This lovingly restored charming140 year old Japanese town house is located in the heart of Kyoto, near Gion, where geisha are frequently spotted. It is located in a quiet alleyway of Miyagawa-cho, historical Geisha district where over fifty of Tea houses (the place geisha entertain their clients) and Geisha quarters are lined up, you will definitely encounter Maiko/Geisha moving back and forth between tea houses.

The owner, Rico, lived in the U.S. for 13 years, 2 years in UK, half year in Spain. Knows English, some Spanish and Japanese!!! She will be on call for 24 hours in case of emergency or any help.
The house is located in an alleyway of 30 houses just behind a geisha district called Miyagawa-cho. This is very rare even in Kyoto.
The house is situated in the center of historic and major sightseeing area, yet you could enjoy a quite time at the house. You could walk to Kiyomizu temple and Kodaiji Temple area in the morning, and decided to come back for a rest, relaxing with a cup of green tea and Japanese sweets. Once you regain your energy again, you are ready to to go to the next adventure like going to Nishiki market (15 min walk).
Or, if you love art, you could visit Kyoto National Museum http://www.kyohaku.go.jp/eng/index_top.html and to Sanjusangendo.
The house is a traditional Japanese house in Kyoto called 'Machiya' and has kitchen, tatami mattress living room, tatami mattress receiption room, bath room, and toilet in 1st floor and two tatami bedrooms on the 2nd floor. The house is decoreated with Japanese anteques, yet still have modern comfort like air conditioning, heater, WIFI internet access, TV, microwave, toaster, tea kettle, washing machine, hair dryer, towels, extra thick feather futons, blend new deep bath tab for after long walk, and western style toilet.

Hi, after living over 10 years in the US and Europe, I decided to move back to Japan. I just love Kyoto and enjoying meeting people from all over the world. Hope I could assist you to have a wonderful time in Kyoto. I speak English, Spanish, and just started taking French lesson!
Location is very important when you have a limited time. You would not regret staying at my house because everything is nearby walking distance, fantastic restaurants, pharmacy, convenient stores, supermarkets, ATM and restaurant within 5 min walk.

In addition to the location, the house is 140 year old traditional Japanese town house. The smell of wood makes you calm and confortable.
The best benefit is the owner speaks native level English and could support you for any emergency matter. Knowing that someone could really help in case of emergency is a huge help when you are in a foreign land where you do not that language. The owner speak perfect Japanese and English.
This house was a fantastic traditional fully equiped comfortable base for our family of four in a magical part of Kyoto. The house is within walking distance to local metro trains, buses and some of Kyoto's most beautiful Temples/Shrines and we saw traditional Geisha all through the surrounding streets. Rico was the perfect host spending time with us at the house to explain how appliances worked, gave us some detailed maps and excellent suggestions for local sight seeing . She even came to the house late one night to help us with the wifi. We loved our time in Kyoto and would highly recommend this property
Following many friendly and helpful emails with Rico we rang her to guide us to her home on our arrival in Kyoto. A very traditional, cozy home right in the heart of the geisha district it certainly filled our requirements to the letter. The kitchen provided what we needed while the bed rooms were very comfortable with either western mattresses or futons on the floor. The beautiful traditional bathroom also lent atmosphere to our Kyoto experience. This is certainly the place to stay if you would like to immerse yourself in a truly Japanese way-of- life during your visit.
Rico is certainly a wonderfully helpful and thoughtful host. Dinner reservations and recommendations were made and nothing was too difficult.
Many thanks for a lovely stay.
Rico's property in Gion was the perfect place for us to stay for our brief visit to Kyoto. Rico was an amazing host, so very helpful. It was like meeting up with an old friend. I received lots of information prior to our stay about getting there and she greeted us when we arrived in the early evening. It was a surprise realising there were no windows and natural light downstairs in the home, but this was the only thing I noticed negative about the property if I had to choose something. Also be aware the ceilings are very low if you are a tall person (thankfully my family are quite short so it didn't matter to us) The house was warm inviting and traditional. The futon's on the tatami floors were very clean, comfortable and there was plenty of room upstairs. It was also great having our own fridge, and kitchen to use and of course a washing machine (with provided detergent) with the little area upstairs to hang our washing out was wonderful. The bathroom with separate toilet and hand basin area was very user friendly and clean. The shower was nice and hot too! We loved the streets and ally the home is on and enjoyed evening walks in the area to eat some delicious Japanese food - we also caught a sneak of some Geisha! Overall everything about Rico's accommodation was wonderful, I just wish I had have been able to stay longer and soak up more of the area and Kyoto.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The reason I chose this place, besides the great location and nice interior, was that Rico sounded like a very helpful, involved host from her reviews.
We were so pleased to see that her reputation is well-earned.
Rico's fluency in English made communication very easy. Her home is very nice, clean, with art and personal touches such as some fresh flowers and persimmons.
Rico gave us advice on activities, restaurants, and answered questions we had in general on customs and Japanese life. We are fairly independent but she made it clear, we can always call on her. Overall, she is just a very welcoming, generous, warm person who you sense is very happy to welcome guests and do whatever she can to make the visit enjoyable.
We have wonderful memories of Kyoto, you and your home. We hope to come back again someday! Thank you Rico! - Amy, Jonathan and family
Great location, clean, quiet, a taste of 'real' Japan - this place was perfect! The owner, Rico, made it all so easy to organise and was a wealth of information once we arrived. We will definitely stay here again the next time we're in Kyoto. Thanks, Rico!
We feel lucky to have stumbled upon this wonderful, traditionally designed and appointed, two-story house with modern comforts. The house is located on a quiet alley-way near all the local amenities (convenience stores, food markets, ramen shops, and even a Euro coffee café with a wonderful set breakfast). It is an easy 10 minute taxi ride from Kyoto Center and near several subway lines. A bike trail along the river is minutes away, and famous temples, a well-known geisha entertainment district, and superb dining options are all within easy walking distance.
While the handsome, recently remodeled tatami-floored house and its location were great as a base for exploring Kyoto, what made our visit near-magical was the hospitality of our host Rico, who served as cultural mentor and city-guide. Our stay coincided with the Obon Festival, Japan’s August family-oriented travel, visiting and celebration week. Rico recommended Arashiyama with its World Heritage Tenryu-ji Temple, famous tall bamboo groves and tradition of sending candle-lit lanterns down the river, as a place to view the mountain bonfires, a highlight of the festival. Her dining recommendations for classic, multicourse Japanese fare were spot-on and culinary highlights of our trip.
All-in-all, a highly recommended, handsome and comfortable place to enjoy Kyoto with superior service provided by a knowledgeable, friendly hostess in Rico.
