home.
Our family of four (2 adults, 2 children ages 11 and 13) enjoyed a very relaxing weekend in the Farmhouse. It was clean and cozy especially with the wood burning fireplaces. The highlight of our stay was the interaction with the gentle animals. Our children fed the horses carrots and apples and the goats peanuts. The chickens, cats and dog kept us company as we roasted marshmallows for smores at the outdoor firepit. Our children collected eggs which our daughter used to bake a cake. Steve and Andrea were very welcoming and encouraged us to feel at home on the grounds. They even took the time to allow our children to assist in trimming the goats' nails, which was a fun and interesting experience. The gardens were filled with tall colorful flowers. For a relaxing and peaceful weekend in the country air, we highly recommend Cardinal Springs! Don't miss a tour of Copper Fox Distillery, a visit to the shops and restaurants of Culpeper and fresh apple cider at the many farmers markets/stands.
We stayed as a couple for a couple days in the pond suite in the wintertime. One beautiful day to hike Old Rag and a rainy day to visit the wineries and local life. It's a really nice get away. Practically everything you need is there. The animals are all around, chickens, goats, horses and all, making it quite peaceful. Enjoyed the fireplaces and the wood supply. A couple finer points, like almost everything you need is there, but then some things aren't like, dish washing liquid or sugar, which we didn't think to bring. And the chickens lay eggs every day but you have to buy them if you want them. For the overall cost per night, it would just be nice to be able to say everything is there that you need and you can almost say that. But it's 99% there so it's not a deal breaker, just nice touches that would be appreciated. Also a lot of rules about leaving. Do this, do that, start a load of towels or sheets. We left it very clean and did all that, but felt like usually you only do all this when staying with friends, and friends don't really charge you do they. But this is all sounding too negative when overall, you get a wonderful setting, beautiful views and great attractions close by. We had a wonderful time and are maybe more critical than we should be. To each there own. We would stay there again for sure.
My family and I spent 4 days in this magical and highly spiritual place, enjoying not only the outstanding hospitality of the owners, but also a multitude of animal and plant life. We would highly recommend this farm for anyone looking for a short respite from the hustle and bustle of normal life, and a return to a simpler time. We will definitely be coming back.
Yoga and other exercises classes are available 5 minutes from the farm and on site by request. Massage therapists will come to the house. The Inn at Little Washington is 10 minutes away, Old Rag 25 minutes.
