IMAGINE unwinding completely in a quiet and private country setting 10 minutes from the best snorkeling reef on the island.
You're tucked away, well off the road, by an easily accessed lane that brings you to your tropical sanctuary complete with lush gardens and sounds of nature.
The ohana offers ocean views and feelings of expansiveness. Spotlessly clean and supremely comfortable, including new furnishings, a king size bed, and everything you'll need to relax and enjoy. Wi-fi is included when you want to be connected!
The bamboo and redwood hot/cold outdoor shower area surrounded by lush tropical plants that provide privacy and beauty is a treat to experience after a day of play. (There is a hot/cold shower within the unit also)
The 2.4 acre farm is nestled at an 800 foot elevation on the lush and breezy slopes between Kealakekua Bay and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Park (City of Refuge)in the midst of the Kona coffee and farming belt. Our orchard includes 19 different varieties of fruit trees, as well as many unusual tropical plants and an organic vegetable garden. In true Hawaiian spirit, we love to share the fruits of the land as they are available.
We are located 30 minutes south of Kailua-Kona, through the mountain towns of Kainaliu, Kealakekua and Captain Cook in the up-country area of South Kona. A grocery store, favored by locals, is only 15 minutes up the hill. Restaurants, a natural food store and shopping are also close by.
They call it the BIG ISLAND for a reason! We are a couple of hours from Volcano National Park and a perfect base location for those who want to go exploring.

For over 30 years, I have felt deeply connected to the Hawaiian islands and Hawaiian culture and knew that South Kona was my true place. With a desire for a more sustainable lifestyle, I set about to relocate to the Big Island and find a farm where I could manifest my long held desires. I am an artist and farmer who enjoys swimming, yoga and listening to the incredible array of nature's sounds that abound on this property.
Stacey Himmel purchased this apartment in 2009
The swimming and snorkeling spots closest to the property are some of the best on the island. On special occasions, I have swum with the spinner dolphin pods that visit those places.
The on-site art studio combined with the Hawaiian plant and animal life inspire a sense of creativity, reflection and well-being. I enjoy sharing the beauty, spirit and my knowledge of this area with our visitors who inevitably leave more relaxed, enriched and wanting to return!
We were first timers using HomeAway, and if this experience is any indication, we will be back!
Stacey and Tony have created a very special retreat on their property. It feels private, secluded, clean, and bright. And they really did think of everything that a visitor might need! Day one we were packing a picnic, so I looked in the closet and there was a small picnic cooler. Perfect! We picked up a loaf of delicious Hawaiian sweet bread at a wonderful bakery that day, and when we returned, and there was a bread knife for slicing it up. Perfect! We decided to go snorkeling (very close by) the next day, and there was the snorkeling gear. Perfect! There were so many examples of our needs being met, that we made a game out of trying to find something we needed that wasn't provided... exquisitely comfortable bed, stacks of clean towels, laundry facilities, fresh fruit, a whole binder of sightseeing ideas... we lost that game! They thought of everything.
And finally, the outdoor shower is a dream. I can't do it justice with words, it is something that must be experienced. Surrounded by tropical plants, sunlight filtering through, warm water raining down, very private and yet outdoors... it is strange to say a shower was the highlight of a trip to Hawaii, but there you have it!
We loved our stay at Pukalani. Stacey and Tony are wonderful hosts, sharing fruit from their lovely orchard with us and showing up some of the tropical fruits trees on their ~2 acre property. We are so happy we found this rental!
Where do I start? My husband and I just returned home from our first visit to the Big Island and we couldn't have had a better time. I believe our stay in "our little Hawaiian guesthouse" was largely responsible for making this trip so wonderful. Our hosts Tony and Stacey were so warm and welcoming and very attentive without being the least bit intrusive. Their attention to detail in the ohana was remarkable...Super clean, lovely linens, plush towels (lots of them too), citrusy soaps, laundry detergent, snorkelling and beach equipment (all in great shape), a super well-stocked kitchen with spices and condiments, fresh fruit and veggies from the farm (which they kept replenishing by leaving a little cooler by the door for our arrival home after a long day of exploring), and the property...just beautiful...I miss it already! If I ever envisioned having a rental property of my own, this is what I'd strive for. The views were breathtaking and the drive to the property was equally gorgeous; such a nice area. Don't miss the farmer's market in town nearby. Lots of local artisans. Thanks again Tony and Stacey. We can't wait to return.
My husband and I really enjoyed our time at this rental. As mentioned in many reviews, the owners are extremely nice and so respectful of your privacy. They also have great suggestions for things to do and see even before you get there! - they answered all our questions and provided driving directions/links on several occations. It was also very interesting to walk in their orchard and see the actual trees of many tropical fruits. And, yes, we got the occasion to sample many of them!
The rental is very clean and contains all the essentials for cooking, beach time (including towels, snorkeling gear, cooler) and may more items (umbrella, etc).
The location is great to visit the West side of the island and especially great if you are interested in water activities such as snorkeling , kayaking as well as laying on a beach near by. We were amazed by the variety of fish to see in Kealakekua Bay, as well as seeing turtles and spinner dolphins! Most of these activities are possible within a 20 minute car ride. We also used the location as a base to go up Mauna Kea for the sunset and to book a tour to see the manta rays up close.
Thanks Stacey and Tony for your hospitality and kindness. It made our stay amazing!
This was our first time on the Kona Coast, and it will definitely not be our last. This farm and its surroundings in Kealakekua Bay are beautiful! It is only a five-minute drive from a variety of beaches and incredible snorkeling spots. Tony and Stacy were wonderful hosts; the accommodations were spotless, they provided an enormously useful book of places to go, maps, restaurants, sites to see etc., and, although we had our own gear, they had sets of fins and masks, and other sporting gear should we have needed it. In addition to our own living quarters (with dressing area and spacious kitchen) there was a lovely private outdoor shower with a bamboo and redwood enclosure, and a beautiful little breakfast nook outside the bedroom sliding glass door, where in the morning and late afternoon we ate the delicious fresh fruit from their garden that looks out under enormous old trees onto the ocean – providing a restful respite after an adventurous day of swimming and hiking. The photos can't capture how incredible this place is. Our only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer. The place is popular, so be sure to book early.
