Overview

Gualala House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

The Hideaway is a fabulous Mendocino Coast Vacation rental. You can feel the rest of the world almost slip away as you enter this enchanted place. Here you will find our house and property situated on the ridge above the ocean. In this very private location you feel as if time has paused in a different era, one where life is simple, where kids run free to explore the forest without worry, where there is no traffic, no noise, you feel transformed.

Our house just outside of Gualala (pronounced wa-la-la) is located about 30 miles south of Mendocino, and about six miles north of the famous Sea Ranch, a coastal development renowned for its architectural respect for the environment. Which means you have easy access to the arts, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gualala. The presence of Sea Ranch and many vacation homes allow wonderful shopping and arts to thrive in this small community. Nearby there are wineries, galleries, restaurants, wonderful beaches, kayaking, hiking, lighthouses, (See our What To Do section). Though even with all this to do, we often find it hard to tear ourselves away from our hideaway on the hill.

Our home is surrounded by gardens with a blue water view out to the ocean from the kitchen and the sunroom. The kitchen is spacious with a large table for the whole family to enjoy meals together and in the winter warmed by a woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots/dishes/utensils/dishwasher, just bring your food!

The open floor plan includes the kitchen, living room and sun room. Beautifully decorated, the living room features a hide-a-bed couch, flagstone fireplace and TV, with satellite, TV, DVD, VCR and Bose. Directly connected is the large sunroom, with an open ceiling and panoramic windows to the gardens and ocean view. This bright room is an irresistible space to spend the morning with a cup of coffee or tea, wondering how this place makes time stand still.

The master bedroom is also bright with a wonderful king sized bed. A large sliding door opens on to a private deck that leads to the hot tub. The second bedroom is large with two double beds. The bathroom has a beautiful flagstone floor, shower and deep Japanese soaking tub with view out to the gardens. The best part of the bathroom however is the door that leads directly to the back deck and the outdoor shower, where you can look up at the redwoods while you shower.

The house is 1400 square feet, and sleeps 6 (8 with the hide-a-bed). We are the last house on a gravel road that leads up the Hill and are situated on about 3 acres which includes beautiful perennial gardens, redwood forest and a large sunny yard. We are bordered by several large 100+ acre parcels of forest. The location, about a mile up a gravel road from the coast/beach, means that we often sit above the morning coastal fog, enjoying sunshine while the coast is still shrouded.

A few minutes drive from the bottom of our road lies Cook’s Beach. We call it private beach but a few years ago the California Coastal Commission built a beautiful path and steps and we learned it had an official name. Now the access is easy to this beautiful cove with about 150 yards of sandy beach. North up the road a mile lies the beach at Fish Rock, a larger nice sandy beach. Here the Anchor Bay campground also provides a place to launch small boats for fisherman and abalone divers.

About The Owner

We are a family of 5 that loves to ski, bike , hike and run. We love art and nature and forests and gardens.

The Owner purchased this house in 2002

Why The Owner chose Gualala

This part of the coast is spectacular, with just the right mix of cullture vs solitude for us. They call this the Banana belt because of the warm temperatures often felt here. Often warmer and sunnier than the bay area. By sitting at the top of the Hill we avoid most coastal fog and enjoy warm temp's.

What makes this house unique

The property is unique because of its solitude at the end of the road, the space to play explore and hike, the beautiful redwoods and the Ocean view.

Honeymooning at the Hideaway

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at the Hideaway for our honeymoon and we had a joyful and relaxing time! We arrived after dark, which I do not recommend as it was a little tricky finding it without daylight. Once we arrived we found it was all worth well it. The garden is beautiful; we were able to see the last blooms of summer and the tree's begin to bear fall fruits. The sunroom is perfect for tea or morning coffee with a nice view of the garden. We didn't get a chance to soak in the soaking tub though, as the water just didn't seem to get warm enough--though we did enjoy the hot tub. The beaches are breathtaking and you are likely to be the only one on the beach. We enjoyed the town as well--There is a yummy coffee shop that makes it's own jams and the burritos at the Mexican restaurant are surprisingly tasty (coming from an SF girl, I know my burritos). The kitchen is well stocked from every utensil you need to spices and tea. Also there is an entire shed with wood which we found very useful for our evening fires. Cell service does not work there and the internet connection isn't great either--so the local video store was definitely worth a visit to fill our evenings. Overall, we had a blast and would definitely recommend this gem.

Absolute heaven, peaceful

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful and relaxing time in your house -- it was just what we all needed. Absolutely no complaints. The house is SO nice, the sunroom especially. Our teen girls hung out there most of the time writing, while I puttered around the spacious and tranquil garden and read books.

The location is so quiet and away from the rat-race, I am SO glad I chose your place and not something in Sea Ranch like I was contemplating. Absolute heaven. Thank you so much.

Beautiful scenery, but isolated

  • 4 of 5
This house is gualala was gorgeous, filled with amenities. However, it was very isolated. Although as the crow flies, it is just a few miles to town, the very steep road made it only a once a day occurrence. Our prius almost didn't it up the hill the first try. (dismantle your 7antilock brakes is our advice). the grounds themselves were very fun to explore, but due to the hills, hiking from the house was too difficult. (a family of runners and hikers here) beaches nearby were great and sometimes we were the only ones there.p
The owners were very kind and responsive.

Owner's Response: A good part of the Hideaway's charm is due to its privacy and quiet, because of our location at the end of a private road. We've never had anyone who reported trouble making it up the hill. Our family often hikes the mile down the road to the beach, and back, with no problems. We are 5 minutes away from downtown Gualala and its charming shops and restaurants.

Coastal Gem

  • 5 of 5
This is one of my favorite places to get away from it all. It's a very comfortable home with an incredible garden. Love sitting in the hot tub and watching the birds and deer. We had everything we needed including a fully stocked kitchen with a brand new stove. Bathtub was a treat too. There is something special about this place. We will be back.

Wonderful Spot near the Coast.

  • 5 of 5
We've stayed at this house twice in the past year, and I will not hesitate to return or recommend the venue to friends and family. Though there's no easy way to get to Gualala and the private road is a bit gnarly, but this house is a very welcome respite and well worth the journey. Very well appointed and spacious interior, with comfortable beds and windows to let in the sunlight. You can zipline, enjoy the hot tub, cook out, watch a DVD, crank up the Bose, hike down the cliffs to the beach, or head into town for a few excellent food options. Hoping to get my wife and kids out there this Fall!
