Ocracoke the Island : The Outer Banks of North Carolina (OBX), as you may already know, are a slender strand of barrier islands located between the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, and the Atlantic Ocean. Ocracoke Island is the southernmost of these Outer Banks islands and can be reached only by ferry, boat or small plane.
The entire island has an area of only 9.6 square miles and a year-round resident population of just about 800. Ocracoke’s historical isolation from the mainland, and even the other islands, is the gift that has made it such a unique destination.
Ocracoke Island - The #1 Beach: It came as a surprise to some that this 'sandbar' could be recognized as 'America’s Best Beach' by the infamous Dr. Stephen Letterman, or 'Dr. Beach.'
Ocracoke Island is completely, delightfully, unincorporated. There is not a single chain restaurant, hotel, or store to be found. There are no high-rise condos.
The 16 miles of beach is completely undeveloped U.S. National Seashore.
Ocracoke is about beauty, a quieter time and place and renewal – along with the best of modern conveniences.
Ocracoke Island - Stuff To Do: There are great restaurants serving fresh catch, plenty of outdoor activities (walking the beach, shelling biking, fishing, kayaking, para-sailing, yoga), a local coffee shop, bookstore, public library, shops, art galleries, surf shops/lessons, golf cart rentals, wedding services, or just a bench to watch and meet the locals. And to top off any day, there’s live music at Deepwater Theater & Music Hall.
Your pet is welcome.
