Harborside - My Favorite Villa on St. John
I have been vacationing on St. John for many years and am very familiar with the island. I always choose a spot on the east (Coral Bay) side of the island, as I come to relax, and Coral Bay offers all the amenities without the hustle, bustle, and noise of Cruz Bay. This is the first time I have vacationed at Harborside, and I must report that I am very pleased with it.
As the name implies, it is quite close to Coral Harbor, perhaps 200 yards beyond the front door though foliage blocks the view of the water. This gives a very different ambiance to the villa as one feels enclosed in a tropical paradise (after a NJ January). The attractive Caribbean style stonework of all the masonry also adds to this impression. One spends most of one's time in the "great room," an open combination kitchen (with island), dining room, and living room. This room is quite large and is surrounded on three sides by large, double doors as well as windows which open to the encircling screened deck. So if you keep all the doors open, you are surrounded by the lush vegetation while sitting yourself down at the dining room table. The walls of the great room are filled with interesting and attractive artistic objects which adds to the pleasant ambiance. Behind the great room is a large laundry room and bathroom as well.
The kitchen is very well equipped for gourmet cooking if you so desire, and the utensils and cookware are of uniform high quality. The appliances are large and of good quality. They all functioned perfectly and met my needs. The wifi was of adequate, if not startling, speed and was never down, and the cordless phone offers free calling to the mainland. The villa has four bedrooms, two small ones at the back ends of the deck and two larger ones upstairs, which are accessed from a spiral staircase. Upstairs has one large bathroom, including a bidet, and each bedroom on the ground floor has its own, smaller but quite adequate bathroom. The owners restrict the occupancy to four people, but if one has two teenage children who crave privacy, this can work out well, as each can have his own bedroom, while the parents can take the master bedroom upstair. The villa also comes with a large, meticulously kept swimming pool, though I prefer to do my swimming with the reef fishes on the north shore beaches.
In summary, particularly when one considers the price of rental, I gave Harborside Villa a top rating and will rent it again when I return on vacation.
