We were unsure about this property at first as the pictures on here were less than perfect. We decided to take a leap-of-faith based on the good reviews and I am so glad that we did. My parents live on the island and Pat was kind enough to take time out of her day to show my parents around before we paid her the full amount.
The owners are great. They allowed my mom to bring groceries over early and cook dinner there in the house before we arrived. Bob greeted them as Pat was away working and he continued to be helpful. The following day my son locked the bedroom door and Bob came right over to try to help the boys get back into the room. Wednesday is lawn/garbage/pool day. Bob was there working and I asked him if he could help figure out what was wrong with the TV in the master bedroom. He got the pieces to fix it right up. There was another issue I told him about and he fixed it that night.
One of the rooms downstairs now has a king sized bed, a nice TV set up, a desk and the day bed in that room. My boys slept in there. The other has a queen and they did have a pack-and-play, highchair, toys, exersaucer, and various baby/little kid things. That was helpful for our 6 mo old and our kids. The other room had a queen bed and a couch, a nice TV and a little desk my daughter used for her laptop. They were not huge, but not crowded. The master had a comfy king, a nice TV, seating, a private lanai (perfect view of the sunset on this lanai). Each room has a ceiling fan and a separate plug in fan, perfect for what the temps were. The screened in porch was by far our favorite room. The pictures show one of it with the old furniture and one with the new L shaped couch. It has the L couch currently and another matching couch (no day bed) however, our oldest slept in there every night as it was cool and we spent most of our time playing board games and hanging out in here. The living room has 3 couches and a nice big TV. There are 3 lanais upstairs, two out front facing the pool and ocean and one on the back facing the back. There are a couple of neighbors but you feel very secluded having a coffee farm next door and it's at the end of a street.
The kitchen has a new fridge and stove (both not pictured) and even though the oven is a bit sad, it did work. We cooked there every night. It was VERY well equipped, I just wish they had a pizza pan. Otherwise, they have blenders, food processor, pans, pots, dishes, etc.
Thank you, Bob and Pat! We loved it!
This house is absolutely beautiful!!! The grounds are well manicured but the nature of the land is not obscured. The kitchen was less then adequate. The old oven with the element hanging made baking a challenge. The bedrooms were not as pictured, had to re arrange to justify grand expectations. Enjoyed our stay, hope owner will update this beautiful property!
This home delivers and is exactly as shown in the pictures! Beautiful home with fantastic grounds and pool. Very large and comfortable for all. We had a large group of family (10 adults and 2 children) staying there and it was able to accomodate all effortlessly. Plenty of dishes, towels, bedding, etc. Enjoyed the porches and kitchen and especially the pool. Parking was a little challenging as we were always jockeying around but we had several rental cars and it worked out just fine. Location can't be beat as it is close enough to town and beaches but far enough to feel more laid back and secluded. Watch out for the neighborhood turkeys on the road though!
The only reasons we didn't give this 5 stars is that there was no crib even though it was advertised and that put us in a little pinch with the kids (should just be removed from website) and the response from the owner when contacted was at times somewhat delayed. There is not a greeting letter explaining how to check out and whether to clean linens, etc. We took this as just being extremely laid-back but it would be helpful to have more direction and information for guests.
Overall, the home and grounds are fantastic and it was a beautiful and serene place to stay. Highly recommended!
Recommend highly. The house was so inviting, clean, and had plenty of room. Loved sitting on the lanai, watching the birds, smelling the ginger flowers, and--- because of the higher elevation--enjoying the cool breezes (even when the town and beaches below were almost too warm), and listening to the soft melodic chimes located around the property. The sunsets were incredible. The yard had bananas, avocado, pineapple, passion fruit--all to pick and eat. Took walks in the neighborhood and saw wild turkeys and mongoose. It was a great house/location to return to after busy days touring Volcano National Park, snorkeling, night manta ray diving, horseback riding, or zip-lining... there were infinite numbers of activities and this was a central location. This was so much better than staying at a resort since we had plenty of room and could be in town in 5 minutes to eat or shop or snorkel/swim at the beaches nearby. Coffee farms were a 10-minute ride away as was a huge, shady playground. The house was very nicely decorated with a romantic Hawaiian feel and there were tons of dishes, pans, kitchen items, towels, bedding, beach boogie boards, etc. The photos of the rooms were totally accurate. Each room had a ceiling fan and standing fans in case it got a little warm, and with the breezes, it was more than enough to keep us cool. If we stayed near the beach or at a lower elevation, air conditioning would have definitely been needed. The pool was great for the kids but too cold for the adults to enjoy. There was a stone slide but not usable. There were outdoor grills but we didn't have time to use them. We'll be back!
The best thing about renting this property (and it is a beautiful property) was the wonderful support we received from the owner, Pat. The first problem we had on this vacation was trying to rent a car the week between Christmas and New Years. We could not find a car available to rent the first two days of our trip. Pat graciously offered to let us use their well-worn "beach car", and we gratefully to accepted. The day we were due to arrive, a snowstorm kept us from making our connection, and we missed our flight to Hawaii. We arrived 24 hrs. later than planned. Pat offered to let us stay an extra night at no extra charge to make up for the one we missed. We declined, but it was nice to have had the offer. The house itself was quite lovely. It was nicely decorated, clean, comfortable and well-equipped. The location is on a hill in a quiet residential neighborhood with a great view of the ocean. We felt like we were out of the "touristy" hotel area, but close to everything. My husband and daughter enjoyed swimming in the pool, which is not heated. They found it "refreshing", though I thought it was a little on the cool side. The grounds were amazing -- you could smell the flowers in the air, especially in the evening. My daughter enjoyed eating passion fruit off the tree by the gate for breakfast. The house was more room than we needed for our family of four, but we enjoyed having the space. Our teenagers each had their own bedroom and bath downstairs, (with a bedroom to spare), and we had the beautiful master suite upstairs. The extra bedroom actually came in handy after my husband caught a head cold -- I was happy to have the option to let him snore in isolation. I wish our vacation had been longer so that we could have had more time to relax in this "home away from home".
This is an amazing home!! The moment we pulled into the palm tree lined, gated residence, I knew I was on vacation! Walking into the home, it was way more than I had anticipated. The rooms were spacious and clean, the kitchen was large and well equipped, the living areas were very comfortable, and the whole house was decorated beautifully. There was a large group of family that came to the Big Island for a memorial, staying at different condos in the Kona area, but our home was THE gathering place for everyone to meet- and so spacious that no one ever felt cramped. The private pool was a big hit with the kids, and it was very comforting to know that they were always within eyesight.
This is a wonderful home for any family vacation! Our thanks to Pat for sharing her home with us!
The Palm House is in close proximity to beaches, golf and shopping but feels like it is away from it all. It is located in a small housing community with all six houses having half acre lots and swimming pools.
The property is fenced and gated and at an elevation that affords good views of the ocean and mountains. The gardens are spectacular with flowers of every kind; orchids, plumeria, hibiscus, ginger, and others. Pineapples, avocado, mango, and banana grow on the property. There is a large swimming pool with a sunning deck. The views are great, 180 degree view of the ocean. The property is reminiscent of an 'Old Hawaii plantation' with all the modern conveniences
