The property was purchased in 1979. In 2003 I donated the old cabin to CAL Fire for a training exercise. The Vista House is my new replacement home and was completed in early 2005. It sits on the old cabin site and has a spectacular view of the mountains, fields, pond and valley. I am please to share with my guests the abundant natural beauty of this unique setting where I live in harmony with the land, the animals and nature.

The Vista House is my second vacation rental at Rock Basin. The Windmill House (#40846 on vrbo site) was so well received by vacationers, I decided to open the Vista House to guests, too. Both homes provide clean, modern conveniences in a quiet, rural setting that is a short 20 minute commute to downtown San Luis Obispo.
The beautiful and peaceful Las Pilitas Valley affords visitors a chance to really get away from 'it'. Nature is as close as a step outside with deer, coyotes, bobcats, turkeys, hawks, herons and a multitude of birds of every variety in abundance. Our rosy sunsets and starry nights are spectacular! The area is very popular with bicyclists because of the mountainous terrain and quiet country roads. Wine lovers can take advantage of our complimentary tasting cards and tasting the fruit of the vines in Santa Margarita, SLO, Templeton or Paso Robles. Book your stay soon and experience for yourself why we have become so popular!
Sometimes in San Luis Obispo County you can sleep in a vineyard, or at least next to it. Such is the case at Rock Basin Vineyards & Guest Homes in Santa Margarita, located off a vista-rich country road along which you can buy fresh eggs. A delightful retreat, you get an entire house to yourself, but you can wander the property, visit with the animals or just sit by the pond and watch the meadow grass ripple in the wind.

This house design was our favorite we've ever vacationed in!! Very bright, cheery, comfortable, and Bernice made it complete! Well equipped kitchen, comfort in every room! Soft, perfect beds, ample bedding, well pulled together, private, quiet, great doors and lighting for working or relaxing around the property. No big steps to drag luggage around in or groceries. bedrooms are on opposite house ends, so didn't have to tiptoe around our son sleeping.. Great bathroom lighting and spacious! This house is bigger on interior than the photos even look! Bernice is Wikipedia informative! Just a delightful lady, who we've adopted as another sweet Grandma for our son. She answered all our endless questions about the region and gave us as much space as we wished, yet chatted when we invited her over. She made our Christmas extra special and supplied the tree, for our non-traditional, first time ever away from extended family for a holiday! I walked twice daily along the road that leads to the rental place, with ease. Just so quiet in the area and beautiful nature abounds. Always saw turkeys, hummingbirds, squirrels and deer around. Bernice tends this area with all her heart and that just flows through all this house and nice garage! Penny the dog supplied fun for us and our son also..along with Clancy, the neighbor dog.
B was great to work with and was very accommodating. The house was clean and had everything we needed PLUS a roasting pan for our Thanksgiving turkey and a special welcome gift in our fridge! It was super peaceful which made for great sleep. B's dog Penny was very friendly and watched out for us. I can picture having a big family reunion or other event there as she has many tables and space. Would be esp great for guests who are in the area for events at Cal Poly. The town of Santa Margarita is super cute and I wish we would've had time to see Santa Margarita lake- (next time!). oh Yes- heading down toward town we saw turkeys, deer and a fox. didn't see a bear though!
Recently stayed at the wonderful Vista house with 3 other gals. As we started to follow the navigation off the 101, we thought we were going the wrong way since it was bit of a further drive then we expect however once we finally got there, we were pleasantly surprised. The house is very clean and large with extra large restrooms (perfect for 4 girls)! The grounds are nice with lots of little walking areas. The owner's dog, Penny, is the cutest thing you'll ever see, she loves giving kisses and would greet us every morning!
The house is closer to Santa Margarita rather than San Luis, however Santa Margarita is a cute small (very small) town with 2/3 places to eat and couple taverns. We loved the Antique mall!
Santa Margarita Adventures is right in town and we did the Zip Line tour, WOW! That place is awesome, really great people and the best time you'll have! Wine tasting is right across the street, yum.
Also, right next to the Vista house is an old bridge from 1917, neat to see and walk down.
All-in-all, we had a great time and would definitely stay again at the Vista house!
Our ages 25-45.
Four great friends (2 from Louisiana and 2 from Oregon) met here for part of an annual get together and spent three wonderful days at this little hidden gem. We thoroughly enjoyed the house, the surroundings, Penny and Bea. Would definitely return and highly recommend. Be sure and dine at The Range in Santa Margarita!
A lovely home away from the crowds - perfect for peace, quiet, and relaxation... but also close enough to a lot of great activities! During our weekend here, we hiked at Santa Margarita lake, explored the tidepools at Montana de Oro, watched (and smelled) the elephant seals, sampled Brown Butter cookies, feasted on BBQ at the SLO farmers market, and tasted at a few wineries.
The home was spacious, clean, and well-kept. The two ducks in the pond and the numerous bunnies provided ample entertainment while drinking coffee in the mornings and winding down in the evenings. But Penny (Berenice's dog) stole the show - her daily visits were the highlight of my stay!
Thanks, Berenice, for your hospitality!
I highly recommend this peaceful retreat. It was great for bike riding and just
relaxing. My family enjoyed bonding time together. We appreciate nature but we also like the best of both worlds so yes, the best thing of all was that there was "wi-fi" too!
The owner Bernice was very friendly and welcoming she has an adorable dog named Penny. The sofa in the living room was very cozy, the beds were comfortable with extra pillows available, the kitchen was spotless and very organized. It was very well stocked with all of he basic needs we had enough paper towels, trash bags, dish soap, toilet paper. The appliances were very updated and of well known brands easy to use.The patio furniture was very practical an functional complete with a bar B Q grill for sunny days or night time star gazing.
Bernice was very informative and mostly because she was a great host, we were able to enjoy our stay. The highlight of our mini vacation was that we went horseback riding at Shangri La Ranch there we met Victoria and Robert who enjoy what they do they were very professional but very friendly. They took us on a trail of the beautiful scenery by offering horseback riding tours of Santa Margarita. We got to see behind the scenes picturesque landscapes, it was really worth it. Our family of 5 will be returning for another mini vacation for our home away from home for more beautiful adventures and precious memories.
