Fabulous Sanibel experience

Our stay at Jim and Elena’s home on Murex Lake on Sanibel was our best Florida vacation ever. The house is newly refurbished and we were the first renters. Because there were no previous VRBO reviews, I was a bit anxious about renting it. I need not have been concerned. The house was spotless and completely modernized. If anything, the pictures on the site do not convey how nice the house and location are. While the house is in a neighborhood, it seems very private. The location makes it a nature lover’s paradise. There are bird rookeries on the small islands in the lake, which is rife with ibis, egrets and herons, and you can watch the pair of nesting ospreys while lounging at the pool. Note that there are alligators in the lake. While they are smallish (the size that eats Yorkies rather than Saint Bernards), you should not let pets or small children play next to the lake. I paddled my kayak in the lake daily, but I would not recommend swimming in it. The beach is a pleasant walk away and just a couple of minutes by bicycle – which come with the house. I would highly recommend a day trip to Shark Valley in the Everglades (bike the 15 mile loop road). We also enjoyed a great dinner at Sweet Melissa's. In addition to taking in the charms of "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge, stop by visitor center at CROW - the island's wildlife rehab center.
