THE BEST SIDE OF THE LAKE.- El 'Alto Lucero' is a new house located exactly where you want to be, up high on the west side of Lake Zirahuen in a tiny and quiet community called Copandaro de Zirahuen. The highest and most panoramic view to the lake. Real peace and quiet are among our great assets in this lovely rural area, of course the view is unparalleled.
A beautiful pink paving stone and cobblestone road shaded by trees connects this slice of paradise in a 9 minute pleasant drive to Zirahuen town. Nevertheless, we have some small convenient stores 'tienditas' in the area.
Also on this side of the lake, 'La Troje de Ala', one of the best restaurants around the Lake with a pier and row boats for rent. 'Miralago' is another great restaurant where you can enjoy an international menu.
Also happily located a few yards away, at a walking distance is 'Agua Verde', an ecological center of recreation and fun surrounded by trees. You can take a boat, ride a bike, ride a horse, play 'gotcha' and fly over the lake suspended in the air (Zip Line). Great place to have lunch and drinks after enjoying a few hours of adventure. Note: The restaurants and ' Agua Verde', are open only during Weekends and Holidays.
All in all, 'El Alto Lucero', is the greatest place in the area! ...oh, and please, do not forget to visit our website. Look for the links that appear bellow on this page!

Hi, my name is Alejandra and my husband´s name is Enrique, we both are from Mexico City. We used to be in the advertising business but 10 years ago we decided to run away from all the noise and stress of the big city. First we lived in Patzcuaro and lately we had the greatest opportunity in our lives to move to Lake Zirahuen, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. We just finished building this new casita for rent which is near ours. We both speak English and are ready to welcome people interested in sharing this slice of paradise with us.
Alejandra Terroba purchased this cottage in 2011
Being lake Zirahuen one of the most beautiful lakes in Mexico, we decided to sell our house in Patzcuaro and relocate in this magnificent area: It is quiet, gorgeous, not polluted. The water is a show that constantly renews itself. Local people are friendly and we are near the greatest colonial cities that have all the amenities, activities and services that you can find in big cities. Patzcuaro, Morelia, Uruapan, Santa Clara del Cobre just to mention a few.
The greatest view to the lake, real peace and quiet, clean air, lots of trees. Among other things, you can exercise riding a bike around the lake or hiking on the beautiful trails that abound near by. By the way.... did we mention that we have the greatest view to the lake???
We wanted to spend time in Michoacan for Semana Santa and decided to try staying near beautiful Lake Zirahuen. The casa was perfect for us and we really enjoyed the indoor and outdoor spaces, as did our little dog. Ale and Enrique are caring and helpful hosts. We loved the well-stocked kitchen with lots of sunlight to greet us in the morning as we enjoyed our breakfast while gazing at the placid waters of the lake. The weather was perfect and our excursions to nearby towns were fun to photograph. We bought beautiful handcrafted pottery, wood and stone carvings, copper and Catrinas to add to our casa here in Mexico. A favorite destination nearby was Tzintzuntzan -- we loved this Pueblo Magico. Really enjoyed our time in the area and will make El Alto Lucero a regular getaway vacation home.
A VERY NICE PRIVATE 2 BEDROOM FULLY EQUIPPED UNIT. THE VIEWS OF LAKE ZIRAHUEN FROM THE LIVING ROOM AND PATIO ARE SUPERB. THE AREA IS EXTREMELY SAFE AND THE LOCALS ARE QUITE FRIENDLY.
WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO SEEKS A QUIET RETREAT STYLE HOLIDAY.
We came to Altero Luz for 10 days and had a wonderful time. The view is spectacular, the casita is cozy and comfortable, the fireplace at night was enchanting....everything was delightful. First of all Copandero de Zirahuen is a special place where cows walk the streets and roosters crow. Second, Alejandra and Enrique are very accommodating and helpful. Close enough to Patzcuaro and the craft villages for day trips. We live in Mexico and we will definitely return.
El Alto Lucero is a beautiful house with a stunning view over Lago Zirahuen. Eagles and hawks are living there. We had a great time there, exploring the nearby towns of Patzcuaro and Uruapan during the day and relaxing in total tranquility everytime we came back. Despite the warnings about travelling in the State of Michoacan, we had only good experiences with the locals and a very safe feel to the area. Its a magical place so dont miss it!!
Also the hosts are very interesting and friendly people. Hope to stay there again.
It is recommendable to bring a car.
A Gem, Not to be Missed: Just DO it!!
For our fellow American readers wondering about the safety of Michoacan, please rest assured: we drove our car through northern Michoacan and around Lake Zirahuen (and Lake Patzcuaro) and we had an incredible experience: it was idyllic, peaceful, and SAFE. The only dangers we encountered were the cattle crossing the road! Not once did we feel uncomfortable--it's like traveling the back roads of California or Vermont. If you let fear prevent you from exploring this area, you are missing the chance of a lifetime. All the people we talked to (Mexicans and ex-pats alike) say they live very peaceful lives here—no one had had any scary experiences—like the U.S., it’s something they only hear about via the news.
The cottage views from this lovely spot on Lake Zirahuen are breathtaking!! From the living/dining areas are large windows with sweeping views of this clear, turquoise (!) lake. A barbecue for grilling is just outside on the lawn, also affording the same wonderful views. The cottage is darling, filled with Michoacan crafts, and the kitchen has everything you need, including a washer/dryer. The hosts, Alejandra and Enrique, are very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. They live nearby and are available to answer any questions or concerns but they also are careful to respect your privacy.
Behind the cottage are beautiful woods for walking. Just down the road is a public area on the lake where you can rent kayaks/canoes, and a zip-line (popular with kids) that passes right over the water. Weekends are busy here—this is a very popular place for young families.
The beautiful drives alone are worth making the trip to this part of Michoacan: rolling green hills with lake views, citrus and avocado orchards, artisan villages. See why so many Mexicans call Michoacan the most beautiful state, and Lake Zirahuen, the most beautiful lake, in Mexico!
This was our second visit to El Alto Lucero. My husband and I stayed there last summer and finally found time to go back to what we consider paradise. This time we stayed longer so we could have time to soak up the exquisite lake vistas and tranquility, as well as explore other communities. The cottage is lovely, with all needed amenities. The area is stunningly beautiful and very interesting. We felt well taken care of by Ale and Enrique. We also felt totally comfortable and safe visiting surrounding communities like Uruapan, Paracho, Patzcuaro, and Santa Clara del Cobre whose artisans are exceptional.
