Nahiku Plantation's Stream Hideaway offers an affordable accommodation, without sacrificing comfort & conveniences.
A perfect home base for the budget conscious traveler who seeks to adventure around Maui’s East Side, while having a cozy hideaway to retreat back to instead of camping. (If you do want to camp, here is a link for Waianapanapa Cabins: http://hawaiistateparks.org/camping/maui.cfm)
The Stream Side Hideaway is a detached studio surrounded by lush tropical foliage and sits alongside a year-round fresh water stream. There's a small peek-a-boo ocean view. It’s cozy, clean & comfortable with an open beam ceiling, covered lanai, new décor, and all linens. The kitchen is fully equipped & there’s a gas grill right outside the sliding glass door. Light the tiki torches, fire up the grill, and just kick back. Enjoy losing track of time while at this little hideaway.
Located in our East Maui area are the Hana Commuter Airport, Waianapanapa State Park (black sand beach & fresh water cave), the Hana Cultural Center, Hana Bay (snorkeling, kayaking, etc), Hana Ball Park (with nearby red sand beach), restaurants, art gallery, spa, Hasegawa General Store, Hana Ranch Store, US Post Office, Bank of Hawaii, horseback riding stables & more. Beyond Hana town you’ll find the world renound Hamoa Beach, Oheo Gulch/Seven Sacred Pools & Haleakala National Park in Kipahulu.
Whether you’ll be out and about all day, or just want a place to getaway, we invite you to experience our little piece of paradise in beautiful Hana, Maui.
We stopped over on our way to Hana for our first night in Maui. We had been to Maui before but had never made our way over to see the sights of the Hana highway and visit the national park so we were excited to check this off our list!
The studio was a great place to lay our tired heads after a long flight! Bed was super comfortable and bathroom was clean and functional! We didn't get a chance to use the kitchen as we didn't grocery shop before we came but it was nice!
The jungle surrounding you is super lush and tropical! The peek-a-boo ocean view was a pleasant sight in the early morning. The sounds of the jungle at night were very evident. You may hate this or think it's super cool!
The directions were perfect but if you are trying to find it in the dark it might be easy to miss the signs!
I really recommend staying on this end (and at this studio) and beat the traffic to the seven sacred pools. We were the first ones there in the early morning and enjoyed having the waterfalls and pools to ourselves! Amazing!!
Overall, I expected more from the accomodation, and would not stay again.
- Remote location that allowed us to take our time experiencing Hana (would highly recommend staying over at least one night)
- Owner was a pleasure to work with and provided excellent directions
- Seeing a peacock in the yard was pretty neat!
- Large back patio with grill and space to relax
- Comfortable bed
- Strong odor of mold/must, even with the dehumidifier
- Spotted a cockroach on our last day (and noticed an entry in the guest book of other such occurrences)
- Ceiling fan didn't work, so the only option is to open windows (the back sliders could not be opened because the screen was broken)
- A number of cobwebs, and overall could use a thorough cleaning
We are not picky folks and, in fact, we are avid backcountry campers who love the outdoors and the elements, so we didn't expect this to be a luxury accomodation, but we did not feel like the accomodation was as expected. I did email the owner afterward to let her know about the issues, and she indicated that they would be looked into, so hopefully the conditions improve in the future. If all of the above issues are addressed, I think the place has the potential to be a great little spot.
The cottage is exactly like it is described here. Very comfortable bed and linens and fresh smelling towels. This may sound odd to comment on, but when you're in a very humid environment, linens and towels can smell icky if not freshly laundered. These were great! They even provided a cooler and frozen gel-blocks to keep your water and picnic meals cool as you explore the area. The lanai is very spacious with a beautiful view of the water in the distance. Fresh flowers on the lanai and inside were a particularly sweet touch. The only reason I didn't give it more Stars was because there was no bath soap provided (which I've always found in other VRBO homes). At night, the jungle comes alive with all the sounds, chirps, and rain showers. This also means those creepy crawlers like to come out on the kitchen counter too. Some were airborne so at night I had to deal with those while trying to sleep. In the morning don't be surprised by the handiwork of the spiders with their brilliant webs (inside too). Watch where you're walking on the lanai so you don't find yourself covered in the web! It's the nature of being in nature, so just know that going in and it'll be OK.
I always lik to stay a few days in Hana when I vacation in Maui. The little cottage we've stayed at in the past is no longer for rent, so I went looking and found this sweet little spot. It is a studio, so not a lot of room, but my mother and I were comfortable here for a two night stay. As others have commented, the bed was comfortable and that was nice. We had just spent seven nights in a lovely Kehei two bedroom condo that was wonderful except the beds. So despite the fact that I was sharing a king size bed with my sleep talking 76 year old mother, I slept better than I had the previous week.
The photos do a pretty good job of showing the inside of the cottage, but the lanai and view were much better than I expected from the photos. Really, if it's not fogged in, it's a nice view of the ocean.
The cottage is about five miles outside Hana, a little further out than I find ideal, but doable. It's also, I believe, in the rainiest part of the Hana side. We were there when the third hurricane/tropical storm was passing by and had two nights of pounding rain with a day of socked in weather. However, once we drove further into Hana the sun was out.
It is of course in a rain forest, and close to the ocean which means it's a beach cottage that has some typical wear and tear and lots of fun geckos on the windows at night! It was clean, with a lot of beautiful flowers (and some up reachable bananas) all around. You drive by one house as you head up the driveway and there is another one very close by, however since we were out exploring all day we never saw the folks.
Since you're staying so close to Hana be sure to do the two mile uphill hike at the Ohe'o Gulch hiking through the bamboo forest is magical. The food stand in Hana Bay was a great little spot for some yummy food, my mom swore the fish & chips were the best ever. Heading over to the red sand beach is pretty spectacular, what a great place to spend the afternoon. Parking near the field can be difficult to come by and I saw the police ticketing cars parked facing the wrong direction, so be thoughtful.
I love spending some relaxing time in Hana, and this little hideaway is a great spot for a home base.
We absolutely loved staying here! We were extremely impressed by how cute and clean the house was. It's even better in real life than it is in photos. Everything was new looking and comfortable. The bed is large, well made and felt like a luxury hotel bed. The entrance to the house is a true jungle experience. The front door peaks out from beautiful jungle plants. We were lucky to have nice weather while we were there, too, so we could really enjoy our time on the big lanai. The stream is right nearby and it's so quiet up there except for the sound of the water. The kitchen had all the utensils and cookware we needed to whip up two great dinners while we stayed there and the cottage even had a cable TV and Wi-Fi - which we did not expect and it was just lovely (especially with NFL playoffs going on). :)
There is a delicious honor stand at the bottom of the hill selling yummy banana bread, too! Our only visible neighbour was Kemo in the front house, and he was extremely friendly and welcoming.
I would absolutely go back here. We have no complaints at all! We spent the first 2 weeks of our Maui trip in Kehei, which is lovely, but this trip to Hana was absolutely the most memorable. Next time we come, we'll be spending a much longer time here!
You can't beat the price of this place either. I'm afraid to recommend it too highly, because someone else might book it when we want to go back! :) All in all, you will love this rental. Thank you for everything, Amanda! Hope to see you again soon!
After we really challenging drive to the place (we went into the wrong direction for over 20 miles on a dirt road at night… :( ), we finally found it and were soooo happy that it was so extremely nice and cozy! We loved the bed that was not just king size but also very very comfortable! The lanai is big and it was a good grill out there that we used for my birthday dinner. It was so relaxing to listen to the stream behind the house. And just around the corner there is this coconut ice-cream place that we had to stop at every time we passed by.
Overall most amazing experience!
Mahalo nui loa!! We will be back!
